s14 and s15 sr20

how can i distinguish between the s14 and s15 sr20 by just looking at the motor as it stands on a skid??
and are all s15 6-spd??

yes s15 is all 6 speed if they are sr20det.
sr20de are 5 speed (varietta and autech)
visually, er..not 100% sure
i think the 'ridges' on the head and some other visual ones
someone knwos more. ive seen quite a few but dont really care

not sure if this really matters,but to distinguish a s13 and a s14 motor, you can tell by the valve cover. The s13 is all "straight" and the s14 has a slope near the end of the valve cover. thats from what i remember.

I have heard that the turbo is different, so maybe you can check by looking at the turbo?

The ridges on the s14 motors are to distinguish the zenki and kouki motor. If it has ridges is a kouki motor, if it does not is a zenki motor. I bought a 98 front clip and that is a kouki motor b/c it has the ridges on the head.:)

The 'cooling ridges' on the head, are different between the S14 zenki, kouki, and S15 engines.

To quote rockso (assuming he's right):


The Zenki 93-96 s14 motors have no fins in the centered rectangle indent on the front of the head.

The Kouki 97-98 motors have fins that run through the whole rectangle indent on the front of the head

The S15 motors fins that go half way down in the rectangle indent.

note. There are fins on all of the S14 heads on the sides, you need to look in the center indent, thats where it matters

You can also tell black top and red top S13 motors apart by the fins too
The black top 180sx motor has fins in the rectange, the redtop dosent.


Although they have a spat on this near the end too =P

It seems you can tell the zenkis and koukis at least by the oil pressure sensor.

Maybe you can tell the kouki and S15 by the color of the fuel injectors?
