View Full Version : What diff do we have?

Rear off the ground in N, both wheels spin the same way, put in gear, one turns one way, one turns the other. (VLSD?)

Ratio looks to be something near 3.2 to 1. No where near the 4 to 1 of the J30 or 240. (Previous owner said it was J30)

Has six hole axle, no ABS ring. About 11 inches long excluding rear cover. Nearest I can figure is a Pathfinder diff??

Axle seal leaks, and it whines LOUD. This is a DD car, so we'd like to get the right parts before removing it and rebuilding it. Thanks in advance.

To me it sounds like you got a welded diff bud.

Do the tires chatter in parking lots... if so, you may indeed have a welded diff..

To me, it doesn't look any different than a standard r200 diff...

that means its an open diff, so really it doesnt matter what type of diff it is, since its an open diff you might as well just upgrade.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Looks like everyone agrees. I'd been researching these diffs, and found so much contradictory info, so I posted here.

I guess my son and I are in the market for a J30- 95-96 diff? I'm not funding a Kaaz setup or anything. :)

Thanks again. DaveAZ

i had vlsd in my car before and after a track event i noticed it started whining. and when i went home from the track it got louder and louder to a point it hurt my brain to continue driving so i had to call a tow truck and haul it the rest of the way home. i think they said one of the bearings went bad or something. just ended up taking it out and putting a 2way cusco.

Well as long as it's not welded it will be fine to daily drive on, I mean even if it is you can still drive on it just eats the hell out of your tires and is real fun in the rain! But they are fine mine has been welded for the last 3 years.

I was hoping for some explanation why it's geared so much higher than a stock 240. It's just a tad over 3:1.

Pop the cover off and take a peek at the stamp on the ring gear. That'll tell you exactly what the ratio is, and where it's from.

Yep. Was trying to avoid that without having the parts, or a new diff to put in. (Daily Driver)

Once we drop it and open, I'll post what I find.

I said I'd post what I found. Here it is. Looks like a VLSD to me. The case was definately S13- small front mount holes, and shorter length. It's thrashed, but the J30 we just put in, (internals identical) is way quiter, and though it's .5 inches longer with the ABS ring, the drive line fit fine.

You have a picture of your new diff?

No, but it is exactly like the other J30 VLSD you see photos off. Has the ABS ring, the larger front mounting holes, and the six-hole axles., noticably higher gearing.

Very unlike the one we pulled, which you never see photos of, or even hear about....or at least I hadn't. It was very much looking like stock S13. But it was definitely VLSD and the previous owner pulled it himself. Gearing was lower as well.

Whats the possibility it was an r32 diff or something? Im unsure if they are the same or not but they are both r200..
