we always chit chattin about our car shit, how about in your home/room...

i'll start,

in my cramped little dorm room i have a marantz digtal surround receiver, last years model, i have a yamaha 5 disc, an infinity centre channel (not hooked up) and up front i have a pair of paradigm titans, they are amazing...

paradigm is canadian made i believe, have you guys heard of them, they are real respectable around here anyways in the great white north...

i am planning to get rid of my yamaha carousel and get a nakamichi cd player, have a few options around here... recently i was thinking of upgrading my receiver, but im okay for now

what you guys got???/

i was never into it either until i started working at a pawn shop a few years back... there are so many ings out there, there are home speakers that cost like $250,000 for a pair, there are endless manufacturers of both speakers and components, way more so than car audio,

when i become a millionaire (which will definately happen) my home will be soooo F'ing stacked with the best electronics in the world i already have an idea for the set up...

every audio component will be macintosh, with mono amps between them and my wisdom audio towers in every corner and 2 subs suspended from the ceiling while i watch my 61" flat screen sony television (the only thing sony is REALLY good at). then i'll have black leather couches with a keyboard that swings up and i'll use the tv as my monitor for my computer.....

i really want some nak stuff, there is this place around my school that sells mostly new stuff... Nak, Denon, and some high end sony, i spoke with the guy at length and he knew his shit, been in the bus for years... used to carry bose, paradigm, infinty etc. but didnt like the way the companies were headed with production, now he carries B&W, and KEF, they are crazy speaks, they have a small room where he sells used things he has accumulated at great prices... NAD, yamaha, bose, it's different every time, i want to catch a nice recent nak 3-7 disc changer and put my yamaha on conginment at the shop i work at, sold my kicker ix252 for 70 canadian, the zeb has it for 97.99 US, but i still made a few bucks..

Zeph.. you recommend nak, any problems,

thats pretty good for a home theater system, but IMO, so-so for a music freak. :)

I have one pair of Klipsh KG5.2 floor-standing horn speakers, each with a 10" woofer and 12" bouncer. I also have a classic Dahlquist 12" sub, thing is the size of a file cabinet. :)

The 2 speakers and sub are powered by two classic Kenwoof solid-state amplifiers which look like cynder-block sized heat sinks - each amp produces ~200W RMS.

Everything is controlled by my classic Infinity pre-amp, clean, simple, and effective.

But that was 4 years ago. Since then I had to make some changes. I blew my Dahlquist 12" subwoofer (old-age).. and I had to get rid of one of my Kenwood amps, at 24 years of age.. some of my components were aging and in need of retirement. Remember, the amps, sub, and pre-amp were built in 1978!

So, I sold-out and went for something simpler and more modern. I kept my 10 year old Klipsch speakers since they still look and sound super-clean. Instead, I purchased a Sony AC3 Dolby Digital/DTS receiver with billions of super adjustable surround modes, sleep and more importantly, a fucking remote. My old Infinity pre-amp didnt have a remote!! :)

The Sony is a good receiver, handles the 2 Klipsch speakers just fine considering I cant bump anymore because I am in an apartment.. so I have to be more considerate. BUT, that doesnt mean I cant.. because I have a 15" amplified JBL THX-certified subwoofer the size of a coffee table. :) In the rear I am using a pair of Advent bookshelf speakers and in the center, a Harmon Kardon speaker.. fine for AC-3.

But thats really not what I enjoy. My favorite thing is having 0 CD's. My computer's 80gb HDD is littered with about 7,400+ high-quality mp3's which feed out into my Sony receiver. WinAmp plays the music and I have a special radio frequency remote to control the volume, playlist, FF, REW, etc.. without needing to aim the remote. Its all radio freq and pretty #### clean since its all digital.

I recently installed the 35gb worth of MP3's in my car too. I am using an upgraded PJB-100 to play all my MP3's which go directly out into my amp's which are already crossed over to the right freq's. No radio, no CD, no tape.. just an MP3 player with a backlit display.

There's nothing like the power of music..

On my desk is my sister's complete Denon system. 3cd changer, tape deck and amplifier, five speakers setup. My own system is just my Altec Lansings on my computer There' more important things I need to buy first, like maybe an upgrade on my 13" Syntech TV

I used to be into home theater, but now I have consolidated into a really nice stereo setup.

Paradigm mini monitors for speakers which for the price, absolutely rule. So much sound for a 6.5" woofer in a modest enclosure with really nice build quaility.

Yamaha AX-592 100Wx2 integrated amplifier.

Some onkyo 6 disc changer (no idea of model number).

I really love this setup, since it is exactly what I'm looking for. No gimmicky sound fields or 7 other channels I'll never use. On a decent buget I love it. Plus with the speakers on stands, they are easy to move (compared to towers or a huge sub).

Now the guy I bought my 240 from has a stacked system. Something like $20k speakers and a $25k amp. The speakers still need to be upgraded as they are about 80% of what he's looking for, but the amp is the best. Well my setup was $1k and I'm not complaining.

No highs, No lows...Must be bose. Don't believe the hype.

old s13, you have same taste as me. nothing sounds better in my opion than klipsch. i have the rf3's for the front channel and am starting to piece together the surround. if you guys want a real high end receiver for a good price check out outlaw audio. that stuff is the real deal.

seen soem pretty crazy onkyp shit around, and even seen some harmon Kardon car amps.... sold it for 75 canadian at work, did you know that jaguars have a hramon kardon amplifier bolted into an amp rack beside teh changer... i'd like to find a yard with soem beat jags, and heist the amps... they're sweet

I've got just a small system in my apartment:
Yamaha receiver,
Kenwood DVD,
Sony 5 disc CD,
Pair Cerwin Vega towers with 12" Subs,
Pair Sony surround speakers,
12" Cerwin Vega powered sub.

Not too bad, it shakes the whole place pretty well. Great for parties.

Oh yeah and a 52" widescreen t.v.

zephyr> yeah just by the setup, its pretty cool and easy to tell what type of listening that person prefers! nice setup though, must be very enjoyable to listen to. interesting web page too dude..

rabbit23> I purchased the klipsch as an experiment many years ago from my friend's dad.. at $400 for the pair it was a good price, considering they retailed for $1000/ea. Personally, I dont think they are worth the money. I like Klipsch and yeah, I would continue to purchase their products.. but when it comes down to FULL preference, I am an infinity kinda guy.

My next *pair* of speakers will definately be a good set of Martin Logan's or some pretty heavy duty Infinity's. I've always wanted electrostatic speakers, but i'll have to do some serious listening with them to ensure they are the right type of speaker I want.

The Klipsch are good, but I am surprised that the 10" woofers cannot handle too much bass. I can understand that though, they are more "jazz" speakers. The highs are clean but those #### horns are a bit too aggressive for my taste. I'll think ANY infinity speaker that uses those EMIT flat-planar ribbon tweeters are the BOMB. I have EMITs in my car, nothing like them in the WORLD. I've heard so many tweeters.. but EMITs just rock.

true the horns can be a little much but there is a knob on the receiver for that i haven't had the problem with the bass though. although i also have a 12 klipsch powered sub box for the surround sound. just go and listen to the rf3's. you will not be dissapointed. they are expensive but in the world of audio you get what you pay for. i bought mine off of ebay for 750 for the pair (brand new) you can probably get them cheaper now though. i know they make better speakers than klipsch that is just my opinion and taste. (i like to feel the lasers in starwars, and the race scene in f&f makes my whole house rummble like your inside the car!)

Cerwin-Vega, Polk, and Infinity are my brands ... you want 1 sub ... and 5 or 6 100w speakers depending if you are doing a 5.1 or 6.1 setup. First step is to find a nice reciever ... as for the speakers ...

The SUBWOOFER (You only need 1, bass is not directional)
Power Handling ... 200w atleast
Sensitivity: 90dB+ ... 90 is the absolute minimum
Frequency Responce ... 20Hz as the low end range would be a good target

The Satalite Speakers ...
Power Handling: 100w each! not for a pair, but 100w Each. If you want even sound around you try to get all of the exact same speakers, most good ones will have 2 speakers in them, one mid-range, and a tweeter.
Sensitivity: 90dB+ ... 90 is the absolute minimum
Frequency Responce: The Low isn't as important, I have some infinitys that are 77 - 20000Hz and sount great, it may be a good target.
