View Full Version : DIY s13 chuki lip (gen4 Accord), side skirts (gen3 Legacy, gen2 Outback)

can't find a good thread to put these in, so i'm making one. deal with it.
90-91 ACCORD FRONT LIP. go to your local junkyard, find a 4th gen pre-facelift Accord ('90 and '91), and get the front lip. mine was $10. it's too wide and doesn't extend back far enough to directly fit the chuki bumper, BUT its overall "length" (or "perimeter" if you will) is dead perfect.
to do it yo'self: simply notch the accord lip's mounting surface to allow it to curve closer to the middle and straighten out towards the wheel well. with your chuki bumper off and upside down, carefully mock up the lip and drill a few holes thru the bumper/lip for zip ties. you'll be able to zip tie it corner to corner. it lines up so well, no one will realize it isn't stock.

a little dirty, but you get the idea.

98-03 LEGACY, 00-04 OUTBACK SIDE SKIRTS. go to a local junkyard and hope/pray they have such new cars. if they somehow do, get those skirts. mine were $30 for the pair. they f'kin rule for so many reasons.
1) they look cool. they have bulges similar in style to the s14 kouki sides, except they mainly bulge out, not down.
2) the front end-cap fits the rear s13 wheel well dead on.
3) that end-cap lines the skirt up PURRRRR-FECTLY with the s13's lower body line (same line the OEM skirts follow).
4) the underside "tray" part of the skirt gets just close enough to the pinch weld to use as a mounting point, but doesn't hit/interfere.
5) the front side can be trimmed to line up with everything there too.
6) because they follow the body line so perfectly, there is no interference with the door opening/closing.
7) $30 and an afternoon of careful cutting and drilling. seriously. you can't beat that.
to do it yo'self: test fit the Legacy skirts "backwards" so to speak; right side mounts on the left, left side on the right. the [now] rear end-cap butts up perfectly on the rear wheel well, and has a hole in place for mounting. mark that spot on your s13 wheel well lip and drill it for a zip tie. for the front, mark where the skirt reaches the wheel well and cut off that extra 8 or 10 inches of overhang with a dremel. drill a couple holes in the bottom side of the skirt (it'll be obvious where exactly) and mount it (w/ zip ties, duh, but seriously they work best) to the lower mud flap mounting hole and the two fender-to-pinch-weld holes. done.
i have no front end-caps cuz i'm lazy, but you could make some pretty easily with abs/plastic/whatever and some glue/sealer.

now i need rear valences. i'll probably just use some shortened mudflaps to continue being cheap.
in closing: $40 total, looks great, can't complain, suck it :fawk:

*EDIT* REAR VALENCES (TRIMMED/PAINTED MUDFLAPS) added. see page 3 for brief how-to. the pair was $10 at a local junkyard, bringing my ghetto aero package (lip, skirts, and valences) to a grand total of 50 bucks :fawk:

*EDIT* 90-91 ACCORD FRONT LIP ON SILVIA FRONT as copied from my post on page 4.
my housemate just got around to notching a '90-'91 accord front lip for his Silvia front end. came out super clean. the only main difference is the "perimeter" of the Silvia bumper/fenders is shorter than my Chuki by a few inches, so he had to trim off about 2" on each side where the lip would otherwise overhang into the wheel well.

*EDIT* NOW WITH MOAR PIGNOSE. fyi, these skirts flow super well with a pignose bumper/lip combo.

yeah, i mentioned that at the end of the post. i'll either be cheap and get some factory mudflaps (just the "valence" part, not the "flap" part), or i'll finally cough up money for something real, haha

they're specific to the s13. they fit the arch of the s13 perfectly and come right down to that main body line and stop. not many places carry them, here's one:

just put that hot road valance on your car thats on the one in the background haha
hell no. it's a G-Grow lip and it fits like complete ass. riveted on, bondo'd together, and still doesn't line up.
i'm pretty sure the accord rear lips are to boxy for the hatch's over the s14's but you might want to try that
they don't, i already tried. the guy here on Zilvia (silviaks2nr, post #5) that buys/recuts those lips to fit s14's lives right down the road from me. he's the same guy that i go junkyard hopping with, and who helped me pull off these legacy skirts, haha.

no problem, thanks!

Would love to see it with a perfect paint job.
Love the yellow letter goodyears.
gold paint pens at walmart in/near the crafts section, they work great for sidewall lettering.
are you able to go any lower in the rear or front or does the meaty tire rub horrible?
it rubs the driver side flare a bit... but thats cuz that flare is cracked/broken/ruined from a tire blowing out at a drift event.
i could lower it more (and kinda want to) but one of my rear coils is stuck at the moment and i've been too lazy to bust it loose lately.
Where do you get all those sexy shp rears from?
my housemates went through a LOT of trouble to find the Base and SHP rears for their cars... and then they decided to go 17" so i bought them all for cheap! i only had to go out of my way to buy 2 of those 12.

i'm probably gonna get some rear s13 mudflaps, cut/remove the "flap" part, and just paint the "valence" to give the skirts something to flow into. again, this is all on the dirty cheap. i'm not about to spring for nice shit when i can patiently wait for free mudflaps :naughty:

Bumping with my recent find. $30 at the local yard.
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/6071/contentmediaexternalimagd.jpg
Though one needed some bodywork. Just a mock up before trimming, currently primered and waiting on paint.
Only thing I'm having trouble understanding is how exactly it's attached at the front. I know you attached them along the pinch welds, but how would that make it sit flush along the body at the front?
Steinkrunk
05-12-2012, 09:08 PM
I was thinking the same thing, when I tried to attach them to my rockers it would pull the skirt away from the body up top. I just threw a couple screws in it since its just something to hold me over until I get type x or chuki sides

^^ hell yeah, guys! those are looking sweet!
Only thing I'm having trouble understanding is how exactly it's attached at the front. I know you attached them along the pinch welds, but how would that make it sit flush along the body at the front?
ahhh yes, i had this issue too, as my fenders don't mount even with my doors, causing the skirt to not mount flush with the fender at the front edge.
i figured out a clever way around it. i need to take a picture of it, but the gist is get a couple plastic self-adhesive wall hangers, paint them black, and stick one on the inside of each skirt. use a ziptie between the hanger and the factory mudflap mounting hole a few inches away to pull in that skirt flush with the fender.
it works awesome. you can't even tell it's there unless you REALLY look for it... at which point you would find a million other things wrong with my car anyhow, soooo IDGAF :bigok:

Could u post pics of where u ziptied it?
the front lip i mean
wherever i felt like drilling holes. for a few, i reused the original lip mounting holes to serve as ziptie holes. there is no right answer here; just center the lip and drill holes where the lip needs to be pulled/curved into place.

i made some rear "valences" the other day... aka carefully trimmed some factory mudflaps and painted them to match the body color. they really help fill in that naked rear wheel well area.
trimmed the flap with an air-powered cutoff wheel and smoothed/rounded the edges with a file. masked off the flap edge and sprayed the actual "valence" part. let dry, remove masking, and install. pretty easy stuff.

and as far as the "notching" i take it u meant just v cuts...srry dont wanna ruin this lip...its in pretty great condition and theyre fairly difficult to find
jaysgottaredtop
07-04-2012, 07:43 PM
yes, v-cuts, exactly. i had the bumper off, laying upside down in my bedroom. centered the lip and drilled holes thru the lip/bumper and attached with zip ties. then went down each side and v-cut it where it need to curve in more or straighten out more, drilling holes here and there for more attachment points. i think i have 9 or 11 zip ties across.

Why not leave the flaps on there and paint the valence part?
jaysgottaredtop
07-05-2012, 08:43 AM
^ i'm not quite understanding your question. that sounds like what i did...?
i painted the "valence" part because it lines up with the wheel well. the actual "flap" part rests on the inside edge of the wheel well, so if you painted any part of the flap it wouldn't flow correctly. there would've been a hunk of red in the wheel well, not lining up with anything. valence is body color, flap stays black.
i didn't leave the flaps because they look dumb IMO, so i trimmed them down really thin.

aftermarket? if it's similar to an OEM piece (i.e. that rubbery ABS plastic type stuff), then yeah, you might be able to modify it to fit. if it's a non-flexible piece (i.e. fiberglass, carbon fiber, etc), then no, there's no way in hell it'll look good.

just to keep in spirit with the thread, i fitted a 94-95 accord rear bumper lip to my hatch over the weekend. i think i might go back and snag a 96-97 rear lip and fit it as they extend further in the back. also thinkin about fitting up some 94-97 accord side skirts as they would go REALLY well with the chuki front lip and accord valances ;)

fitting these is NOT for the faint of heart, theres a lot of cutting involved along with making custom mounting brackets (i just used some thin tin molding and 3m permanent/exterior double sided tape) but the outter pieces fit the curve of the hatch bumper PERFECTLY!!!
i think i may install my 91-92 accord front lip i snagged this weekend as well ;)

my housemate just got around to notching a '90-'91 accord front lip for his Silvia front end. came out super clean.
the only main difference is the "perimeter" of the Silvia bumper/fenders is shorter than my Chuki by a few inches, so he had to trim off about 2" on each side where the lip would otherwise overhang into the wheel well.

thanks. and yeah, it's zilvia. most of these guys can go f:jerkit:k themselves, as far as i'm concerned.
starion wheels are pretty hard to find outright. the trick is to stalk craigslist for junk/inoperable starions and convince the owners to sell the wheels. just the rear wheels if possible. my collection of 12 rears = six SHPs and six base models are probably rotting somewhere on cinderblocks :Ownedd:

one major thing i wanted to add to the thread. i found that fitting the accord lip was kind of a pain in the ass around the sides, even if you cut notches in it. get yourself a heat gun and as youre bending it when screwing the lip in, heat the crap out of the plastic. this will help the lip conform A LOT better to the curve of the chuki bumper. the sides tend to buldge out a bit and the heat gun will help keep them uniform to the car.
i put the lip on BEFORE forming mine. after about 10-15 minutes of working with the heat gun after application, the lip conformed just fine after a little pushing and mending. it also helps after youve gotten it on the car to go back around the sides with the heat gun a few times, the lip will relax and reform its shape.
nissan240sexy
10-15-2012, 02:54 PM
so the heat gun does play a major part? I mean, its obvious that the heat would help form and mimic the shape of the chuki bumper, though it was not stated in the original posting. I honestly thought the notches and cuts wouldve been enough, but no, those darn corners are hard to bend (i did use a hair dryer), hahaha. so out of frustration, i cut the lip into 3 peices (long peice in the middle, and corners screwed to the bumper extensions) a tried to join them all together with and it was a total fail! hahahahaha.
nissan240sexy
10-15-2012, 03:11 PM
so basically, after ive made the proper notches and cuts, i'd have to align & mount the middle portion of the lip, then heat the sides and bend as im mounting the corners?
would you happen to have a picture of where you made the cuts?

hotlavaflow

Coupe and hatch use the same skirts. No difference.
Before someone tries to correct me on the difference between 180SX and Silvia and Canadian skirts let's just say the body in that area is the same Coupe, Hatch & Vert. So yes they will work. My brother has them on his coupe.

Holy crap! Awesome stuff! I just happen to own a 4th generation accord.. Lol.. If the 90-91 accord lip fits well.. You can also use the 92-93(but is thinner in size). A lot of 4th gen(cb7) guys install legend lips and 94-95 accord lips(both which I have) 95accord lips will have to be cut shortened
Ill probably go ahead and install the 90-91 lip but will test fit the legend lip and see how that looks

ok so I read all the pages, and my Q was not really answered.. will the Accord (and year)front lip fit onto the 89-90 pignose bumper? ... as that's the bumper im gona be running unless I fold and get a body kit.. but ide much rather use oem ish urethane bumpers vs body kit fiberglass...

Don't bother trying. Just get a pig lip. It's flexible, it fits perfectly, it looks awesome...
Not worth the time/effort to rig up an Accord lip to fit when you could just grab a pig lip from Craigslist or a junkyard.

yea right now, with no lip on my pignose and the car is basically lowered all the way ish.. with 225/45/18 with alignment.. all good so no funky camber.. its sitting about 7" in the front.. I feel that's way to high haha. Im just not Shure how much lower that pig lip/ explorer side skirts would make it vs just ordering a kit..

A kit won't help much more than a pig lip and skirts.
If you actually want to be low, you'll have to nut up and drop the entire car down. 18s with 225/45 truck tires probably aren't helping.

yea I know about the tires, I would like to find some starion rims as that alone would drop it.. I could probably drop it another inch or so.. how much about would you say that adding the front lip lowers it? if im at 7" now after the lip would it sit at like 6"?.. I appreciate the help. ill post a pic up tonight maybe it will help..

Inch maybe. Sounds about right.
Get shorter OD tires, tuck the fender harnesses, and drop the car way down.

I have about:
4" from ground to frame rails
2" from ground to headers
I should be able to drop the front maybe 1" max and the back a little more.. give it a sort of squat..

You should be able to go four more inches lower, frame rails on the ground.

yea im not gona fuck up my headers just to get lower haha not worth 900$ that's why I wanted to know how much lower the side skirts+ lip would make it look vs a full body kit
The car is sitting at factory spec alignment so I don't wear tires funny..
Ide much rather install overfenders front/rear but not Shure what size to buy.. the rims are (18x9.5 -4)(225/45/18) all around. I was thinking 20/30 or 30/50 for overfenders.. 10mm spacers up front to clear the Z32 calipers.

What size wheels are these? I'm looking for a setup like this but with more offset and overfenders.
