i have enough money for either a kaaz 2way lsd (zilvia group buy) or a nismo 2way (www.phase2motortrend.com). Both drop into the US open-diff pumpkin and need no additional parts, and prices are w/in $100 of each other. i imagine the nismo is better, but that's just an assumption. phase2 does not have much of the tech info on their site (i've sent out an email to them but i wanted to ask here as well). Is one of them better than the other? Which one should i buy?

I have only driven on a Kaaz and a VLSD, wouldn't know about the NISMO one, other than it is harder to get fixed if I remember Dousan saying somethin bout it on Nadines boards....

yo
nismo kaaz tomei cusco
fuck it
to the average joe it sall the same
society mike put it basically as this (not perfect quote)
over time you dont care what brand it is, just that it locks up when you WANT it to.
ie: torque breakaway
nismo sss (what i have...now replaced by nismo GT PRO) is 3 way torque breakaway ajdustable WITHOUT disassembly or dropping diff. takes like 1 hour MAX if that..if i wasnt so slow, wAY LESS
the new kaaz is 3 way i think also but you MUSt dissasmelby the GUTS of the LSD (take out lsd from pumpkin, take apart, rearrange)
but go for the kaaz because
1) usa support
2) great lsd
3) does the job to the "T"
nismo if you want different lsd, or gt pro if you go balls out :)
oh, btw
I LOVE MY NISMO SSS, I WANT TO MARRY IT I LOVE IT SO MUCH, ITS A GREAT UNIT. IF I BUY ANOTHER LSD, NISMO GT PRO

I love my new Kaaz unit. Bolt in with USDM flanges. AWESOME lock up even at 80% locking (which is equivalent to 100% locking on older Kaaz unit). One of the best parts on the car.

thanks for the info, i can now feel that i've made an educated decision. i'm sure i'll be very happy with my new kaaz lsd in a few weeks (can't wait). peace.

Dousan, 3 way ?? "wtf mate?"

3 way referring to torque breakaway settings
that's what my whole post was about.
i think its 3 way? maybe it was 4?
iirc, there was 100% lock up, 80%, 40%? I forget..someone call KAAZ.

Actually from what Ray (kaaz) was telling me its more then 3 way. I think you can go 100, 80, 60, 40 and 25 or something. I could be wrong though. Bah just to lazy to pick up the phone. I don't really see myself going past 80% anyway unless I am putting down more power.

how many clutch plates are on the nismo gt pro?
new kazz = 18 plates
nismo gt pro = ?
tomei technical trax advnace = 16 plates (upgradable to 24)
and i think the os giken lsd is a 32 plate monster.
there's also ats with carbon plates for chatter free operation on splparts site.
of course theres more brands out there like cusco and others.

plates dont mean SQUAT
its all about torque breakaway!
if my 8 plate (as example) LSD engages faster and harsher in a way I WANT IT TO, then id buy it over your 24 plate LSD
its like buying a chrome plated part or a painted part..does it do the job the way you want? YES then buy the one that's a better deal
gt pro is 20 plates
sss is 16 plates
but the GT PRO plates are much larger compared w/ the SSS
edit im sure the # of plates DO make a difference, but when it comes down to it..does ti engage how i want? Yes, does it hold well when locked? yes.
then i dont care. as long as it acts the way i want it under accel, deaccel and inbetween, then that's all that matters.

Thats a link to my post in the FAQ/Archive explaining diffs. Its a good read (thats why its in teh archive, duh). I will just cut and paste the relevant info at hand...
"Need it be said that a 2 way then is shaped just about like a diamond? Where it requires almost the same amount of acceleration or deceleration to force the casing apart. Usually, the top cuts are slightly more dramatic, making the 2 way still require slighlty more deceleration force to push the cam to expand the casing.
Ok, there is more. The more the casing expands, the more clutches contact each other, and the more the output shafts get locked into the same rotation. Now there are adjustable diffs where you can set a breakaway torque. That means that the cluch discs get moved closer together or further apart to dictate the SOFT, MED, or HARD setting. The closer the clutch plates are to each other, the sooner the output shafts, and thus the wheels, will spin in sync."
That touches on 2way and adjustable diffs.
A note about the SSS (which i also have and LOVE). You can rotate the outer casing to be cut for 2 way engagement OR 1.5 way. This is good cause 2-way is good for drifting and 1.5 for road racing (helical is best for road racing imo thogh). Anyway, it requires you to dissasemble the diff todo this, but its do able for sure.
Like Aaron said, the SSS's breakaway torque can be adjusted w/o taking it apart (just have to unbolt one halfshaft (passenger side).
Another quick note... your choice of clutch (engine clutch) will somewhat dictate how harsh the engagement of your LSD is. Hm.
blah blah blha, just go read that thread.

yep daily drive
fun in all conditions BUT rain where it can be dangerous at times hahaha
other then that, its not so bad. i dont make turns all day, most of it is freeway time and minimal streets. its NOT as bad as one might think

road racing and a little drag? definately a clutch pack (like the kaaz nismo etc discussed here) find the SCC article on project silvia where they installed the LSD on Dave Coleman's car. did a good breakdown of whats suited for what.
I wanna know how different that Cusco type RS with the springs feels on initial lock up. My Nismo's been making lots of noise. I think it's getting close to rebuild time. but I wanna go back to the S14 pumpkin. hehe I'm gonna end up moving to the ATL for a month to get crap done to the car.
