Hey,

So I have key lug nuts for my wheels on my 240sx. And while trying to take on off the driver rear tire the lug nut just snapped off. Leaving the base still on the stud. The whole in the wheel is too small to get any tools around the lug nut. and the base of the nut fills the whole to the point that I cant even pound a smaller socket onto it.

So I have not be able to grab onto it with any type of tool.
Havnt been able to get a smaller socket on there.
Pounding like hell on it hasnt done anything.

So right now i am trying to drill wholes into the lug nut itself. Multiple wholes hoping it will eventually break into pieces. But it doesnt seem to be working very well.

The last Idea i have, and the one I really really really do not even want to attempt is to drill into the stud. Its a hardened bolt and I know it will be a bitch to get ground down enough to the point to get the nut out.

Any other ideas or suggestions anyone can give me?

I have some pictures.

Thanks in advanced

You're hole drilling seems to be working.

I would have placed a 12pt socket over it, hammered the hell out of it, and then removed it.

Tire shops have a tool to remove wheel locks, it is a socket shaped tool that has "teeth" inside it. That might work depending on how much lug is still showing. My last resort would be to grind down the back side of the stud behind the hub and punch it out that way.

Go to a shop that will weld a piece of scrap to the tip of the lug and have them weld a socket to it so you can wrench it off. Hope that makes sense.

Just kick the wheel from inside and break of the stud. Brand new stud is like $3 and takes 10 minutes to replace.

The base of the key lug nut is too broad and fills the whole too much to get a socket on there..

Thanks.

Tried that. They couldnt get it on the lug nut. wasnt enough room between the wheel and the nut to fit anything in there..
as to the back of the stud grinding. Im thinking I may have to go to that.

I guess I can try that. I dont see how they would have enough room to tack weld something onto it..

the other 4 studs in place make it close to impossible for this. I have tried taking off the other 3 nuts and banging away at the wheel with a mallet. still wont break loose..

It works all the time, done 100's at work.
Usually customers loose their lock, so I get the other 3 or 4 off and kick the tire from inside. It breaks the lug off every single time, no matter what car.
If your using a mallet, it won't do shit. Think, your leg is like 10 mallets. Go find a big guy and pay him to kick it off if you don't know how to use the force.

or you can just remove entire hub cut the stud from behind

The way we do it (which keeps wheels from damage) is to literally remove the hub from the vehicle, and then torch/cut/remove the back of the lug stud. Then take a punch and punch it out. Sure it's maintenance intenstive, but cheaper then buying a wheel.

Drill on the stud, then take BFH to it. Then drill some more and whack it again. Eventually it will be weak enough to rip the remaining threads out of the broken lug. Oh, and yes, the stud is hardened but you need to realize that the hardness is only a surface thing, once you break the surface and continue drilling, you should be fine. (I work in the heat treating industry). Get a new stud and you are good to go. Also, buy better lug nuts next time, none of that Pep Boys crap.

Clifnotes: (BFH = BIG F*ING HAMMER, ie 32 oz. Ball peen/small sledge etc..)
