So I'm wondering if this setup NEEDS to have an aftermarket ecu tune or even a standalone for the following mods to be SAFE.
S13 Redtop SR20det
S14 T28 Turbo
Aftermarket wastegate set at 12lbs
N60 MAF
Greddy intake manifold
large intercooler and piping
aftermarket exhaust manifold
3 inch downpipe and 3 inch exhaust
It running a STOCK 62 ECU. Can I run this safely or do I HAVE to get a chipped ecu or standalone?
If so, what do you suggest? Thanks!

I say go with an RS-Enthalpy ecu and get some 550cc injectors on top.

Is JWT or Nistune REQUIRED NOW or will I just get more power? IE: can I drive around town/to work with this stuff on my stock ECU? Track days?
My concern: My wideband shows 13.5-14.5 at WOT in all gears and 15-16 at 1/4-3/4 throttle and just cruising around town. Should I stop driving till I get a tune?
13.5 at WOT is lean...GET A TUNE before you damage/break something

Yeah, don't go flooring it any more with air fuel ratio like that. However your partial throttle is fine so you can cruise around with it how it is until you can afford a tune.

How much are these tunes? I looked on jwt site and it looks like they charge 600. Is that about the price range everyone pays? If so, why not just pay a little extra for a real standalone? For some reason I thought those generic "tunes" were like 200 bucks

The problem with standalone isnt the cost of the system. Its the cost of install and tune that gets you. I know guys who went full AEM and spent over $2.6k for the parts, install and full tune.

Gotcha. So just pay the 600 for the generic flash tunes? Any company you suggest? JWT vs. Nistune vs ????

[email protected] is extremely lean, im sure the engine is knocking like no tomorrow don't do any WOT, if you have testpipes 15:1afr cruising is perfect for gas milage, 16:1 is lean and pushing it.
I would say get a Nistune and Tune it, or Give JWT A call, JWT is in California and they are local been in business for ages and can definetly set you up a good tune, only downside to a Chipped ECU is having to pay all the time for retunes, and not being able to look at the tune yourself and make small corrections to make it run better.
IMO first choice would be a Nistune with a Dyno Tune, 2nd option would be a Mail order tune from JWT.

What part of socal are you in? If near San Diego pm me and I can tune your setup. I use nistune with a majority of basic builds and have no issues. For the price you cant beat it. We also offer dyno tuning if you are interested.

im running practically the same setup since january with no tune. it runs kinda rich and waste gas but no problems. i dont beat it up and have my hks wastegate still at 8lbs. Im doing a nistune this month so i can get better performance and reliability! but i will do a tune soon if i was you, im just lucky nothing has bad happened to mine since i dropped my motor in :)

I would just stick a safc on it and some 444cc injectors from an S15.
1. Using OEM injectors will be cheaper and more reliable than using anything else
2. Using a safc is generally a bad idea except in this particular situation- A tapped OEM turbocharger on some OEM injectors.
you should also use the OEM maf sensor. No need to pay for any kind of tune. Buy a wideband and dial the air fuel ratio back on the SAFC until it hovers around 11.5~ the entire full throttle run and you are set.
Of course, a stand alone such as Power FC would be ideal. But my recommendation is based on COST as the deciding factor. A safc is the cheapest solution, and it is safe in this particular instance.
