Your tires should be fine at 40-44psi. I have 205/40/17 and I keep the pressure at least at 40psi. Max rating is 44psi. My tires were actually underinflated at 33-34psi for a couple of months, and I noticed the spikes started to fade away with only 2,700 miles on them.
This might help if you're not sure what pressure to set your tires to. For stock wheel/tire setup:
Curb weight + plus daily driver divided by 100, plus 4 if the car is heavy
Example:
S13b FB SE curb weight = 2747lbs + daily driver = 150lbs
Divided by 100 = 28.97
Tire pressure = 28 or 29psi +4 if car is heavy
