Okay, I used the search option first before I posted this thread so please, don't flame me that badly. On to subject, so there's this clicking noise right? It's been going on since LAST FRIDAY on the 12 of DEC. I haven't been driving my car a lot since then. Right when I turn the ignition, it takes a split second longer than it would normally. Then there's this loud ass clicking, later muffled in another split second. Funny thing is, inside, it doesn't sound that bad, from inside you could hella hear it. When I drive, after 2000rpm the clicking gets MORE worse. This morning I parked my car from the driveway into the garage and then I turn off my car and see smoke from the rear. Color: white. Smells a bit like burning oil. When I put my pedal on the clutch, it vibrates. Can't really figure this one out, I was thinking it was an exhaust leak, or maybe my lifters/rocker arms. I've asked a couple of people around and they couldn't really give me an accurate answer. My car was supposably low on oil and louder when I checked, and then I changed it which made the clicking a little toned down. Oil had only about 2,500 miles on it, and I change my oil every 3,000. Anyone think they could help me out on this one? I'm not planning on doing an engine swap anytime soon because you knoe, it's the holidays. If anyone has any REAL advice please, GIVE ME YOUR KNOWLEDGE and THOUGHTS!

I think you have the KA24E, the only experience I have with this motor was back when I owned a 93 Nissan pickup. It had lots of guts on the bottom, hated to rev, and was almost as fast as my 1984 300zx..lol. Anyway when i did thrash on it, which was like everyday it used to make this light clicking/tapping noise and one day I drove it real hard and the noise got really loud!!!! I took my oil fill cap off and it seemed like it had enough blow by to act as a hair dryer!
I remedied this problem with one small quart of Marvel Mystery oil, and I know there people who frown upon this kind of maintenance. Hey it worked! As a matter of fact I always replace one quart of oil for one quart of Marvel when i change my oil in my KA24DE she has 60,000 miles on her and still going strong!
The white smoke worries me? Was it cold in the morning when you started it? If it was a bad headgasket you would pretty much know, huge loss in power, trail of white smoke behind you while going down the road, and you can smell it!
Find somone with a stethescope so you can hear where exactly the noise is coming from! If its under the valve cover from the sounds of things, run the marvel. Sounds like its around the head, check the exhaust manifold, couldve broken an exhaust stud and cost you a few bucks to replace!
Anyway, Good Luck!

Hopefully the white smoke isn't oil the burning in the engine. I have this feeling it's not because usually the smoke from the oil coming out from the exhaust is blue. I can sorta remember from my previous 240sx before I sold it. My check engine light finally came on, maybe I could run an ECU check or something...o well....wish me luck...

white smoke is coolant. right? u can also use a screw drive to listen, put the handle up to ur ear and the other end to where u want to listen. try that. ticking could be a timing chain.

this may help you if you find what is making the noise.

I don't know what pictures SilviaBoy posted ( I can't open bmp files) but i'm thinking they're diagrams of your valvetrain.
I'm pretty sure this clicking you're hearing, that varies with ENGINE speed, is probably your worn valvetrain not seating together properly. Does the sound lessen or go away after the engine is warmed? Probably a worn valvetrain. And so...when they come in contact, like they're supposed to be all the time, they click.
If your problem IS that you need to get in there and adjust tighted your such and such against the such and such. :p
Sorry I haven't done the job evar . I've only owned, so far, hydraulic valvetrain engines that adjust for valvetrain wear automaticly (SR)
Go get a Chilton repair manual. IIRC they have a good writeup on how to do it PLUS the book is useful for other stuff too.

Hey, Silviaboy, thanks for the nice scans of those "troubleshooting" guides, were those from the chilton's manual?

It could be a worn valvetrain, but another thing is that when I took off the valve cover, i checked if any of the lifters were loose and what not. It seemed like some of em were a bit loose. I wasn't sure if they were suppose to be like that. Like i'd lift them up and get a little bit of play, i'd say about less than a 1/8 of an inch..or less? Couldn't really tell if this was a bad sign or not. I'm not really a mechanic or anything...I just wanna get my car fixed so i could get to school.....
Check your coolant level. Check your oil level again. Make sure there is no oil in your coolant and no coolant in your oil. Warm your car up and take the oil cap off and check for air or steam coming out of the filler. White smoke from the tailpipe is usually coolant or transmission fluid...ya it happens.
You may need a valve adjustment. That's what i think the problem is.
