anyone swapped out their mech fan, and replaced it with electic fans? Anyone know the measurements for the electric fans?
how much difference did you notice?
any tips on doing this?
thanks

its fairly easy to do this. most fans are mounted without shrouds, if you do this, then make sure your cfm is high enough. i'm no airflow expert, but i definitely do know that 2,950 cfm from the fan i'm about to purchase will blow more than a $5 hooker, the ka24de asks for no more. typically the mounting kits for universal fans are nylon stick-like objects that go through the rad fins and have a crimp on the other end (the words i used to describe the mounts are bad, but you'll see when you get them) good luck choosing a good fan, this is probably one of the most appealing under the hood mods imo simply because i hate seeing shrouds and water pump clutch fans.
now if fal would only make the damn prefit dual fan w/ shroud package for the s14s this wouldn't have required so much typing. damn FAL, damn them to hell.

here's my fans on a koyo. bought the fans off of heavythrottle with the thermo switch. yeah, that's an sr radiator for my ka, and it's causing a ton of headaches. it's been, and still seems impossible, for me to get a custom intake built. that set-up has been sitting on my floor for 8 months.

you can get a 12" flex-a-lite from jegs or summit for ~$100

Well I tried to pull up the Installs page on 240sx.org....I know they have a couple of people that put in electric cooling fan(s) and show how they wired them up,and what they used and etc...But the page won't pull up

I got a 14'' car quest fan on a aluminum rad. I didn't want to use the mounts they gave me. Too scary. I had my welder buddy make me mounts that bolt to the fan and the stock shroud mounting holes. He even painted it gloss black. Looks very nice and I don't have to worry about the weird zip-tie things ripping fat holes in my nice new rad.

That setup WILL work like shit. There is no shroud. You need a shroud. There is a reason the dual 12" FAL fans are so popular...

yellwmonky: yeah, the kazama tension rods are the bomb. I just had my nismo power bar powdercoated to match them. all going on after new year's, i can't wait!
uiuc240: why is that setup going to work like shit? I see people running dual 12" with NO shroud all the time. these fans also pull a good 1650cfm each. The dual FAL fans are only 10" per SCC.

Do you guys really need all that CFM? I have been running a single 9 in. fan on my car since 2000 and the only time it turns on is if I am stopped at a light or in traffic. My temps never get anywhere near high enough to run anything bigger. Anyone that has the big fans also running a coolant temp gauge? I am curious as to what temp you are running. I seriously hope you guys have a temperature sensor so the fans only turn on when needed. There is a such thing as running too cool too.

yeah, i run wayyyy to cool. if im moving i run at about 105. all the time. pushing the car only makes it go down. my block craxked where the bottom bolt goes for the water neck, so its all RTV sealanted up, so i dont have a thermostat. sitting itll go up to 180, with heat on full itll sit right at 150. as soon as i start moving it goes down the just above 100. oh, i have no fans, no thermo, no a/c in the way.

Yeah thats way to cool! 180 is just starting to get into operating temp. You may want to look at blocking off the radiator some. Your car will run better and you will use less gas!

Go to the junkyard and pick which size you want. Single, double, triple, push, pull, single speed, dual speed, etc.... You get the picture. Most junkyards sell electric fans for about $20-$25 dollars each. Advance Auto sells a thermostat control for about $20.

If you want to go the cheap but effective route, grab the dual e-fans from a KA-powered Altima. Wire 'em up with that $20ish thermoswitch from whatever auto parts store you have nearby and a few feet of wire and connectors, and you've got a great-fitting fully shrouded electric fan setup for less than $100.

I installed dual electric fans from a '96 Nissan Stanza. The Fitment isn't great, but with some dremmeling and cutting of one of the fan blades, i'm now free of my ugly looking mechanical fan. And by the way...I have no clue how much air these fans pull, but it's amazing. They do an incredible job of cooling my engine. I used that themostatic relay switch to regulate the fans and it works great.
Right now, i'm custom fabricating my own aluminum radiator shroud to cover that ugly gap between the grill and radiator support...should look pretty trick when it's finished.

The nice thing about the dual shrouded fans is that they almost never come on. When they do, they run for about 30 seconds. It's such a nice setup. If people really want to go cheap, why buy a 240 and swap in an SR in the first place? Complaining about a set of fans? Sheesh.
Oh, and yes, I do have a guage. Normal driving, the temp sits at 180 once it warms. When I'm stuck in traffic, it'll sit closer to 195. 210 is the event horizon. :aw:
P.S. Alan...I'm at .85 bar now :D

I heard recently that the Volvo S80 electric fan / shroud is an option as well. And the FAL Black Magic is another nice fan with shroud, you can see it on the Jspc S13 at their website or in the January Import Tuner.
