Hey, I just jacked my S14 up, and spun the passenger rear wheel forwards and the drivers side rear wheel spun the same way, VLSD, or no?

1. make sure can was in neutral
2. is there a sticker/marking on the diff side?
3. apply a bit of pressure to the opposite wheel and see if there is any resistance turning the wheels

that should verify it further.

most likely you should NOT have a VLSD
but nissan is hella goofy and if it was an option or the orginal owner put it on or owner before you put it on, its all possible. nissan did some weird stuff!

no, you want the car in gear, not neutral.. Open diff could spin in same direction if the driveshaft is allowed to turn.

in gear? no way! a vlsd will spin same direction when in nuetral unelss there is something holding the wheel.
how do you turn the wheel with the car in gear when its turned off? the wheel wont turn. that's why you leave a car in gear when on a steep hill (with wheels curbed) so the wheels wont roll...right??

a open diff will spin backwards no matter what
i've tested it on um...4 or 5 cars and various open diffs on the ground
it always spins opposite!

I'm saying it COULD spin the same direction if the car was in nuetral. With the car in gear you are testing ONLY the spider gears inside the differential. With the car in neutral you COULD be spinning the diff unit, and ring gear, and in turn, spin the drive shaft.

If the rear wheels are off the ground, and the car is in gear, if you spin one tire, and the other spins in the other direction you MUST have either open differential, or helical differential. If it doesn't spin, then you must have vlsd, or clutch lsd.

Its weird because i bought the car about a year ago cheap cause it had a huge dent in it, and I bought it with intentions to modify it slowy, (which ive been doing) ... ive only driven it a few times, but never EVER pushed it

right now it sitting in my garage waiting for the five lug swap that i have and the z32 wheels, then its getting painted ...

anyhow, my insurance card says this : 95 Nissan/240SX/SE
there was an SE badge on it, but since it has four lug i figured it was just a mistake. wtf?

When i had the car jacked up, It WAS in neutral and both tires spun the same way.

The differential is MAD dirty so perhaps the orange sticker (if there is one) is under all the grime and dirt (its REALLY dirty).

Dousan: if i apply pressure to the one tire and try to spin the other, and there IS resistance what does this conclude? VLSD or No VLSD ? Im assuming VLSD.

Any how, thanks for all the replies guys

yeah
if you apply some pressure (like have a friend hold the other wheel while you turn yours) it will be some resistance on your side and harder to turn your wheel

i know this becuase when friends companies get a shipment im 'lsd nerd' and test to see if VLSD or 2 way and if its true LSD, ill open it and check the final gear

hehe..ive played with so many LSDs, if they were 15 year old girls, id be serving a life sentence .hahahahahahaa

ok, same deal again today, car in neutral both tires spin , car in gear, tires sping opposite directions, open diff i guess right?
