Hello again,

I am here again to share with you all my 1.5JZ Build into my S14. I previously shared my original 1JZ swap into the S14. I decided to make this specific thread about this swap for future reference of other members.

At any rate, to get everyone up to speed as to where I am now, here is the link for the original 1JZ swap: #/f/chat/376821-s14-1jz-build.html

With the JZ swap becoming more and more prevalent into the S-Chassis such combination of the 2JZ and the 1JZ are inevitable. Originally, the notion that the 1JZ Head flowed better than the 2JZ head, thus many people decided to combine the two: 1JZ Head, 2JZ Bottom End...

However, the 1JZ Head, which was flow tested, actually flows ~20cfm less than the 2JZ Head. The only other difference is in that of air velocities, with the 1JZ Head at a higher velocity.

1JZ: 2.5 Liter
2JZ: 3.0 Liter

Bore of the engines is exactly the same. The 2JZ gains the extra displacement through a slightly longer stroke, thus making the block slightly taller.

For those of you who did not read my 1JZ build thread; My engine developed rod bearing clearance issues due to detonation. I explored just rebuilding the 1J, however, I would have spent quite a bit of finances on new 1J pistons/rods, irregardless of detonation damage.

My final choice was to purchase a Used 2JZGTE, pull the head off the 2J and put my 1J head on there and party. This option allows me to re-cooperate the money spent on the engine by re-selling the 2J Head, Intake, Turbos, ECU, Wiring Harness, AC Compressor, Water Pump, Cams, Etc. This option seemed the quickest way to have my S14 driving again and the most economical.

Other big factors include:
- 1J Head has HKS 264 cams
- Converted wiring harness into my S14 adapted to 1JZ
- Single Turbo setup/Fuel Rail/Injectors

Very clean engine, was previously mated to an automatic transmission.

Friend who was apart of the engine shipping asked me after I received my engine if I got my "surprise." I was confused; a few days later I go to clean up the shrink wrap the engine was covered with when I discovered this Flesh Light. Thanks Mike Pollard xD. Hahaha.

I will forever be amazed at how people convert these engines to a single turbo setup with the engine still in the car.

I will be switching the water pipe that snakes around the engine to the 2J Block.

Garage with all the JZ love.

I will continue to update this thread. I will now switch my focus to the 2J and preparing it for maintenance parts and the 1J Head/Single turbo conversion.

- Gates Timing Belt
- New 2J Timing Belt idler pulley
- Front/Rear Main Seals
- Timing Belt Guide
- ARP Head Studs
- OEM Toyota 2JZ Head Gasket
- OEM Toyota 2JZ Oil Pump
- I will transfer the 2J Water pump, timing belt tensioner, and alternator, water pump, and power steering pullies over to the 2J.

That's all for now,
Alex

Phew just read through your previous 1jz thread. awesome build and very informative!

However, here is the question of weight distribution I'm sure a lot of people like to know (if you haven't answer else where already). I'm sure based on your great experience in drifting and in mechanical, you would be a perfect person to ask.

1) How would you compare the weight difference between the SR and 1JZ?

2) Does it get in your way of drifting (nose heavier maybe?)?

3) There is the Driftwork S15 had its 2JZ moved backward and reconstructed its firewall. Do you foresee the necessity of doing this for the ideal weight distribution?

Thank you for the compliments.
As far as weight goes, I've only ever weighed the car with the SR, Myself, Cage: 2550 (around that). The mount kit I use actually bolts to the engine about 3-4 inches back from the center of the engine. However, the R154 is pretty heavy compared to the SR/KA 5-Speeds, so that helps. I also noticed the car sits about a 1/4'' lower in the front with the JZ, interesting.

Right off the bat though, the JZ is a cast iron block, with two more cylinders, the weight differences I'd imagine are about 100-200 lbs. total added?

Off came the 2J Head. I am very pleased with the condition of the engine. Cross-hatches are still very much present; the fact that this engine came from an automatic car is reassuring.

And the 1J head/Exhaust manifold on the 2J Bottom end.
Torque Sequence can be found in the TFSM. Head bolts are torqued to 3 sequences to a total of 80 ft. lbs.
1st Sequence: 35 ft. lbs.
2nd Sequence: 90 degrees from previous position
3rd Sequence: 75-80 ft. lbs.

This is the power steering pump support bracket we made. I had previously used it on the 1J and have transferred it over to this engine as well.

The JZ motors used two mounting points from the AC compressor to aid in the rigidity of the power steering pump. Since removing the compressor, the 1J specifically had a wobbly pump; this was a simple/easy fix.
http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq331/spartanhockey409/photo2-1.jpg?t=1324935960
Shot of the JZ/S-Chassis Motor Brackets/Avid Motor Mounts. Also shows the -10AN Oil Return for the turbo as well as the AN Feed. The rear oil feed is blocked off since I am using a single turbo.

Tonight/Tomorrow I will have the cams mounted and torqued to spec. I will also set the timing per the FSM's specifications. The cam torque will be rather time consuming as they require a torque to ~20 Ft. Lbs, then loosened, then re-torquing, a matter of 4 times...

Tomorrow I will have someone modify my upper water neck. This is another point of modification one runs into with the 1.5JZ. The 1J water neck, I had previously modified is too short to bolt to the head/fit in the water pump. Whereas the 2J water neck is still factory in it's sharp 90 degree turn it takes to plumb the water line in front of the upper timing cover.

I plan on modifying the 2J water neck to meet the upper radiator port on the passenger side of the car.

That's all for now!

Just judging by the massive amounts of research, trial, and error that he has gone through, I'm pretty sure he is spot on when it comes to the torque specs.... and I'm pretty sure he specified that he went with the AVID mount kit.

Debatable.
I lined everything out in the previous thread on one of the last pages; maybe page 4 or 5.

I appreciate the offer. I will keep this option in mind. I usually have a local guy do my welding, but I'm not sure if he's working this week.

Touge Factory; I get a majority of my parts from them.

I followed the torque requirements directly off the ARP sheet found in the head stud box.

Final torque specification of 80 ft. lbs in three sequences. To re-assure myself, I double checked on SupraMania/SupraForums for the exact torque specification. The best method to achieve these specifications were as I posted:

1st: 35 ft. lbs.
2nd: 90 degrees advanced from the previous position (~55 ft. lbs.)
3rd: 75-80 ft. lbs.

I did use the ARP grease provided on the threads, washers, and nuts.

That is correct they are Avid motor mounts. I paid, $120? I can't remember. Great mounts; Yes, they are solid, the air vents rattle at 60 mph, but I never cared, but were not annoying or disruptive at idle.

Hahaha thanks. That is at a friends house, I thought the same thing about that tree.

Absolutely, 1j head + 2j booty = retune. The 2jz has a longer stroke, bigger bore, and when mated with the 1jz head he is definitely going to have to re-tune it. Especially with this case since it has probably had head work done and an aftermarket turbo that will need to be dialed in to match the new powerband ( Never read your 1jz swap thread so I'm just assuming here ;) )

Imma jump in here real quick alled, I currently rock a Rb20 powered hatch and have to say that the difference in weight between the ka and my rb (which weighs less then a 1j with r154 but is still a pig of a motor) was noticable but NOT ina bad way at all..things i noticed immediatley after the swap

-No more plowing and much improved repnosiveness from the front end when initiating

honestly the additional weight over the wheels i really never noticed, car drives great does not feel nose heavy, dosnt plow one bit. then when you compare the power and sounds of a inline 6 over a 4cylinder you could careless about anything other then mashing the loud pedal. I also belive that with the right suspension set up you can over come any small issue like weight... im rocking PBM coils and my car responds so quick to steering input.

ok back on track

It sounds like he's referring to drifting on a competitive level, in which case there would probably be a noticeable amount of understeer based on the weight and placement of the motor. I don't believe the weight of this swap would be the issue, but the placement of the motor and how far back/low it is mounted to attain proper weight distribution. /end thread jack

Yes, I'll be having this re-tuned.

2J makes up the extra displacement through a longer stroke. The bore size is exactly the same, hence why the 1J head and 2J bottom end can mate properly.

The tune right now is for 93 Octane, GT35R, 680cc Injectors, HKS 264 cams, blah blah. The only difference between this 1.5JZ and the 1JZ tune is the bottom end. It will run and drive just fine with the current tune. I will not push my luck though.

Update Update!
It's been a long night, but I am a matter of hours away from a running 1.5JZ.

Instead of telling everyone what I completed, I'll just list whats left.

- Fill/Bleed Cooling System
- Install Exhaust, Intercooler Piping
- Torque Crank pulley bolt to 239 FT. Lbs <- should be fun XD
- Drain the rest of the gas out of the tank, re-fill with 100% 93 octane
- Install fuel rail/injectors/assemble fittings

That's about it, I'm sure I'm forgetting things...
Here are some pictures from tonight's extravaganza:

Really the cams made the difference. The HKS cams for these engines are stupid expensive. Also, I do go to school away from where the car is located, hence why I've been working on this non stop. Update for everyone.
Engine starts, runs, and idles great.

I've been running through the car fixing leaks, however. The heater hose pipe leaked, but is fixed. Next, apparently the oil drain gasket on the turbo broke, and leaked oil all over the manifold. I am going to re-make the -10 drain line with new gaskets and AN fittings.

Only concern remaining is confirmed seal of the headgasket.

Now, when we first started the engine, there was considerable white smoke exiting from the exhaust.
- Ran the car for about 10 minutes achieving about 140 degrees, slightly milky oil cap.
- Drained the oil with surprisingly almost no water/coolant in the oil.
- Fresh oil, started again, ran for 15 minutes achieving nearly 170 degrees.

Once the oil leaks are 100% fixed, I'll have a much more accurate confirmation of a proper headgasket seal.

I will be back in town in about a week to work on the car again.

Ding ding!
Exactly xD

Really the cams made the difference. The HKS cams for these engines are stupid expensive. Also, I do go to school away from where the car is located, hence why I've been working on this non stop. I would have love to have a complete 2JZ, but this route allowed me the quickest, cheapest way to have my car up and running.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. More progress today I hope!

I was wondering the same thing also, so good to know.

Is the 1j exh mani able to fit the 2j head?

And how did your old motor detonate?

Was it bad gas, over boost, or what?

Btw, you're gonna love that 2j bottom end.
The extra .5L is noticeable down low and out of boost.
It also helps to build boost quicker.

And IMO, get a retune.

Powered by Max Coils 10/8.

This is the GTE engine.
As I understood, oil modifications were required for the GE bottom end.

No, the exhaust manifold won't fit. Had that been the case, I would have just thrown the 2J in there and rebuilt the 1J on the side.

Old Motor detonated with bad gas X__X

Oil modifications are not need for the 1.5JZ. I have all three, a 1JZ, 1.5JZ and a 2JZ. The feed hole is on an incline.

How do I know, I did a huge write up on SupraMania.com in the 1JZ section. "JZ Swap Guide For Dummies". Name is IBoughtASupra on there where I sell catch cans as well

A fair amount for such power levels.
As far as the JZ vs. KA-T, cost discrepancies will be significant.
Build what best suits your budget and ability to maintain the engine.

Just a small update.
The 1.5J is now running beautifully. Even drove it up the street today.

Anyways, the previous -10 oil drain I used on the 1J was too long. Oil was backing up and blowing out the gasket and through the seals in the turbo. I drastically shortened the oil drain which quickly alleviated that issue.

I then ran the car for a solid 45 minutes, bled the cooling system. The next day, I compression tested the engine.

Bam. Perfect compression across the board. What a huge sigh of relief. Drove the car around, idled at 13.5:1 A/F Ratio. Over spring break in a few weeks, I'll get the engine re-tuned for the extra displacement of the 2J bottom end.

Turbo off to change the drain line. Probably the 5th or 6th time I've had it off in the past two days...

So long for now.
Trying to track down a HKS DLI. I'll wire that up, take it to get dyno tuned. With the HKS DLI, 2J Bottom End, and the same boost level as the 1J (18.5 PSI) I expect about 550 wheel, and about 470 torque...

I'll be sure to actually take a video of the dyno this time xD

60-1, .70 A/R
I was about full boost on the 1J just under 3,800 RPM.
I don't know on the 2J yet. I need a re-tune before I can even think about boost. I'd imagine with the extra displacement the spool time will only get quicker.

IBoughtAS13
02-28-2012, 11:59 AM
It will be much fatter under the curve. You will hit that boost even about 800-1000 RPM sooner. That 60-1 will spool utterly quick, a 6262 will be in your future. It avoids the lag of a 67 and is super responsive for your power level.

Horsepower: 470, 515 (Un-corrected)
Torque: 460, 480 (Un-corrected)
Boost Level: 15lbs.
Fuel: 93 Octane

The previous 1J tune which made 463,507 RWHP, was on 18.5 PSI. Quite incredible the difference that 3 liter bottom end makes. Also, due to the displacement differences, about 23% more fuel was needed, I am now using 48% injector duty cycle.

Also, we would have gone higher on the boost pressure, however I started misfiring. I am in desperate need of a HKS DLI! If anyone has one, or knows someone, LET ME KNOW.

Hearing the car on the dyno after all the hours of work and concern about headgaskets was so pleasing. The JZ sounds exiting the shop garage were incredible.

So, I packed my car up and headed 2 miles up the street to my favorite car shop, Touge Factory.

I purchased a new wheel:

KEY!S Racing, 330mm Deep Dish, Suede. It will be here in about 6-8 weeks.

ALSO! I purchased some Driftworks Geo master front spindles and offset rack spacers. CAN'T WAIT!

That's all for now fellas.

Oh, and since this engine is so much taller, my hood won't close. Going to try and figure something out for that.

Small update.

I have the car running flawlessly now. Tomorrow everything is going to paint. Hopefully next week, I'll have the car back and finished! Only things left motor wise are to wire in the HKS DLI.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/581191_3139192680854_1296000280_32132047_558833116 _n.jpg
I modified the core support to allow my flex-a-lite fans clearance. Absolutely NO cooling issues anymore!

Made new motor mounts out of solid aluminum, bored the center out and ran a bolt through them. I have the engine sitting perfectly, however, I'll make a skid plate to help clearance issues.

Also, added some heat reflect on the exhaust side. After a short drive a few days after my tune the exhaust melted a hole in the heater hose line. I found some 2,000F radiant temperature heat reflect and clamped it to the downpipe; hope it suffices xD.

Lastly, installed a new 200 Amp alternator. With the fans, radio, fuel pumps running, I was having voltage drops. Absolutely no more issues whatsoever.

Took it for a night drive. No plates yet, so I have to be careful xD.

Here's a bit more of an update:

While the car was at paint from May-July, I stock piled parts.

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/574949_3476118183781_940459513_n.jpg
Bought a set of rears to match the fronts.

Also, Tein Inner/Outer Tie Rods, OEM Ball Joints, Energy LCA Bushings, SPL Tension Rods. Last Thursday, I drove down to where the car was being painted, ~100 miles away; installed the HKS DLI and looked over the car. The new color had not been sprayed.

After a few nights of hardly any sleep, Charlie Quatmann, the painter, finished the car just in time for a local drift event here in St. Louis. At the lunch break of the event, he delivered the car to the track. It was the first time I'd seen the new color as well as everyone else. Total surprise as only a few friends knew what color I was actually painting it.

The car did phenomenal. I was breaking up under boost a bit, so we re-gapped the plugs and BAM, it ran it's ass off. Surprisingly as I hadn't seen the car for almost 2 months. The hood did have to come off as the heat from the turbo and fiberglass vent weren't getting along. I'll add some spacers or heat shield accordingly.

The risers don't actually affect your ride height. All the risers do is change the angle of your arms (for the better). Here is the conversation between MAX and I:

Me: I have a dilemma. I have driftworks knuckles front and rear on my s14 with your coilovers. I am out of adjustment in the rear and its too low. I mean un-drivable low lol! The front is fine. Is there any way you have longer rear lower mount that would fit? It would only have to be a few inches.

MAX: I have a damper here that is 13 inches (black part) 4.25 inches of stroke, (chrome part) 20 inches overall length.

You do not need a longer damper for SFR - it is raising the other side (subframe side) of the arms/rods not the coilover (knuckle) mount side

Edit: I realized how dumb my comment was about the subframe risers after I posted it xD.

I spoke with MAX yesterday as well. They are looking into making me longer dampers, approximately 50mm to be exact. I will post my results. If they are ~$100-120/side, I'll oblige.

They were $200 for the pair... But I can't guarantee that's stil the price of course.

Update!

Fuel System Overhaul

After the Kansas event on August 18th, I brought the car home and parked it in the garage. The next day, I noticed this...

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/s720x720/206063_3674297178132_1006137049_n.jpg

An hour later, the subframe and fuel tank are out.

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/217919_3737548079365_1020945948_n.jpg
All finished and wired!
The fuel pump is LOUD.

I spent the extra money on this fuel cell to have peace of mind. I always wanted adaptability. If I were to switch to E85 later down the road, the fuel cell/tank/fittings are all adaptable. Especially since the outlet from the tank is a -10 AN.

We finished everything on Friday evening about midnight. Filled the tank with 5 gallons, then drove to a gas station. After brimming the tank, one of the fittings failed and fuel spewed...So, we made the 20 minute drive home, grabbed my trailer, and loaded the car up. 4 am comes around and I finally get home.

On Saturday, I ran to a local speed shop, grabbed another fitting and everything worked perfectly with no leaks!

I am very happy with how everything turned out. We have Import Face off on September 23 locally at Gateway Motorsports Park.

So long for now! I'm sure there are more changes to come!

Also, Powered by Max is looking into making me longer dampers. Then I'll be able to install my rear Driftworks Geomasters.

This is my particular favorite. That's Omar driving his 302 powered S13. He's the owner of Nocturnal Motorworks/JDMHookup in St. Louis; such a tremendous fabricator.

Tomorrow morning we have a private day at Gateway Motorsport Park on the road course; myself and about 15 other drivers for the entire day. It has been about two years since I've driven there. Last event, I had my stock SR and had to drive with my foot to the floor for the whole course. I'm extremely excited to drive the car on the course with all the changes/grip.

More updates to come as I continually change the car!

I just read through your first build with the 1jz and now this thread. I am fully amazed on what you have done since I am currently thinking about power. However, the only issue I have before a power plant is a need of a second car.

I am definitely subscribed to this since your s14 is badass!

Hello everyone!
I'm back to begin another chapter of the S14's build, re-build, and improvements.

Finished off last season here in St. Louis with two events at Gateway Motorsports Park on the road course.

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/253095_4196535910279_1483385518_n.jpg
Here's a picture of the entry from the Driver Invitational in October . Every time I was getting deeper and deeper into angle entering in the middle of 4th gear.

As you can see, my headlight is gone, well I went off track through turn 4 at about 100 mph after a tire de-laminated, all grip was lost, so I slid in the grass for about 100 feet and slow rolled into a tire barrier at ~20 mph.

Welp. I finished the rest of the event, then as I was loading on the trailer, the intercooler SMACKED the lip of the trailer and cracked. Shit luck x__X. The mounts had bent down from the off-track hit, I hadn't noticed.

Another shot from that event!

Small update; I had to share this one with you all.

Car goes off to the cage builder the 1st week of February. More pictures thus after!

In the meantime, I was going to have the car parked at a booth for the St. Louis Auto Show, however, it is in 500 pieces. So the next best thing?

A 6'5'' poster of it!

Finally another update for everyone!

I got the car back from paint/front-end work on Thursday March 28th as a rolling, interiorless chassis. We had exactly 8 days to put EVERYTHING together.

Luckily, my spring break was the same week, so I could devote all my time to the car.

So we started and after seven hours of work, here is where I ended up:
https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/579318_4637850746369_362868873_n.jpg
Oh, by the way, the interior and engine bay are white xD

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/386566_4599158459086_2119933528_n.jpg
I put these on because the Driftworks ones wouldn't work with my coilovers.
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/531860_4658489982337_1601260402_n.jpg
This is now Wednesday, April 3rd and the car runs and drives!

As per every pre-event ritual, alignment time, because I'm picky!
This is my most aggressive and gripy alignment to date.

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/544883_4660662556650_1912300156_n.jpg
Tire sponsorship vinyls.

So, we headed to DriftIndy/Club FR No Star Bash on April 6th and 7th. I made four runs on Saturday before blowing my turbo, bad! Oil hit the spark plugs and fouled everyone out.

The turbo failed at about 12:00 pm, so I quickly grabbed a couple pair of hands and we had the turbo off in about 15 minutes. I luckily found a turbo shop open near Downtown St. Louis, and by 4 pm, I had a freshly rebuilt turbo!

Sadly, the event was over by the time the car was running. On to Sunday!

We got to the track early and wanted to diagnose a sporadic misfire. I finally got it fixed after switching coilpacks around and replacing one pair. Also, we had to make a blow-off valve block off plate overnight because my Greddy Type-R was leaking!

All the bugs were finally worked out. I drove the car ALL day Sunday, hot lapping it. Let's just say it ran it's ASS OFF. The alignment was perfect, tons of grip and speed, I loved it.

Also, I got to be apart of a special shoot with BG and Brian within the Hoonigan video, so keep your eyes peeled for that video soon!

Hello everyone. Sorry for my hiatus!

Just to get everyone up to speed. I ran the complete MDU series last year. The car ran incredible all season. We had some great qualifying places and some very high finishes putting me 9th in points!

Now, I have taken a step back from the car as my first child was born. We welcomed into the world a lovely and healthy daughter in November of 2013.

I have been working very hard to finish my undergraduate studies and have been on a preparation track to go to law school in the Fall of 2014.

Deep breath; so life has been quite busy!

Here are a few photos to get everyone up to speed:

Hung out with my dog a lot.

That's all for now! We have some plans and changes for 2014; nothing too crazy as I had originally planned. But I'll be sure to keep everyone up to speed.

One more thing. We will welcome Axcel Sports to the group of sponsors for 2014. They have custom built me a fire suit for my extra height. I'll have pictures of that soon!

Thanks for all the support everyone!

This may have been answered, but why didn't you just buy a 2J-GE? You could pick one up dirt cheap.

Any updates?

Congrats on the birth of your first child!

Do you have any pictures how you mounted the Pole Position? I would like to mount mine to the floor too.

How is everyone!?

IT has been a LONG time since a real update to this thread. Let's get everyone up to speed.

Last season, I ran a lot of around town and local midwest 'fun' events and competed in half of the Midwest Drift Union series. In August I started law school. Then, coupled with an awesome, now 15th month old daughter, I have almost no time. That's what summer is for!

At any rate, the season ended abruptly at Midwest Drift Union in Kansas. I drove my way into the top 4. However, I could not compete for the podium. After a victory to push me into the top 4, the car developed a rod knock....AGAIN. I shut the engine off, called it a day, called it a season, and cheered on my best friends.

I have priced out may different options and have yet to pull the trigger. I tossed around the idea of parting the car out and taking a break for a while.

In the beginning of May, the car will make its comeback!

With another Toyota JZ engine, of course.

Enjoy the pictures everyone.

Take care!

This is a video my great friend Jay made with his Nokia Lumia cell phone... also my main pit crew at all events we go to.

We did a cool and simple vinyl setup. The car looked great last year!

Fun track in Iowa we drove for MDU.
The car had ALL sorts of gliches we had to work out for this event, but once fixed, it ran awesome.

Can also see the custom fire suit that was made for me by Axcel. It is an awesome suit and fits me perfectly.
