View Full Version : s14 Fuel gauge not working
My fuel gauge is reading empty. Tank is 3/4 full. Gauge was working properly, now it is reading way under empty.
I am pretty sure I did something to cause this when replacing fuel pump sock.
I looked again sending unit is on correctly. Triple checked that. Fuel pump is also in the correct spot. Triple checked that. All wiring is plugged in correctly.
I tried looking at the FSM to see if it has a relay or fuse. Couldn't figure out anything (not good a reading those wiring diagrams).
Anyone have suggestions?
Tried searching.

he man I ended up opening my tank and had none when i just bought my car. I installed a sender from a s15 in a s14 in the end. What could help you is maybe take it out, open that sender up and cleaning it with contact cleaner.
might not look dirty but when you start cleaning you;ll see that the float will move up and down smootly it might be stuck. But now your saying its on empty ? triple check wires man

Make your your float isn't hung up on something or caught?

Try checking the fuses in your lower left hand fuse box (near your left foot when you are driving). I'd also check that all your wires in/out of the fuel tank are making a good connection. It is something simple.
I had an issue on my S14 where the plug for the fuel pump into the top of the tank would make an intermittent connection. It was a simple fix but took some time to diagnose.
I checked all fuses. Not sure if a relay has to do with anything in the tank.
Going to re-check wiring.

ever figure this out? got the same issue...
Ended up being the plug on the gas tank. It wasnt seating correctly. I just pushed it down with some force and shoved a paper clip it so it wouldnt slide back out.

Bumping a dead thread here....
I just recently replaced the O ring under the big plastic turn cap because it was old and let gas fumes into the car.. Anyways..
After I reassembled everything, my gas gauge doesn't work. Everything is hooked back up correctly, all of the plugs are hooked up as they should be, but the gas gauge reads well under E, like it's just slack.
I'm going to get back in there to look at the float and the pump.... but my question is: What am I looking for?
Will the float just be sitting freely in the tank somewhere? Is this the only measure for reading fuel level? Is there another unit in the tank that has something to do with fuel level?
Just trying to figure out where to look, thanks.

Instead of makin' a new thread I' m going to bump this since my fuel gauge needle is way below E.
I see that someone solved this because they had a intermittent connection and another was because the plug wasn't connected properly.
What's the safest way to test the connection to the tank?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

mine currently is wayyy under E and the gas lights on. same scenario wire colors matched as I had a 3 pin plug before my gas tank swap. i emptied the old gas in the tank I picked up so possibly i knocked the sender loose investigating when i wake up.

I drained my tank completely and mine is now way under E. I need to investigate, but it's not high in my priority list ATM. Once I look into it I'll report back.

So I'm swapping out my fuel pump. The fuel sending unit is the orange/brown looking thing right? Where is it suppose to be? Mine is mounted closest to the passenger side but it seems like it is barely hooked onto what it is mounted to. It wiggles around quite a bit; is it suppose to be like that?
I hate not having a fuel gauge. Let me know guys. Thanks!

I just did a fuel tank swap. The sending unit is just right of the fuel pump, if standing behind it. It slides horizontal to left to remove. It does wiggle around in its location. I would recommend you remove it and clean the contacts. Make sure it moves freely. Hope that helps.

Damn my car has been down for awhile.
I definitely have a intermittent problem with my fuel gauge. The needle usually sits at or below E while the car is off but the needle would steadily rise to half or 3/4 when I have the car on and driving. Could my fuel sending unit be stuck somehow? Any way to clean this thing?
