Ok I picked up a 89 hatch for a steal and I figured the timing was off. Me and my cousin worked all night trying to figure it out. Its a sohc did the whole nine. The previous owner said he just removed the heads: got the flywheel resurfaced, new water pump, new clutch, resurfaced heads, new clutch master cylinder. (don't know nothing about single cams)

so the trouble shooting started off with:
check the fuel pump - check
check to see if there was spark - check(small white spark but still spark)
pulled the spark pulls and dried them - check
alligned the camshaft to 3 o'clock exact
aligned the crank to exactly at the second (red) marker
tried spray some carb cleaner in the intake

And no luck. From what was told and from what my research said. was that pistons 1 & 3 should be up (top dead center) if the cam was at 3 and the crank was exactly at the 2nd line. But the piston set up was more like 1 & 3 were up but not all the way and 2 & 4 were down but not all the way.(cant really explain it) We also found out that the dizzy(the d rod inside the dizzy) off from the marker(dot). The thing is the guy said he never removed the oil pump so i can't figure out why the dizzy is off. It sounds like she wants to start(good crank) back fire in the intake. But i realy dont know. CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE!!!

if thats what your dizzy looks like at TDC its wrong. you should have a backwards D with the #1 piston on its compression stroke. You need to pull the oil pump out and re-insert the pin, it looks like you're off by more than a few teeth...

Do a quick compression test..
