Hey guys, I just recently replaced my starter due to problems with the original starter (20 years old) solenoid clicking and not starting/slow cranking.
So heres the deal.
-Brand new battery
-Brand new starter
Every once in a while when I turn the key it won't crank, but if I turn the key off and on a few times it will start fine. I'm wondering what this could possibly be. The only things I can think of from searching the forum would be clutch switch, ignition switch, or ground.
If anyone has any idea or information it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

more than likely your ignition switch
remember, its 20 year old car...and that thing has been turned a few billion times
ive had to replace ignition switches in 3 out of the 5 s13s ive owned...like any mechanical part, it gets old, wears out, stops working

I've seen that with most of the problems with the ignition switches the warning lights on the cluster go nuts.
Is it possible to have a shitty switch without any weird lights?
And yes it's a remanufactured hitachi starter from autozone.

did you have your old starter checked to see if it was any good?
check the power wire for corrosion, and the signal wire as well.

old starter tested "inconclusive" but the symptoms of it was indicative of a bad starter
It was the original nissan starter from when it rolled off the line in 1991.
The wires looked fine, I even took a wire brush to the terminal that bolts to the solenoid. The plug wire I didnt get a chance to look at but I can't imagine it was bad.
sound stupid but check all your connections are super tight
for your health

my car did this
sand down your 12v and ground wires and use that battery wire brush and clean off both side of the battery
make sure everything is tight

uh, that sounds like a completely unreleated issue (the cluster going nuts)...a bad ignition switch just turns and does nothing

Well the negative terminal is new since the old one was cracked and wasn't tight. Positive side I used a tool for shaving off and cleaning terminal connections. Everything is super tight as far as me yankin on it an it won't move.
It's really sounding like the switch. My ground wire is weird though. It looks like it goes to the battery->something right under the battery tray->spot on the intake manifold.
If no other ideas I'll go through all the suggestions from cheapest and easiest on so if I do replace a bunch it won't be too bad.
