No one as ever posted about this. So who many manly man or women live on their own?? Are you still able to mod you're car the way you want it??

I'll start first ; I live with my parents. So I'm still able to buy my car things. Yes I did pay for my car. I'm probably going to get this apartment when my parents go away to retire (in Dominican republic). At that time I'll need two room mates to share the rent. That ain't happing for another 5 to 2 years thought. The only bills I get is DSL car insurance and credit car.

So anyone else care to share about this?

guys I gotta tell ya if the situation at home is cool stay there. Trust me I moved out young cuz parents drove me nuts so I don't regret it but having your own place is alot of responsibility. Bills creep up on you or sometimes appear out of nowhere, roomates are horrible even if they are your best friends. So like I said if things at home are cool I would stay as long as possible.

Alright, so I don't own a 240SX to tell you the truth. However, I do own a 92 Integra. I worked for almost two years to pay for that car. It cost $4,800 at the time when I got it a few years ago. My parents helped paid $1,800 while I paid the rest of the $3,000, plus I paid for all the aftermarket parts except for the Tokico shocks ($250). Keep in mind, I used to have around 9k in my bank account at the time. Then after that, I was down to a mere $2,000. My parents pay for insurance and any "neccessary" repairs that needed to be done on my car since I use it to commute to school and work (when I DO have a job).

I'm not THAT spoiled really. I still obviously live with my parents. The only things they pay for is the food in the house, schoolbooks, some clothes (if it's on sale), my insurance, my cable modem, my phone bills, and that's it. Anything else is on my own. Sure that sounds like quite a lot that they pay, but everything else other than that is on me. Not until I lost my internship with a multimedia agency did I really appreciate every single cent I had. When those paychecks stopped coming, I didn't really realize how much money I blew on car stuff, going out, and bullshit things. I'm still currently trying to find work so I can get another car since I'm handing down the 'teg to my sister. Once I get working, I'm gonna bust my ass trying to pay for the next car and get what I "need" for my car. Just don't make the same mistakes as I do by getting something for the car just to look "cool". Believe me, a GReddy exhaust and an AEM intake cost me $700 total. I barely noticed the gain with the intake and the exhaust was just there to show-off when I rev up. Six to seven horsepower gains don't do jack shit for me. I could have gotten a set of rims and tires for my car so I wouldn't have to roll on ugly 14" stock Acura hubcaps, plus I could have gotten new springs to replace my old worn out Eibach Sportlines, which one of the previous owners cut a couple coils on. Now I feel stupid. I ain't gonna make the same mistakes on a 240SX.

I know when I move out and if I still can only get myself $10-$15 an hour jobs or even lower, there's no way in #### I can mod my car. Electric bills, furniture, cable TV bill, phone bill, various utility bills, credit card, food, appliances, and various expenses that'll pop up like buying towel paper, soap, and stuff.

Blah, sorry to give you guys my life story. It's just a random thought that occured to me while reading this thread.

When I moved out, a co-worker told me, "Ah, I remember the first time I moved out. ...I also remember the first time I moved back in." I was convinced I wouldn't let the same happen to me.

A year later I was asking people for big empty boxes. Because, yeah, living on your own is expensive. Barely enough money to maintain your car, let alone enough to mod it.

But, soon enough, I was back out on my own again, and this time with a considerably better job. I can now steadily afford car payments, food, etc, and still have some left for "toys". Everything I own would no doubt be even nicer if I still lived at home, but I definately get by alright.

And then, one morning, I'll watch television in bed with a girl who's been there since the night before, and whatever the cost of that freedom was, it just seems worth it.

I'm 21. I live with my parents I'll be 22 in march but i live in a 5 bedroom house, and i have my own bathroom and two bedrooms upstairs. i was living for free, but it comes at a price now as of the first friday of janaury, my dad is charging me $30 a week. i pay for my clothes, gas, and everything else. i paid for my computer too. but shit, i aint' movin out!

my best friend was 21. moved into a small two story house that one of his friend's parents let them live in for $75 a month. i was invited to move in, but i'm glad i didn't. they all got kicked out except my friend, because they had the cops over there every week, and 3 out of the 5 were weed smokers (nothing wrong with that, but with that many people someone's getting caught). one of the guys was a theif. my friend didn't want to pay everyone's rent anymore so he moved out and the other guys got kicked out, and will be arrested if they step on the property again. my cousin was 26 before he moved out but his parents bought a big house and they only had 3 people living there.

but ya. like wyldchyld said. unless things are hectic at your house, stay home. and if you move out, don't be like my friend, live with no more than 2 other room mates that you KNOW, and they have steady jobs.

I'm 18 and still living at home, but i'm an arts major, so it's ok.

Mom's covering my insurance so I can pay for college, she makes supper, and I usually get myself lunch etc. It drives me nuts sometimes, but there's no way I could afford to pay rent AND pay for college, so I don't have much of a choice.

I'm 19 and I live with my parents. Arts major also. I have a part-time job at a retail store but I'm not able to mod the car the way I'd like to, or at least not anytime soon. Can't afford to with my low wage. I'm really not that ambitious about it either. Right now I just want to change the I/H/E, improve the suspension with just shocks and springs and maybe a stb, and change the wheels/tires. Well the intake and exhaust are done. The rest might need about $3400 or so, I think. Assuming I keep the same job (I already got a raise and I know I won't be getting another) it'll probably take me well over a year to get the rest done. (I don't spend every cent I have on my car. ) Gotta get a higher paying job. ^_^;

I am 17, so I am living with parents, for the last year. Just got accepted to Stevens Institue of Technology with only $4k scholarship, but one year is $35k, so still have to see how much grants I will get, that's why my car is bone stock, because I am not taking a penny from parents for school, I would rather take loans. I worked at Burger King and Hess for 3 years, and working at Pep Boys now, paid 4000 for the car, parents paid $6500, I am just paying insurance and cable internet now. Just hope I get lots of finanical aids and grants, so at least I could put a little money in the car. ####, I wish there is a zilvia.net scholarship or something, is there one? j/k

Livin' at home with mommy and/or daddy. I do plan on moving out once I can afford the rent (I've already budgetted when I can move ). Typical bills, car I bought w/ my own savings, phone, cable modem, server equipment, insurance, and about half of my food. I pay for school, but my scholarship pretty much takes care of that (CIS Major). Trying to rebuild my mighty savings ($25.35 in the bank baybee!!). But, just got a promotion, and facing another promotion to full time tech, so I should be settin' pretty and mooovin' on uh up.

Looks like there are allot more people living at "Home" then I thought. So I guess I'm not the only free looter . Okay so I'm going to help out with the rent soon. Just to win points. I just got my GED. Why not a high school diploma (long story). Right now I have no idea on were to go or what to do next. I know I can do a SR swap in a year. (with all the gadgets). I don't mind spending almost all my cash on my car. You got to pay to play. But them is college I want in damnit. I'm thinking just take loans and I'll be all set. Bah, oh well no need to bore you with my stuff. Bottom line I'm living with my parents until I known exactly what I'm doing.

Well my car will hopefully have all the handling parts in my car on Monday. Then after that saying up for a SR.

I know this forum got about 800+ members. Come on out and speak on this.

I'm 21, living on my own, with two roommates. I've done a lot of shit for my age.. moved about 6 times since I first moved on my own.
I started getting more stable around 20 when I got my Computer job.. I'm a "Mr. Fix it" at a Mortg. company.

Sweet job, with sweet benefits. I'm buying my 2nd 240 in about 2 weeks. its a 92 SE 5-speed w/ 89k miles.
Already got about 2g's waiting to spend on aftermarket stuff.. (I'm getting giddy thinkin about it! )

I'm 26 (just turned) and I live with my parents for four and a half months every year from sept to february or so. The seven and a half I live all over the country depending on the year. I'll just say that my rents are cool and understand that I handle my responsabilities so it is easy living at home. It is awesome when it comes to saving money too(money just goes toward my car) I love it because I live cheap and get to see my fam. but I also have independence for the majority of the year. If you can handle your rents everyday.......stay there as long as you can. The real world will be in your face far to soon anyway!!

i am 26, been living on my own since 18, i moved to texas from california because of cheaper rent while i go to college. i basicly partied all over the west coast for 5 years and skipped going to school. now that i am a little older and wiser school seems like a priority to me. i just got a well paying job and am having lots of fun fixing up the car and my house. i would reccomend to all those going to school to stay at home as long as possible. it sucks having to figure out if you'd rather not have your phone diconnected or eat for a week.

My story:
21, I'll be 22 in a month (I feel old )
I moved out when I was 19 (softmore year of college), got a really crappy apartment with a couple of friends and a couple of girls I hardly knew. Some good memories, but I wouldn't go back for a whole lotta money. Dropped out of school (unfortunately leaving a nice scholarship behind) and moved into a nice but way out of my budget apartment with one of my old roomates (psycho girl who was not my girlfriend.) Ended up broke as can be (like skipping meals kinda broke), and about to kill my roomate. She moved out after 6 months, and one of my really good friends, and my older brother moved in with me. (crazy girl left, and my rent went down - what more can you ask). At this time (january '01) I was paying almost all my own bills. My parents covered my car insurance, on my 91 dodge they bought for me when I was 18 for $2700. I had no medical insurance (I like to live dangerously - no really, i was just broke.) which really sucks when you mess up your knee playing hockey. Or when you put your 91 daytona into a wall going 45 mph.
So my friend got me a very nice job a few months ago, and I got my 98 240. Consequently, I now have a car payment and i pay my own car insurance. I am now, (unfortunately) completely independant, meaning I now pay for every single thing myself.
I don't regret moving out when I did, but I now have alot of bills, and no savings. I'm not bad off, but I kinda wish I had waited a year of two more before moving out.
Alot of my friends still live at home, and they just don't understand how big of a responsibility living on your own is.
Enjoy living at home with the parents, cause its a whole new world when you move out.

I live with roomates off campus in a house with a garage. Two things:

1. The less roomates, the better.

2. Don't ever invite couple roomates to live with you. All guys, all girls, or a mix is fine. But when someone's dating another in the household, IT SUCKS.

All through highschool, and during the years following I worked with/on computers. I scored in October of '99 and got a help desk job paying 35k/yr. I was still going to school. Even though my parents said they wouldn't charge rent so long as I was working and schooling, they decided that since I made so much, it would be okay to charge me now. They wanted $400 a month - so I bailed at 19.

I got a roomate in a townhouse close to work and stopped going to school so that I could work better hours and just get away for a bit. During that first year out a lot of things happened to me. My 91 Acura Integra that had been EXTREMELY reliable started breaking down constantly. At one point I actually had $2.65 in checking and $4.78 in savings. Thankfully, I just had been promoted and received a hefty raise to get me through that bad spot. I also met a girl who totally swept me away.

When the lease ended at that apartment (Apr 2001), the new girl and I found an apartment together that was far nicer. One month later I bought my 98 s14 and last Fall started back to school. I'll be turning 21 in April, got a 4.0 GPA my first semester back in school (CSU Sacramento) and will likely purchase a house in the next few years.

At the end of the month I have a bit of money left over for toys. Lately I've been buying other things than car goodies, and honestly I spent A LOT for xmas.

I kind of got pushed out by the rents (who I still love and see all the time), but if you have the option to stay at home..stay. You'll save more money and have less scary moments. When it's time to move out, you'll know. I almost moved when I was 18 and realized I couldn't afford it, so I waited till I could. After putting in the time, and working so hard to build my life up to what it is now, I wouldn't go back to living with my parents because:
A) I won't accept that I failed.
B) The freedom is a feeling that can't be matched no matter what you do. I woke up one morning a few weeks ago and said to my girlfriend "let's go to Tahoe" and we did. We came back the next day after having a ton of fun. I could never have done that while living at home...

400 a month holy shit. my dad said the same thing, as long as you are working or in college, i won't charge you. i guess telling him my plans for my car, and seeing the money i've put into it over the years changed his mind. and i thought my 130 a month was bad. my friend who moved out, then moved back into his parents house, his dad said charging your son or daughter is encouraging them to leave.

my dad, in 1966 was 16 and had to pay $100 a month. that's when money was worth more. he also paid for a 66 mustang convertable (6 cyl), but he was out of school and worked full time. he then quit his job, sold his car (for another nice car) and went back to school. and now my dad wants to teach me a lesson about money, like i've never paid bills in my life. and it's all because of my grandpa and his evil ways. but he's nice now.

Want to know the biggest difference between living on your own vs. living with your parents?

I used to exist in a fantasy world of being able to afford cars I have no right driving.

Now, I live in a fantasy world in which I just hope Rebecca Romain-Stamos will come over ... and bring milk.

Well, they also offered me a deal of $200 a month but it entailed this:

I still had to do all of my regular housework, such as taking out their garbage, cleaning up the garage and such. I had to buy all of my own food, could not use their dishwasher, stove, oven or food. I also still had a curfew of midnight..so I was like..I don't think so. Peace!

what did you do wrong! can't use the dishwasher? doing the normal housework is understandable, but you can't use the stove to cook food YOU bought? cerfew! good choice on moving out. i've never had a cerfew to be honest. me and my friend would leave at 1am sometimes just to get out of the house and drive.

I am 19 and live my step mom and step sister on ft belvoir.I am an IST student and i pay for school unless i get another scholorship mom helps with school and i also pay my car payment.I have only moded my car with an audio system and an intake.I can't mod the way i want to cus i pay for school some and a $291.00 a month car payment.

My mom pays my insurence, food, clothes"when i ask".
I dont know but for the car i have i sure do have some high insurance rates the car i have is called a sports car and they charge that way with geico 300.00 a month if it was in my name.I have a 1997 240 with i belive about 8,000g left to pay it off. Then i will get the car in my name hopefully. So dose anyone else have their car in their parents namefor insurance reasons?

01-17-2002, 06:06 PM
i hate to keep replying but i'm bored...
i thought the 240SX wasn't supposed to be classified as a sports car. i had a parent email me one time and ask if they could possibly get a 240SX without twin turbo because the insurance was too high, around 300 a month. turns out the insurance company had it all wrong. i know you have a new car and all, and are paying full coverage but ####! what's with geico and their catchy commercials with the gecco lizard guy, i thought they were supposed to be promoting their service of finding the lowest insurance rates. but i guess that's what it costs for your car. i'm paying 51 a month for mine. liability though.

The car isn't considered a sports car it's considered a sports coupe, which by Insurance standards is lower. It's considered a high risk vehicle because of the FR layout. My gf works for progressive and could probably give me a better break down of why it is rated higher.

Anyway, it's also related to your age, marital status and gender. I'm 20, one ticket and I pay $220/mo for FULL coverage including 100/300 limits + rental car.

The best way to get good rates is to shop around. I looked at insurance companies for about three weeks before I bought my car, and for the 30 days following. Sometimes, if you have a jacked up record (like I did until recently when my wreck fell off) you can't get insured by a lot of places.

Check out www.my21stcenutry.com for kick ass rates. That's where I go.

I pay 250.00 a moth (under parents insurance) I would pay 300 if on my own. It's full coverage too.So far I have two parking tickets. One for parking close to the crosswalk and one for over the 2 hour limit parking. No biggie.

####, you guys are pups...LOL!! I am 29 and am stationed over here in Okinawa with the Marines while Sherry(my blue '90 Fastback) is with my mom in TN. Most of my living arrangments are paid for, cause I live in the barracks. I'll be getting out in August where I'll be living with my friend in Atlanta and Sherry will be going to Unstable Hybrids to get an SR20DET. I haven't lived with my parents since I was 19. Yes, wyldchyld, I agree having your own place is more responsiblily and bills will creep up on you outta nowhere but you do have more freedom to do whatever the #### you want. My mom is ok with it but my stepdad won't let me sleep in the same bed with a girl if she's staying over...FUCK THAT!!! I'll take my own place. Finding an SR20DET over here in Japan has proved harder than I thought, however CA18DETs are a dime a dozen. I wish there were more parts support for it in the States. My friend has a Sylvia with one in it and it's quite potent.

Happy birthday Mike!

Thanks guys. Today's the 17th and I just hit twenty-four. Feels good, been on my own for 5 years now since I was nineteen. My own car, apartment, shop, and 2 businesses to anchor me down.

I've taken on a lot of responsibility being self-employed, let alone having TWO businesses.. but its enjoyable (for me). It takes a lot of discipline, but I'm okay with it.

I spent a lot of money, but I really enjoy life. Now that I know how to enjoy it, I have to focus more on saving money for those rainy days. Its nice to be able to have forums like this where you can talk about cars AND other things, that arent so dull. Zilvia is a nice place.

:)

I am 22 years old and i live with my cousin. The only thing i dont pay for is my insurance which is only 860 for the whole year, and it is full coverage. I pay for everything myself, like school (that is so #### expensive), books, food, gas, matinence, cell phone, credit cards, bills bills bills and more bills and i even give my parents money. The funny things is i dont even work. i Havent worked for almost a year now. School is hard i must say, dont have time to work. Oh yeah, and i have a girlfriend, and we all know how much money that costs. Financial Aid is a wonderful thing.
I did work however since i was 15 untill i was 21, never was i not working for more than a month. When i was 16, i bought my first car, a 1988 mazda rx7 gle. i paid $3,500 for that car. A mechanic messed up my car, i sued him and got a couple grand. then bought my 95 240sx when i was 18. That got totaled in about a month, my cousin ran into me (behind) @ about 40 miles and hour. That hurt really bad. Then i bought another 95 240sx se. I have no money to spend on my car which sucks. I need to go to vegas a win some more money.
