From rust to riches - the ka24debt build thread

Alright, so this is gonna be a long read so if you dont feel like reading feel free to skim straight through the pictures so here it goes. As we know, every build has a history, a story of how it comes to be so heres my story. In december of 2008 i was just your normal 18 year old kid, a senior in highschool, job, girlfriend, thinking about college yadayada with a pos car whos been into cars since i was born and always wanted to have a car that i could call my own, built and something always admired. I had a 92 maxima, paid 400 bucks it started every single day, had tinted windows, ac and heat just your normal get around car to school/work/gf's house etc. one day in december on my way to my girlfriends house the transmission starts to slip and a few hours later on my way back home the car wouldnt go past 25 mph.. basically the tranny was fried and my normal 35 min trip home turned into over an hour and a half on the highway, fab. upset, annoyed, and short on cash to buy a decent car that would last, i came to the realization that it could have just been a blessing in diguise. i could finally own a car to call my own and actually put together just like my father. i look up to my father alot and the iroc-z that hes owned before i was even born. that car and my father had a bond like no other, modified to his taste and a car that hes owned longer then having me for a son is what i call a true car enthuisast. of course i was brain washed as a kid that chevy was always better then ford and every other car. he always told me would give me the his one day and when i had no car i finally asked him if i could have the keys to the iroc his response was, "NO."
So then began my search to find an iroc. A few weeks in searching and only 1000 bucks.. there was no way in hell i was finding a decent running one for that amount of money. So i gave up on that quest and began to look on ebay for cars, and thats when i laid eyes on it.. a 1992 240sx hatch back that was red and the current bid was $400 with 3 bids on it. At the time it had the original ka with 199k on it, 5 spd, had a apexi n1 exhaust, kyb agx shocks with tein s tech springs, koyo rad, intake, momo steering wheel, clear corner turn signals a tint. long story short janurary 3rd 2009, i wound up winning the bid for $1025 and the car was local. my first thoughts upon physically seeing the car was, "holy shit this car is so low!!(LMFAO.) it sounded nice, it was a hatchback(just like the iroc i wanted) but with flip ups (so i was different and not jocking my dad). and this is where it all begins. W T F did i just get myself into.

So mind you this is my first 5 speed car and my dad drove it home for me, so 2 weeks after snow clears i finally get in my car and learn how to drive it. of course as a n00b, i stall it, i go to start it up again and it wouldnt come back on. and this is where i learned first hand that i was gonna have a special bond with this car(and any 240 because all 20 year old cars have their share of headaches that come with it) dont know why but we wound up pushing it to the gas station and putting gas in. it turned on and i barely brought it back home. a couple of weeks of getting comfortable with the car i finally decide to take it to school and its smoking like holy hell. wound up being there was absolutely no clutch fluid in the car and the clutch is on its last leg. months go by, i begin to learn alot more about my car, modifications.. typical 240 q&a, things to look for (should have researched this before i got the car lol). learning more and more and becoming more hands on with my own car came hand in hand with headaches after headaches. timing chain rattling, foot sized holes of rust under my carpet, frame rails, strut towers and mis matched paint.. sounds like i have a clunker 240. instead of having the joy of wanting to modify whatever i wanted to the car, it seem like instead it knew when my shitty $100-150 pay checks from my $7 and hour job would come in. and by that i mean that my car knew when to fall apart on me. not being discouraged by others i chose to continue to waste my money replacing parts on a total piece of shit car.. why? because i worked hard for it and its something i could call my own and i hoped one day my car would look like this vv

by feburary of 2010.. still replacing every part imaginable the ka clunker decided to knock. 5000 miles of easy driving, it finally let go on the verazano bridge going UP the bridge -_-. i still managed to start right up and drive for about another 1/4 mile before finally coasting downhill.

once again, shit out of luck and 600 to my name, knowing i wasnt going to find another car, i went with the option of finding another clunker ka. turns out my luck could be changing after all. i found a all oem ka rebuild with only 2000 miles on craigslist for 400 bucks.. only con the cam idler gear had stripped on the block. i went to check it out, it was super clean internally and came with paperwork? SOLD! so i brought it to a friends close friend who was mechanically inclined(i def. wasnt inclined enough to do a motor swap) i was shown the ropes and finally for once started getting my hands dirty in my own car.

got some love and installed a unorthodox light weight crank pulley, helicoiled and repaired the cam idler gear screw, resassembled the acessories and transmission with an exedy replacement.

a few days later, cleaned up, kinks fixed we're back on the road

finally relieved, i had a perfectly running ka and still working that shitty $7hr job, i attempted to save up for some parts.. here and there i replaced bushings, got a radio, speakers, subwoofer, crappy arms (typical broke 19yr old kid shit while fantasizing about have a sr and coilovers and being one of those cool gangster slammed car was all i wanted to have my car to look)

Around august of 2010 it finally hit me that this love/hate relationship i have with my red s13 isnt going to last much longer.. the rust is getting out of control and this car is becoming a money a pit im either going to
a. buy a whole other car
b. find another shell and make dreams a reality
i chose option b. make it a reality. so i made a zilvia account named ka24debt.. a crappy s13 i put all my money into with a ka that i wanted to boost since it was a fresh rebuild with arp studs and all.

september 12th 2010, in the cars for sale section i found what would be my new s13. it was a black hatchback with a blown sohc, automatic trans, 131k, NO rust and full interior. on my birthday september 18th i picked the car up for 525 bucks.. happy 20th birthday to me! a black s13 was something i always wanted to own.

5 months of dreaming, saving i was ready to make it happen. my red s13 finally got to live out its dream.. i had picked up a set of stance gr pro's with swift springs from a friend for a trade of my shock/spring combo and 500 on top

i got to drive my red s13 hatch with the one main goal i wanted to have accomplished.. be "gangster slammed" on some "cool wheels" no regrets, i drove my car home for the last time and before i turned it off, in a sad but optimistic tone i told the car, "thanks for the headaches, im gonna miss you but theres only way to go from here and that is up.. i rubbed my un cracked dash(cleanest thing on that car lawl) and turned it off. i had to stop driving it because my license had become suspended for 3 months starting in janurary.

i became cool with negrosx13 on our forum and he was totally down to help me swap chassis' and thats how our good friend ship began. the winter of 2011 was BRUTUAL. it snowed every single day in nyc and we had passed our snowfall record by almost 3 feet. we got down to business got to work. hours later with jackstands caving thru the car from rust we finally got the ka out with almost 2.5 inches of snow currently falling on us.

with the a actual mindset of where i want to go with this build i knew i wanted i wanted a kouki replication of that black speedhunters s13 but with a slight twist.. a ka-t.

attention to detail on a tight budget my hope of what will set me apart from people with full time careers, homes and these baller builds with close to no budget. mind you im 20, working almost 20 hours a week in a job i hate making shitty pay and still a full time college student.

now down to business. my friend who powdercoats hooked it up with a candy purple valve cover job.

parts piling up. got new exhaust bushings, motor and trans mounts, rucas, tension rods, traction rods, rear sway bar, energy suspension full bushing kit and coilovers

installed everything, pushed the car out of the garage, doubled checked that all fuses were good and no electrical issues. seems that everything is good!

get in there! also wound up getting a circuit sports coolant tank, and obx header. emmisions were all deleted before we dropped it back in.

and here we have what was funding any additional parts. i made almost 900 bucks parting out this whole car which i was very excited but sad at the same time. atleast it went to a good cause to help out other s13's!

so it got to the point where it could stay and i trashed the shell. the next day i got plates for the black s13 and hit the road! but theres always a catch the first time i drive a car for the first time

no idea how the fuck this happened because i triple checked the spacers before i even bolted it on to the wheel and now i have this fucked up fender.. fabolous.. -__-

turns out the lugs backed out and i wound up finding my wheel a half mile down the road.

a few months go by headache free, no issues but all good things come to an end of course. solid motor and tranny mounts were loosening everything imaginable on my car.. vibrations were backing bolts out. my alternator belt flew off on the highway because my tensioner backed out and stripped itself from all the vibrations. fixed all that and 2 days later what seems to be a new trend in my life(you'll find out later why i said that) but driving home from a friends house i smell the firey gross smell on the highway but thought nothing of it. im a few blocks away from home and finally come to a stop at the light. the smell decides to show its face and what i think is a glare from my glasses and the street lights is actually light smoke radiating through the cracks of the hood. i turn my car off, pop the hood and see smoke coming from the engine bay. i make make my way towards to passenger side and im shocked to see that theres a fire. -__- i took my shirt off, tried putting it out and as the wind is redirecting the flames towards the fuel filter. 2 seconds later, smoke goes out, the car wont start so i push the car home and disconnect the battery. next morning i go to re-examine the situation and find this.

the clamp broke off and must have been making contact with other wires.

i was tired of getting pulled over every single day for my apexi n1 so opted to sell it to go with a low profile megan type 2 exhaust which worked out very well(past tense)

now why i said past tense.. never buying crappy parts again. 2 months worth of usage and sick of these solid mounts breaking everything, i sold the mounts, rewelded this shitty exhaust sold it and bought my old apexi n1 back from the guy i sold to. lucky for me the guy never mounted the exhaust on his car and his s13 got stolen, so i bought it back cheaper then what i sold it to him for! score :]

finally i got a much better job work a block away from a local diner. he knew i was into cars and his brother in law has a 240 with a built sr so we had a brief conversation how my project isnt going anywhere due to making crappy money. he offered me to work for him, i said yes, the money was rolling in nicely and i was finally making some decent money!

now its time to have fun :]

this build is up to date as far as april 2011. when i come back from work im going to continue to update where the build has gone from then till as far as today and what will be going down this weekend. hopefully you guys are enjoying this build from where it all began, to the state that the car is(as far as inside this build thread) to what i have done since april and the direction im aiming for 2012

Haha thanks. A few weeks later I got a mint fender and sent it to maaco to get painted. It only lasted being clean till about a month ago. Bmw x5 cutting me off plus stock brakes = the fender looking exactly the same like when the wheel flew off lol. I massaged the dent out and it looks pretty good except for a minature dimple but whatever, that's life of a daily driven car

Thanks but the build is more or less complete, I got billions of more parts and pics to share when I get back home. I just posted this so I could atleast store it somewhere. No disrespect but when they say incomplete build threads aren't allowed, it means that builds that start and never check back to the site to update. There are plenty of threads on here that are far from complete but are constantly updated which I'm going to do. The main focus of this thread is to show how the beginnings of how this build has come to be, where its currently at and what's in store for 2012 which I will be sharing with everyone through this thread. I promise you this thread won't disapoint :)

Lol you mean I WAS in the same boat as you but don't stop dreaming. Time and paitence is a virtue. A lot has changed since april and I'm excited to post what's been done since but I'm at work and all the pics are on my computer. Ill be updating once I get home in a few hours

Kind of sounds like what Im going through, I sold my prelude to get my s14 when I was 17, turboed ka, dented oil pan = blown motor, went through so much shit, from getting tboned to blowing turboes from shitty mechanic fuck ups. Now after 8 months my car is still not running, but hopefully emance can tune my car next week! Good job with this build, its nice seeing a build that is not rediculously baller and makes me feel poor lol

thanks guys, this is EXACTLY why i wanted to put this up and i should have done this a long time ago but i never thought i would have got it to the magnitude that it has now and i didn't wanna be another build ditcher. of course we love those where people build the cars we wish we could but we only have them put together in our heads of how we want our car to one day be.. and it honestly sucks. if you will it, it'll happen. maybe not overnight but eventually it'll happen. you just need a strict game plan of how and when you want things done.. and you might suprise yourself with what youve done in between to get there which is what i guess will set my thread apart from the other builds on here. with how my red s13 was, the stuff ive done to my black s13 now seemed more of a fantasy than anything else.. but as promised the updates are coming shortly. sit tight lol

so yeah back to the story. the megan exhaust was a complete piece of shit, the hangers ripped right off and all the supporting brackets fell off to. i cut my losses, repaired it, sold it and got my apexi n1 back. good for me is that i got the same exact one back cheaper then what i sold it to the dude for.. bad news is that he never got to mount the exhaust and never would have because his car got stolen

decided to keep the spirit of my red hatch somewhat alive and keep the sparco steering wheel, the nismo shifter, the "drift" knob and my old radio :]

after that i finally figured its time to part with these wheels. they just werent cutting it anymore. around march early april, NOBODY had these yet and for the price i wasnt complaining. so i picked up a set of 527's and mounted em on

and so the summer came. it was pretty awesome finishing up classes, being able to actually enjoy the car for once. meets meets and more meets, far and wide, i wasnt worried about whether or not i would make it.

back when i first starting hearing "y0 s0N! wH3r'd yU g3t d0$3 r!M$z!" or "wtf ive been waiting since october for mine to be shipped to me and its practically june!"

and so for the month of may, not much had went on.. i was making pretty good money and i was just saving up. only modifications where front and rear strut bars and a gt spec strut bar. i was too busy just having fun and driving the car!

after 2.5 months of having the n1 exhaust back i had already had 4 pending exhaust tickets for that thing.. i finally sold it for good this time, ran over to my friends house and picked this up for the same price i sold my n1 for. i have nothing but good things to say about this exhaust. ive still yet to get pulled over for this exhaust.. its super d00per quiet and def low profile. my thing is if you can manuever in nyc with this then your guarenteed to get by with this anywhere. i swear you can probably getting a ticket for breathing to loud out here smfh.

back to enjoying the car again, driving this car everywhere with my spunky little ka, no cares no worries just having fun

and so for the month of may, not much had went on.. i was making pretty good money and i was just saving up. only modifications where front and rear strut bars and a gt spec trunk brace. i was too busy just having fun and driving the car!

after 2.5 months of having the n1 exhaust back i had already had 4 pending exhaust tickets for that thing.. i finally sold it for good this time, ran over to my friends house and picked this up for the same price i sold my n1 for. i have nothing but good things to say about this exhaust. ive still yet to get pulled over for this exhaust.. its super d00per quiet and def low profile. my thing is if you can manuever in nyc with this then your guarenteed to get by with this anywhere. i swear you can probably getting a ticket for breathing to loud out here smfh.

And then came east coast bash.. finally got to witness a first hand event go down like that was crazy! So many cars, different group levels of drivers, the tire smoke and shards hitting your face.. it was awesome and then from there my little drifter phanb0i in me came out. i wanted to dreaaafffttt... but whats dreaaftting?(dumb redneck from tokyo drift voice)

but anyway.. i have quite a few friends that have done club loose events and slide from time to time.. and honestly i dont see why people put car together and dont use em to do what theyre supposted to do. im not saying that all s13's are meant to "drift" but if your gonna install parts on your car.. make use of em. im sure im not the only one that feels that way.

in the mean time, stock piling cash away, during the month of june i was saving up to go ka-t. why? well 1. my motor only had about 14k on it since its been in my red s13 2. it had arp headstuds 3. it was solid, didnt leak anything and ran more then strong.. so wtf not boost it.

in the meantime my friend was welding a diff he had laying around for free and then i got this. i picked it up from leg1t for cheap since he was doing one of those bn style ferrari hatches. i opted not to put it on till whenever i get kouki tail lights just because usdm lights+wing = nfs shift.. and i think that shit looks stupid

with some practice time in with a few weeks left before club loose night moves and since i had yet to get one since installing coilovers, all those arms, sway bars and bracing.. i could def. improve by actually getting an alignment done.

so time for another rather long update starting from july 27th. hopefully i can post up as much as i can today.

So.. club loose night moves. $40.. drift all night? little did i know how this was going to be a reeeeallllllllllll long night. in the beginning everything was cool. thankfully it was a small turn out so i got a bunch of runs in. every run i learned something new and got to understand how this whole drift on dry land with a underpowered car really feels. ofcourse i would either go in too slow or enter too late so obviously mistakes were made. spinouts, eating rocks, cones, tire shards.. the whole ordeal. finally as i start to get comfortable with the car c class was over with and b and a class had a joined group since it was a small turn out. so i watched, observed other techniques for a few hours, got to talk to some people and make some suspension adjustments.. it was awesome. finally c group was ready to go and i was pumped.. ready to drive hard and put what i saw into action.

and this was the only picture i had all night of the car. and my friend dave in the back with the cress who welded my diff wound up breaking his welded diff somehow lol

so back to drifting. finally getting the hang of this, entering 3rd hard finally getting to slide the first turn atleast half way(this shit is looong), i would straighten out and just link the third and final turn and i was happy with that. after my 6th run i come back to the line up, and as i wait.. once again the night lights are shining pretty bright, reflecting off my hood and making my glasses hazy and blurry.. thought nothing of it and as im told to go i smell something. ignoring whatever smell it was, i dumped the clutch topping out the gears into 3rd as i approach the first turn. as im driving i can feel that this time around the car feels like its running out of steam and feels a lot less responsive then out of the 20+ runs i got in today.. but not giving a fuck im determined to clear this first turn with this ka. going in faster then all my other runs, quick flip of the e brake and clutch kick i begin to slide.. approaching more then half the turn i feel alot of momentum is lost and down shift into 2nd to keep it going. as i begin to exit out to slide to shortly begin the next turn i hear a distinctive noise that basically means to me, "i hope you enjoyed your wallet because im about to take everything from it." where i should have clutch kicked is where im actually screaming to myself in the car, "FUUUUCKKKKKKK!!!"

My KA24DEAD is now that HAD 14k on it was knocking like a mofo and im choking in smoke.. and is def not tire smoke -__-

So i quickly pull into the pits turn the car off and my friends are running over to me asking me wtf happened. smoke is entering through the top vents on the dash somehow and light smoke is seeping from any opening under the hood. as people are using there flash lights to view the smoke entering the interior thinking wtf is that happening, i pop the hood to see the catastrophe of what was a perfectly good motor the day before.. i now open my hood to see that opening my hood just contributed to my car becoming more on fire then what it already was. in the split second of me being like O_O!!!!!!!!! 4 other guys had already ran into their car.. grabbed fire extinguishers and put out the fire from under the hood and inside my interior. the header is glowing pink and the 10w-40 oil i changed the day before was thinner then water and 50x slicker then astro glide. we all wait a few minutes for all to clear and turn the car back on again... once again forced to hear what i took time and patience to make sure this thing was reliable, was knocking.

with a little over an hour, one of the local club loose dudes will had a shop nearby knew that towing my car from englishtown would have wiped all my money away.. offered to help tow my car to his shop to see further perform an autopsy and see what went wrong. so in the mean time, will an i rushed over to get the tow immidiatly so my car doesnt get locked in the lot over night and i dont get stuck paying a holding fee. and while we were gone, negrosx13 and a couple of friends helped pushed my torched s13 out of the lot. we finally get back to the track around 11:15.. the track had been closed since 10 and my friends were stuck waiting in the pitch black with hazards on waiting for us to come back. distraught, upset, angry and broke.. we set up planks.. removed the lip and got it up on the tow and we had another 45 min trip to bring the car to wills shop.

unfortunately i had no pictures during this time all all this because it was so pitch black and couldnt get ANY decent pictures. it was shoved on the side of the grass against a guard rail with the hazards on and fire extinguisher residue caked all on the car. if you watched the initial d episode where takumi blows his motor against that evo III.. just replace that exact scene but with my s13. it was scripted no better then that. and just like takumi, the whole ride back in the tow truck.. i knew that i wanted to come back stronger, quicker and better then ever. i wound up getting home at 2 in the morning that night and not seeing the car for a few days, i had some time to reflect, think about the direction that this car was going to take. the most important factor of this all was time. i had no car and school was starting right back up august 26th

and thats what ill leave you with now till i update later and you guys will see what went down for the crazy hectic month of august (with less reading and more pics lol)

Alright, about a week passes and im ready to tow the car back home from nowhereville nj back to staten island. autopsy revealed failed oil pump and compression numbers of 130,105,40,90 on all 4 cylinders. steering rack bushing is torn to shreds and my steering rack was off center by more than an inch and a half and passenger front coilover is oozing.

last but not least this is what caused the fire. a rust hole that was not there when i purchased the car, and since the header was so flush the floor of the car the sound deadening caught fire and burnt some of the carpet.

next order of business is i have 3 weeks and counting to source a motor, get it in, trouble shoot and be ready for school.. so glad the week before i didnt pick up a nardi wheel and bucket seat. and DRUMMROOOOOLLLLLL!! .. engine of choice will be... -akward pause- a ka-t t25 setup! i figured the only way to go is up and finished what i intended to start

my good buddy 180sxdrifter had a spare back up long block with 100k on it and since he knew my situation he hooked it up for $20(+billions of dollars of tolls & gas) he reccomended to be safe was change the head gasket but other then that the motor was pretty clean internally. so i brought it home, scrubbed off the block and started piecing together a kit. for another 100 he gave me his intercooler kit and i got a free type s knock off bov from a friend since the intercooler had a greddy flange on it.

from there the following day i ordered a full gasket kit for the motor, lines for the turbo, water pump, thermostat, isis v2 manifold, and all misc. gaskets for the turbo. later during the day i met up with another friend to pick up a t25 with inlet and outlet pipes attached. basically all what was pending was a tapped oil pan which my friend will had laying around at his shop... just a matter of the waiting game.

i met up with another set of friends at my house and my one friend carl (had ride of the month in import tuner about a yr ago for his grey s13) was talking to me about some nonsense car stuff and how the car caught on fire.. yadadyadayda.. stupid stuff.. and a few minutes later he had just blurted out.. "damn man i wish i had my s13.. im about to build another right now.. this kid (forgot his name) is selling a complete turn key swap for 1000 bucks!"

quickly asked who and the kid wound up living 10 minutes from me and i had no idea this kid existed! quickly got his phone and told him ill pick it up first thing in the morning. it was obv a s13 sr blacktop with apparently 50k from the importer(yeah bullshit) and he put another 15k on it before his strut towers collpased when he was driving. he wound up parting the car except for the swap and was planning on keeping it for another car. a year and half passed by, the motor sat and he was building a mustang instead.

with the motor i got all the accessories, ecu, harness already wired for a 90(sweet), brand new oem water pump, brand spanking new exedy stage one clutch with less than 200 miles on it, trans, aftermarket elbow, downpipe and test pipe. i canceled my payment for the ka-t stuff and scooped it up.

i wasted no time. for the first time in forever i had absolutely $0 in my pocket so before i could do anything i had to make some money. i parted the ka quickly to my suprise. i sold the long block, radiator, header, 3 ecu's, harness, trans, and my beloved purple valve cover.. which recently was part of another blown ka lol. now that i had some money to comfortably play with, i stripped the block down to make sure this motor was true to what he said about. turns out he was correct, no signs of oil neglect, waterpump was new, turbo was in good shape and the clutch was brand new. the only thing that took some time to confirm was the wiring harness. i never wired up a sr harness so i made sure everything was done correct and traced everything back to where it was. no crappy connections, all looks good here. except for this obnoxiously long maf cable that ill trim after the motor is in the car running good( thats gonna come back to haunt me)

just because i have 3 weeks to put this motor in doesnt mean im going to half ass and cut corners. i like to take some pride in what i do. at the time i wish i had funds to stitch weld the bay and reshoot but i didnt, so sadly it has to go back in the same bay but i cleaned up all the extinguisher residue and oil and other gunk that built up over the months.

the goal was to put the sr in but have it look like nothing ever happened. so just like the ka, i resprayed everything and made sure everything was clean again

THIS DAY SUCKED ASS. i had a tarp over this motor and there was so much weight on the tarp it fell over and all the coil pack covers were unconvered.. the valve cover wasnt tightened and all the spark plug holes over filled with water and spilled out into the head. basically i was sucking oil and water out of the sr head with a straw for over 20 mins.. and then there was light! back to business. reassembled everything back together.. hoist is working good and in we go! shortly after this was in my friend came with a spare valve cover to slap on while mine got sent off to powdercoat from my friend.

unfortunately with time being a factor and hurricane irene on its way, getting this car up and running was a big priority. apparently nyc was going to get hit really bad and at negrosx13's house, he has this sketchy ass garage that looks like it leans over more and more each day. that plus all the shit we had laying around wasnt a good look. piece by piece the ka was down to the bare acessories(still got a ka starter and injectors if anyone needs)

-first problem was the neutral safety switch needed to be rewired because it was getting crappy connection
-vacuum leaks
-throwing out mounds and mounds of black smoke(eventually went away and im gonna assume from sitting for over a year with no turning over that would happen)
-breaking up like holy hell once we got it running
-needed to be retimed and waiting for 240sxmotoring to send me a valve cover gasket before this hurricane got here.
-the civic battery i thought was going to fit under the hood wound up not fitting. -_- i was on my last 40 bucks and i had no money for a relocation kit

-the harness was originally wired for a single cam maf and it was acting up.
-the breaking up was was caused by the shitty thermostat that was stuck open. i would go drive the car and the second it got into boost the car would get ice cold and start bogging. new thermostat and got that fixed.

hurricane irene was coming saturday so thurs night the vac leaks got sorted out. the valve cover gasket is on, the shitty ebay bov i got free for free worked after some adjustment and we re timed the motor from scratch with the timing light so all i needed to do was pick up the mess in the yard and drive my car 15 mins back to my place. seems like a simple task.

friday was my first day of school. yeah i wanted to get the car before school started but shit happens and life doesnt always go according to plan. i took the bus to school only to find out my class was canceled. so fucking pissed but whatever, more time to pack up all my shit and bring my car home.

all is good till right before im about to hit the highway. the cars running excellent and i hit a slight bump.. the car starts to bog and shuts off.

OK... wtf now.. not cool. tried to crank but nothing. i smell smoke in the interior and already start freaking out. im sick of shit catching on fire lol. first thing i do is run to the hood but i see no smoke. i look all around to find my problem staring at me right in front of my face. the obxnoxious single cam maf wire that i said i was going to re-wire once i got the car fully done fell from its original location of where it was tucked away.. wound up falling right on top of the exhaust manifold and burning the wires together. i put 2 and 2 together and realize the smell of smoke from the interior was from the ecu burning out.

stuck on the side of the road before the highway thinking of what to do, i pop the box open to see exactly what was burnt. one of the long strips on the computer are completely burnt. i started unraveling the maf wire to trace exact where the power and ground both touched. i wound up cutting old tape from the harness and re using to seperate the two. tried to start it up again only to see the burnt strip just burn off some more. with the hurricane already on its way, my car in the ghetto where it should be parked inside the garage at my house, i called my friend damien to see when he gets out of work to see if he can help push my car home. of course a natrual reaction is for someone to ask what happen. if you met this kid first hand you would think hes the weirdest kid ever and says some of the weirdest shit ever. his routine weird response wound up being to my benefit. he goes "ohhh shiiiiitttt.. you know what time it is?" "its paper clip time!! it happened to me imma send a pic of what to do" and then he hangs up. waiting 30 mins for him to send me a damn picture text i get it finally and its a pic of the exact burnt strip i have and he jumped the burnt strip with the paper clip to join the circuit. he told me the put the key into 2, put the paper clip like so and start the car.. 2 cranks later, the car started O_o??

by this time its rush hour, everyones trying to get home and ditch this storm and in stand still traffic the car hesitates and shuts off. after i jumped the ecu the car still ran like shit and was bogging and did not sound happy. 4 cranks later and cleared up traffic, the car starts and got it home.

negro came shortly after to see that i got home good and check the ecu. with the ecu the car ran a bit better but seem not to be firing completely right. troubleshooting declared that i wound up roasting injectors number 2 and 3 and they needed to be changed. running out of time and crappy weather coming i put the car away.

the hurricane was bad but not AS bad as people made it seem.. and i was bored and impatient, so i went into the garage and started changing the injectors.

i started the car up and it sounded alot better than the day before but it was still somewhat choppy. negro came over the next and i borrowed his ecu and the car was crisp. being broke, i got some nice wire and soldered the two connections. started the car up but it just wasnt the same.. ofcourse it was better then before but the damage was done and the computer was shot. last resort i asked my mom and ofcourse i had to hear the bitching of blahblah "if u didnt go drifting then youd still have a running car and your problem becomes everybody elses problem." clearly she didnt understand that my motor was beat and dead anyway if it died so quickly at the track.. atleast my dad understood that and lent me the cash as long as i got it back to him by the end of the week.

no local ecu's anywhere so i went to jdm engine world in queens and they were cool enough to part one of the ecus from the front clips. i never went to a place like this before and i felt like i was in jdm wonderland.. just fantasizing about all these engine and wondering what the cars looked like that they came out of.. im sure im not the only person that does that! shit like that just fasinates me.. and so i took some pics.

ran back to staten island and paid the normal $3857304897548975 toll, pluged the ecu in, retimed the motor again and all was good! finally a running swap. i did the battery relocation kit and trimmed the bumper for the fmic.

anyways like i said this harness is cool. super clean and has the option for the sohc or dohc dash plug so if u ever swap chassis u can still use and it came with different maf options so lets say i wanna run a n60 maf it comes with a connector for that or z32.. yadayada enough with the bs and more pichas!

car is running alive, well and quiet.. did all routine maintenance on it. only "mod" at the time was installing a hallman v2 mbc. it holds good boost and doesnt spike or any of that nonsense.

picked these up from 90hatchie for 350 with the lower garnish and already wired up

update time, its finals week so ive been a tad busy.. enough with the excuses and gather round for story/pictor time!

so yeah, the xxr's were sold and i was riding around with the coilovers raised all the way for a while, it was actually fun since i didnt need to dodge anything and the car was soft. the main reason i sold the wheels was because my friend had his works which he was planning to sell so i was going to get them but obv im 4 lug. so i was in search for just a simple 5 lug conversion and just get s14 5 lug rotors blahblah. wound up finding a set for cheap and someone else wound up sending a payment 30 seconds before i did. so stuck for lik3 4 days without funds i found a complete 5 lug conversion with front and rear z brakes with drilled and slotted rotors for 350. awesome deal and a few days later i got em.

Those look more like R32 GTR non V-Spec calipers (they fit 32mm wide rotors) so I'm not sure R33 GTS-T rotors would work.

R33 GTS-T rotors definitely aren't the same as Z32, they're 296mm in diameter.

All this is in the event you ever need to find replacement rotors.

so lately the car has been doing its normal dd'ing activites, school is done for a few weeks so i picked up more hours at work delivering so ive been pretty dependent on the car and if worst comes to worst i could just use my parents car but the cars been good to me, other then the car not starting every couple of days which im really want to figure out soon. im sick of charging the car every morning and then it runs completely fine afterwards.. mystery mobile.

well as far as the car goes, my friends have been wanting me to go out with them more and get some more seat time. im def. getting alot more comfortable with sliding the car and transitioning weight and all. but all good things come to an end

replaced as a temp. with tein tie rods and installed my pbm angle spacers. a def big improvement but i went want to get some kind of adjustable outer tie to adjust the roll center. btw this side of my car is becoming more plagued by the day. its like rotting and cracking everywhere.. the rest of the car is spotless though -__-

next order of business is too much slamslam. my hoods been acting funny for the past week and a half and finally figured it out.. the hood latch wire has been rubbing and ripping apart, resulting in the hood barely opening.

another reason which got me to change this thing is because my turn signals stopped working the other day and assumed that if my hood latch wire was rubbing, then my harness is rubbing. which it was. i temporarily fixed it at negrosx13's house after it happened.. checked the signals, worked good and then when i put the fender back on it stopped working again.. w t f. so i finally had a day off and decided lets get this thing straightened out.

6 wires were messed up on this side. made sure i color matched, soldered and heat shrinked all bad connections.

everything worked again, signals, hazards etc. but next issue i was having the previous night is that the alarm was going off for no reason, after like 15 seconds of enabling the alarm. after disabling i went to start the car, it would crank and but just crank till the battery died.. normally like what it does during the morning. so as usual i threw it on the charger for 10 mins.. cranks but doesnt turn over. the car is getting fuel but no spark. so im guessing the alarm is disengaging it from getting spark. so i left it the next day. same shit the next morning, it cranks till it dies, charge it.. after playing the alarm, arming and disarming for a few mins.. the car runs but it runs for maybe like 2 seconds. figured fuck it, let me unplug all the alarm accesories and see whats up. i couldnt even find the box but after scrambling and searching, i have this rats nest. some of it is a couple of gauges but this is some janky sketchy wiring.

im about to call the guy up and just tell him to remove all this sketchy ass wiring and ill go elsewhere who actually knows how to mess with this car and install it.

after unplugging that crap, i got the car to start but under one condition. it cranks and doesnt die.. BUT if i start the car in flood mode it starts up, runs choppy for a few secs but then idles and drives normal. took it around the block and drove good. i turn it off after driving it, crank it back up and starts right up. but now if i leave it off for like 20 mins it wont start unless i start it in flood mode. weird shit. hopefully i get to it tomorrow. also im not a fan of this freddy bov and this intercooler setup. i want to run something recirculated. until i get the 2871r im just gonna run the smic my friend has from his front clip 8 years ago with the stock bypass valve and all. i think itll look pretty cool and return more to a stock state. curious to see how this car runs with a stock smic as opposted to a slight larger fmic on a completely bone stock sr with the except of a hks filter and mbc.

also i will be installing this since my friend just got the consult software for nissans on his laptop. no more trouble shooting issues by eye and ear. since my cars a 90.. i took the consult plug from my friend koukisandsomeappleuice's 91 part out car and wire it up on the ecu side.

I'm loving this, this thread reminds me of when I was 16 with no job, and a blown sohc. I'm on my 4th 240sx with a red top, and misc parts, coils coming in this week. Keep updating, I'll post a build thread some time soon, I need to get with the times and get a iphone or camera... HAHA.

I know :/ I have absolutely no money attm because I still need to pay another 1000 for my reckless past in the next month and a half. I need to give back these tie rods this week, I still need an alignment too before I get brand new tires. Which leads to my next question if anyone wants to help out.

Specs on the fronts are 17x8.5+5 with a 215/45 with -5 degrees of camber. Should I run a
205/40 and atleast a 10mm or 15mm spacer up front and look a little better or stick with the 215/45 and get a 10mm. Ill post pics in a tad

Just read the whole build, start to finish... Love it. You capture all the lows and highs of driving a car like this. Alot of us have faced the "rust" demon, and alot of us remember that thrill of the first time racing, and the feeling of blowing up your first motor. Your story captures the whole experience, and with a great, positive attitude. Your always thinking forward, saying "it can only get better" and things like that. That's the right attitude. That's why everyone loves this build. You built a car you love, and you didn't half ass it. You admit your mistakes, you have realistic goals, n u don typ lik dis. replaced as a temp. with tein tie rods and installed my pbm angle spacers. a def big improvement but i went want to get some kind of adjustable outer tie to adjust the roll center.

check out the circuit sports inner and outer tie rods. they're roll center adjustable. thats what i got and they're super awesome. also I've seen some people say on fb and stuff that you should get a d max or koguchi hood. if you don't have all the $$ for that. check out 9kracing.com they have hood vents almost identical for sale there and they're only lie $100. thats what I'm gonna go with. good luck, love the progress and whole story! subscribed to it!

first off, thanks for the support guys it keeps me going. but well after a few days of driving, the teins are messed up aswell. i should be replacing the rack in a few weeks also. as far as the circuit sports stuff goes, i really dont want to cheap out nor have i heard awesome reviews on them anyway. as of right still have my mind set on z32 inners/spl outers especially with this ride height and where i live i need something thats going to handle the abuse.

so i finally decided to raise the front. it was for the best. as u can see this is the only plagued part of my car that i want to get fix hopefully within a week or 2.

this look is amazing, I love it when kouki fronts have both position and turn signal lights.

keep up the awesome work, my only suggestion for rust repair is to use weld thru primer when you start welding, and take your time so nothing warps. have the car as level as you can with multiple jacks so after the cuts the car has no chance of sagging. I just went through all that ( not as bad but still had to be done ) and it is a bit of a chore, but so well worth it in the end.

also por15 it when you are done and follow up with rubber undercoat or rock guard

You should lower the back more flush with rim lip or tuck the lip a little and you can go lower in the front without it hitting as much. When your fender has same gap front and back, the front ends up being lower. Imo..

Digging the dedication to this build but that chassis needs to go! You have rot in some pretty crucial structural points. If you plan on drifting this thing again seriously your going to need to ditch that shell or bust out the welder and do some serious repairs. Especially with how much you seem to be scraping, your frame rails are only going to get worse.

i know this rust issue is scary as shit but the front suspension is completely shot.. ive managed to kill brand new federals in like 3 weeks already. between books for school, bills, my 600 driver assesment fee for being stupid is all holding me back from getting alot of things done and it sucks because i have no option but to drive it.

finally decided to get an alignment even my ball joints, wheel bearings and steering rack are shot. thankfully i have 60 days on my warranty to fix all this before i get my alignment so might as well.

only con i have is this rail after i bought it i realized is bottom mount and my seat is a sidemount.. so i hadda make brackets. no biggie.

the brackets are pretty tough.. just drilled some holes so it reclined slightly.. other then that everything was spot on.. just about an hour of measuring, cutting and making sure this would work first try.

update time(well not really)

the cars felt like shit for the past month in a half and i havent had much funds to fix it as i just finished paying the last 700 bucks on my lisc after 3 years so im finally clean. the cars been sluggish and my wideband hasnt worked anyway. the car was struggling even to reach 6k on 12 psi.

what was done was to see if any issues cleared up

ohmed injectors ranging from 11.2-11.5
ngk7's gapped at 32
new fuel filter
turbo outlet gasket, dp 3 bolt gasket, exhaust gaskets all around
welded all cracks on the elbow,dp, and exhaust
2 bolts were missing off the elbow so that issues resolved
new sensor for my wideband

still sluggish, afr's in w.o.t reading as high as 16.8, idle is 13.4 and cruising anywhere from 13-15

checked the voltage on the walbro thats not even 10 months old and its reading at idle about 11 volts and as boost is increasing and im getting on the car its hitting as low as 10.2 volts. is this pump fried already?

to see if this would clear it up i temporarily hardwired the pump and at idle the pump was reading about 13.9 volts and now when i boost the car feels insane now. at idle and cruising the afrs remain the same but on w.o.t. the lowest i got was 12.9-13.4 and im assuming thats still a bit too lean right? should i just wire this pump directly anyway and buy a new pump? also what about a fuel pressure regulator like the nismo? this whole boost thing is still new to me so any input would be greatly appriciated.

also i finally got new hubs with good wheel bearings to install during the weekend and hopefully have the steering rack rebuilt as well as hardwiring this pump.

to make matters worse.. what i thought was a bump was really me running over my kouki sideskirt on the highway. -__- if anyone is selling JUST that piece please lmk. im not trying to spend another 400 on a pair of skirts + paint

i believe this is the before.. those numbers are so outta wack. i know in the after sheet i was running 8 degrees of caster, -3.5 camber all around and the toe and thrust angle is all set to the center where that green dash is. ill see if i can find it and post it

in progress update i guess:

ive noticed myself missing gears when i shift that i rarely do which i found strange. it seems like as the weeks go on its just been getting worse. i thought it wals my imagination till i realized theres no clutch fluid in the master cylinder.. no biggie.. refilled it, went a few weeks and same thing. i figured the slave was bad, bled it.. same shit. the car would launch perfectly fine but by the time i get to 4th gear i have absolutely no pedal to disengage.
fed up and tired of the bullshit i figured id down the car for the next month or so. im pretty behind on bills to due certain circumstances and it seems like the headaches keep piling on. aside from that cmc being bad, i have a terrible wobble from the amount of playing in my front hubs, steering my car is like trying to rotate a 40 inch tv in your hand. the pump is fine but the rack is just mangeled. my afr's are also a bit too high from my liking.. it could just be an exhaust leak still from my elbow by im hitting anywhere from 12.2-12.6. im just gonna be smart and get my ecu tuned and fixed the gaskets. brakes are getting spongy too, the bmc is leaking, so that needs to go. and lastly im sick of having no e brake! i need 2+2 cables and the bracket.

id actually like to enjoy this car this summer, be reliable and actually get to do some events and not come back on a tow truck on fire :]

Is all your rust on the drivers side?? Betting that all that leaky clutch/brake aided in that. It's amazing what you've pushed through and not given up, I gave up after half a year and i sold mine over an injector dying....keep it up man.

some progress today. cleaned up my friends steering rack that wasnt messed up and some parts came in.
new clutch master since the one i have was leaking, as well as a z32 bmc and tie rod boots that wont be ripped and leak everywhere.

this bmc had a alley key bolt in the middle of the 3 ports so i took it out so it can accomodate the rear brake line.

in progress update i guess:

ive noticed myself missing gears when i shift that i rarely do which i found strange. it seems like as the weeks go on its just been getting worse. i thought it wals my imagination till i realized theres no clutch fluid in the master cylinder.. no biggie.. refilled it, went a few weeks and same thing. i figured the slave was bad, bled it.. same shit. the car would launch perfectly fine but by the time i get to 4th gear i have absolutely no pedal to disengage.
fed up and tired of the bullshit i figured id down the car for the next month or so. im pretty behind on bills to due certain circumstances and it seems like the headaches keep piling on. aside from that cmc being bad, i have a terrible wobble from the amount of playing in my front hubs, steering my car is like trying to rotate a 40 inch tv in your hand. the pump is fine but the rack is just mangeled. my afr's are also a bit too high from my liking.. it could just be an exhaust leak still from my elbow by im hitting anywhere from 12.2-12.6. im just gonna be smart and get my ecu tuned and fixed the gaskets. brakes are getting spongy too, the bmc is leaking, so that needs to go. and lastly im sick of having no e brake! i need 2+2 cables and the bracket.

id actually like to enjoy this car this summer, be reliable and actually get to do some events and not come back on a tow truck on fire :]

The bumpers ok but I just wanna start fresh again. The lip is mangeled too which I'm honestly most upset because it will take centuries to find another frp lip or oem.

Everything happens for a reason though. I'm gonna come back crazy and better then ever. The motors coming out next week and all rust and everything else will be taken care of

"update"

prior to the crash everythings been perfect with the car. hit up a few events, slid the car at night with some friends just about 3 times a week for a few hours, no issues starting or breaking down or anything.
finally got to take a trip down to ocean city maryland with a few of my friends and oh man that place was fun! 5 hour drive, and breaking down on the way -__- the one bump i hit in like deleware i noticed my car decelerating and the wideband reading super lean, the car coasted to a dead stop. long story short, over looked everything and it wound up being my luggage pinching my fuel pump hardwire shorting out and blowing the fuel pump fuse. wound up putting my luggage in my friends car, changing the fuse and being headache free :]

i know trust me it kills me to know thats there and when i first bought the car none of that was visible. the motor was out twice already and those holes were not there. but to answer your question the cmc had a leak and for some reason even still.. the brake lines are leaking and i dont know why. im gonna change them and see what happens though.

not having money to start anything this summer is killing me. i sold the coilovers and bumper and picked up a daily but thats been a nightmare too. i wound up getting a 02 chevy malibu. 2 days after getting it the starter went, and two days after i went to get gas and the thing wouldn't come on. i had to leave it at that gas station and just let those people check it out. the following day i got a phone call to check out the car and the camshaft sensor wound up failing. so im at about 1600 bucks with this car when i felt like i coulda just slapped my car back together.
but paitence is a virtue and i know itll be worth it in the long run when i get this car properly assembled. so far since ive had no money i have done nothing other then just look at the car in pure disapointment lol. i made a full list of everything that needs to be done and im setting a 5k budget excluding paint but we will see.
im hoping to start purchasing some stuff soon. i got a 2nd job i should be starting in 2 weeks so hopefully the money starts to roll in so i dont gotta be so cheap and live comfortably. ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

broke but the build isn't abandoned. alot of other priorities have made themselves known. its kinda frustrating because its been a few months with little to no progress but thats how life goes. just take it how it comes and when the opportunity comes just try to take advantage which is what i've been doing.

i figured id start with the rear of the car. i dont wanna keep jumping from spot to spot on the car. im currently installing energy suspension bushings for the rlca and rear spindles, and definately trying to have a functional z32 ebrake setup with project mu pads. im hoping to have the rear done by october.

Something is leaking/basting on the frame man...if I were you I would find another DD and put in some serious surgery time on the frame.

Also another vote to keeping it, but this corrective maintenance is a uphill battle!

i did lol. which is why theres been barely any updates. i bought a dd, hadda put some maintence into it and some. but the moneys slowly building and ive been putting some more attention to the car :]
