View Full Version : Shatterred turbo wheel...engine ok?

So my rb25det s2 turbo took a dump with too much boost. Looks like it had the nylon compressor wheel (looks like hard plastic). Well My question is what are the chances that my engine is jacked up in any way? Once the turbo was blown, I did drive it back to my house about a mile away. All the pieces were IN the compressor side, so I'm not sure if any of the debris made it to the motor.

i would take off all the piping and see if any made it to your intercooler or past it, none of it should have made it past the intercooler since the fins would be to small to let much through but it doesnt hurt to look, i wouldnt worry to much about something getting into the if something small did get in it probably passed through or you more than likely would have had problems driving it home

Chancers are, anything that may have made it past the intercooler would be too small to cause any severe damage. But yeah, pull the hot pipe, clean it out, and blow the intercooler out from the cold side. Check the cold pipe for signs of debris. If you see nothing, your engine is probably fine, but it would hurt to pull the plugs and take a look.

holy crap, i never knew they used composite compressor wheels. i learn some thing new everyday.

Had a spike to about 1.5 bar.

it has pros and cons.
Cons : it shatters with more than 1bar of boost.
Major pro : it quite never damage the engine when it does.
OP> Check the compressor wheel, if it is not damaged chances are nothing damaged your engine. It is it ... It means something went in your engine, then out.

The first picture shows the compressor wheel...well, there is NO MORE wheel haha.

Sorry, i wanted to write turbine wheel. Dont know why i wrote compressor ...

Gotta love ceramic turbos.

Jeeeeez...I just thought the fins would just get shredded when they go bad, didnt think they'd literally grenade like that.

Not composite, its ceramic and RB 20s and 25s are notorious for shredding them. Don't ever turn your boost up on RB20s and 25s, but on 26s they used metal. The turbines cant handle anything more then around 10lbs. 7 is stock iirc.

Probably self destructs once a small crack forms and breaks off. Then it isn't balanced and all hell breaks loose.

Only the Australia Spec RBs used plastic compressor wheels.
Which is weird since you are in Okinawa.....

Only the Exhaust Turbines are ceramic. the J-spec turbos are metal intake and ceramic exhaust
RB20/25 turbos can handle no more than 13psi

How in the world can a plastic compressor wheel stand up to the heat?
Croustibat

it cant, hence the problem. As long as it does not heat too much (ie not a lot of boost), there is no problem.

How sure are you about this? B/C I was looking at another RB25 (not sure what series) and the compressor wheel was definately NOT plastic looking.

Wow that plastic composite looks so cheap... The NEO turbos use the same nylon?

Ill lost my shattered turbo wheel when i get home. Mine shattered on the exhaust side and melted into the actual housing. OP just like all the other guys said, just pull off your intercooler piping and check for pieces im sure nothing made it through the intercooler.

pretty sure, from all the RBs i worked on ive never seen a plastic Compressor wheel.
I was on the Aussie sites when i was researching info on the RB Turbos upgrades when i was doing my swap, and stumbled upon their OEM turbo issues.

nope metal intake, ceramic exhaust with a stronger Coating on the exhaust wheel

series 1 rb25's use a metal compressor wheel and series 2 motors have the plastic crap ones, but they all use ceramic exhaust wheels.

Ok guys UPDATE!
Looks like the Exhaust Housing Wheel is gone also. I'm hoping it's stuck in my exhaust piping...I do have a ECV and when all this happened, it didn't want to close so maybe there some foreign debri in there.
Still a good chance it never made it to the motor?

if you drove it after it happend and pieces got past the IC it probably would have grenaded the engine by then.
But like said i would pull the IC piping and check

yeah it most likely got stuck in the i/c considering it's kinda like a big net
unless it shattered into a bunch of small pieces, then i doubt it would fit into the valve opening

I'm trying to think of the route the blades would go when the exhaust side blew up...so I didnt go out the dump pipe and into the exhaust?

Dont worry about the exhaust side. they'll shoot out the exhaust

Ahh yes that's what I was thinking about.
Mine held up to about 20 psi but the engine went out, 4min at around 20psi and the ring lands blew out. Brand new HKS boost controller shorted out and held the waste gate shut. I didn't really notice until it was to late, didnt really notice much power gain as the efficiency of this turbo was exceed about 7psi before.
