after installing a j30 (abs) vlsd in to my s14 it sounds like a rubbing tire, or a propeller hitting something, but the sound is coming from the transmission area.

I'm guessing that it is because the driveshaft is too long (I have non-abs shaft). any inputs?

many people do the swap with no problems, without changing out the driveshaft, so I'm wondering if it could be something else. but if it is the driveshaft being too long, is there anything I can do other than replacing the driveshaft?

if it is the driveshaft being too long, have other people had the same issue (same sound).

I did drain and fill the VLSD with 75/90 mobile1 (about 1.5qt)

Try knocking off the dust cover off the end of the trans. Black thing that protrudes off the end of the trans tail. If that's already gone, is the driveshaft tight in the trans (end of the slip yoke butted up againt the trans)?

Pics of the undetermined side of the car where the driveshaft meets trans would be a big help.

i'll try and get it up on jacks later so I can take a pic. If I unbolt the DS from the rear, slide it out of the tranny... can i just "bang" out the cover?

yes use a screwdriver and a hammer and it should come off very easily

i added photos. what about the red "grease" on the cover? I only drove maybe 3 miles with the car that way.

Looks like the driveshaft is too long.

by looking at those pics, you think that even after removing the dust cover there will still be an issue?

try removing the dust cover and see if it still makes the noise. if it still makes the noise then you're gonna need a new driveshaft
