Okay so I want to explain beforehand, why I’m doing the build this way. The build was originally going to be done on my rhd S14.5 but do to a shop screwing me over (selling the parts off the car and sending the rest of the shell to a recycling yard even though they were supposed to be just doing the cage hah) I no longer had that car to build. The reason I had no idea that this was happening, was because back on December 7th 2010, my house burned down which had me a bit distracted from my car. Don't worry, everyone survived! it was just the house that needed to be dealt with. Also, the fire destroyed about 15k in parts that I was going to be placing on the S14.

At that point, I was basically building a car from scratch (except I already had money sent out for the new engine). I went through a long search, looking for a car, but I wanted to build on a chassis that I haven’t built yet. So, I looked for r32, S15, m3 e30, but I ended up finding a well-priced and 100% problem free 350z that I was able to pick up.


As for this car build, it is doing to be my modified class time attack car…and maybe see the street on an absolutely perfect day. NO CHEAP PARTS and NO CUT CORNERS will be done on this build. DON'T bother saying any negative comments about the engine/chassis combination. An SR is lighter than a VQ and is able to sit further back/lower in the engine bay giving it a better center of gravity along with a better 50/50 weight distribution. also, this car will not have any power issues (i will show you with some of the future updates) should have plenty of power for the car. I plan to have the car finished within a few years from the start of this thread…since there's a lot of work that needs to be done. one of the big things im trying to do with this build, is to be a bit different then everyone else. im trying to pick parts and do things to the car that most people dont do...that will possibly explain why I'm doing what im doing :) LETS GET STARTED!

KEEPING IT COOL UPDATE!

so, like i said in the first post, im going for being a bit different witht his build...trying to do things a lot of people don't do. so i decided to go with a liquid to air intercooler setup to be a bit different but to also try it out since i have never personaly tried this type of cooling before. This setup is rated for 1200hp, so im sure it will work fine.

Unfortunatly, the BW EFR 8374 is on extreme back order till who knows when...i ordered it back in April. if its not here by the end of January, I'll probably just switch to the Garret GTX series turbo... :(

stripping the Z down to nothing this week. Then next week, drilling out hundreds of spot welds to remove the engine tubbing, speaker/storage area behind the seats, and any brackets that aren't needed (glad Vince is willing to help me out with that hah)...then she leaves for Fab work (cage, stitch weld, bracing, motor/trans mounts, unboltable radiator support, bash bars, ect) (may be a break in updates till she gets back from that but hopefully not)

- all the electronics have been ordered through Touge Factory and will hopefully be here in the next couple weeks.
- driveline setup has all been ordered through Full Spec Moto.

Hello, why are you gonna use a VG trans ,instead of the VQ there is a forum member here that makes adaptor plates.

Reason I ask ,is because Im in the process of gathering parts for an SR350 also.

From my research if you stick with the VQ trans,now you dont need to make a tranny mount & you get to keep the carbon driveshaft.Plus shifter placement stays like OEM.

Z33 trans is about the same price,if not less.

i can get vg tt transmissions for 320 each...most vq transmissions are alot more (for me at least). also, i sold all the driveline stuff for the vq setup hah so im out of luck on that. Also, either way the shifter allignment would probably be off since im pushing the engine as far back and getting it as low as possible so the trans bracket also wouldn't work.

For the class im in, its not horrible. The MAIN thing is to not have more power then the car/driver can handle and to also not have to much lag on acceleration. The turbo choice is perfect and everything that has been picked for the car has been carefully thought out to make sure that we don't sacrifice any of the acceleration or handleing. The world racing TC has even more then what im going for. Also, there are actually alot of 4-cylinder cars running 600+hp in modified and unlimited class. Like I said, as long as the car/driver can handle the power and the acceleration is on point...the 700-800hp will work out just fine. Look at all the other forms of road racing and the insane power that some of them put down...its all about the car and driver being able to handle that power.

Yes. I have been doing some time attack events for awhile in my previous cars (WRX, S13, and S14) but this is a bit of a step up in many ways but i will be taking it easy on the tracks for awhile to get used to the new chassis/power/setup and to also work out any little issues in the car/tune

im not allowed to go with a full tube chassis. but, i am going with an unboltable tubular structure that will bolt up to where the radiator support bolted up and probably bolt to the strut tower area as well. it will serve as my radiator support, bash bar, bumper support, ect.

Not a HUGE problem, just a bit of a speed bump. Went to set the motor in the engine bay to see if everything cleared...it didn't hah. Intake manifold is WAY to big for a Z engine bay. We are going to have to make one that will fit. I already drew up some designs to go off of, still kind of mad though but with this engine not going in an S-chassis...i kind of expected some things to not fit right and need to be one off peices. We are going to stay with runners that are the same length, but basically come up with a whole new plenum style. Stay tuned for that!

the line on the intake manifold, would give me about 1/4" clearence between the engine and strut tower wall.

Also, all the Aero was ordered today (black friday) along with a wilwood pedal board. The aero won't be in till probably January.

That sucks about the Plenum... I have the Mazworx's proto type plenum(first VVL setup they made, was in a blue S13 hatch) going in my S14. It's about twice the size of yours... Looks like it will be a sick build, good luck man.

I will be sticking with the original runner design that Mazworx made since they probably did a bit of R/D when designing it. The plenum design that i have settled on will give me the same volume that Mazworx has, so I don't see there being a problem.

what is the length from the mounting flange to the farthest part from the motor? I'm not around the engine right now, but i believe I have about 9" between the engine and strut tower wall.

in addition, I have changed from running Mazworx z32 transmission setup to running Mazworx z33 transmission setup. Main reason for the change is that OS Giken doesn't make gears for the z32 transmission. i will have alot more updates before the month is up.

I ordered the 5spd Straight Cut Dog plus the Billet Mainshaft, I also ordered a custom fifth gear as their 0.839 is too short for me, they went to a 0.752 so I could keep the rpms down on the highway for a little bit extra.

So it was $9677.50 shipped Australian... It certainly isn't cheap, but the quality on this stuff is amazing. He offered me a 10% discount, I'm sure he can do the same for you.

Stuff that should be replaced: Bearings and seals, your transmission shop can get this. A couple items will need to be machined as well, the thrust washer, and the front cover that goes over the input shaft (forget what it's called).

There's one more thing though, the input shaft on this is a 1 1/8" 26 spline item (same as Hollinger), so you will need a clutch for that application. Luckily, Carbonetic makes a center hub for my carbon clutch just for this application for the gtr, it's on the way from Japan right now."

Well now that your going back to Z33 trans,there is another option out there depending on your budget for drivetrain are the Quaife G60(VQ specific) its bolt on for the VQ so I beleive if you reverse engineer it with the regular adaptor plates that put regular Z33 on SR. It should work in theory. HAHAHHA

nah, that tubbing shouldn't affect anything. even if it did, my cage design involves it going through the fire wall and connecting to the shock towers. also, we are doing a tubular bash bar setup front/rear and plenty of bracing with the cage and other braces that are going on the car.

hah stay in school! i work all the time though; i do construction, automotive tech, and I work at a wedding facility (the last one being the most fun).

as for an update, still waiting for the transmission to show up.......along with some other items hah and could be months till the voltex stuff shows up at my door. im definitly not meeting my deadline which im not happy about, but i guess it takes time to get it done right the first time around. stay tuned and I will do my best to update more often.

I am trying to see about getting one machined for me except having the runners curve down like an S13 sr oem intake manifold. I need it to curve down so that the IC piping can stay relatively short, because the plenum is under the runners, which in turn...makes it take up much less space. Also allows for much more torque, which I wouldn't mind getting.

haha same here, the Fabrication work is on hold till the Chassis mounted Kognition wing comes in along with the Wilwood pedal board...need to work those items into the cage setup and make sure we place the mounts properly.

couldn't agree more...once the Mazworx dry sump oil setup comes in, we can make the engine/transmission mounts and test fit the engine to figure out where all the other stuff is going to sit and how we want to do the tubular front end...only a few things holding up the build, but they should all be herer shortly.

well, some of the items holding up fabrication are starting to roll in! The last part should be here by the end of next week at the latest. Yesturday, I finally got the Kognition Designs Wing that I have been looking forward to for awhile. I really can't explain the amazing quality of the work and its more artistic look to it. It has a 70" span, will be chassis mounted, and has Kognition Designs new quick release setup which will make it extremely easy to take off and put back on...but enough talking, here are some pics for you guys.

The tank alone holds 1.5 gallons, but you will also have oil in the ARE oil pan, oil lines, ect...plus I am also running an oil cooler, so my rough guess as of right now would be 2-2.5 gallons. Once everything is all together, I will figure out how much oil the whole system will actually hold.

My friends little sister was driving and got hit by a drunk driver and was on life support untill she past away last week at the age of 20 and over the weekend I found out that my sister got diagnosed with a brain tumor. I will try and do some updates on the car when the time is there, but as of right now, I have to be with the family untill we figure out the seriousness of it.

sorry for the lack of updates, just been busy with everything. My sister is on treatment and it is a very treatable tumor according to the expert she spoke with. My brother went through surgery and had everything corrected with the broken bones in his face and is healed up pretty well so far. From Racepak, I had to get a 4-channel Module so I could hook up the fuel sender and a few other sensors and have them show up on the Racepak IQ3 data logger. Also had to get another V-net harness to go from the module to the IQ3

Alright well I am sorry for the lack of updates, I have been working on getting this part for the last 6-7 months. I have been having constant emails back and forth with the company to get everything that I wanted and how I wanted it. it took about 5-6 months of talking and 1-2 months for the products to be made and shipped to me. It is from a European company known as Tarox. They are the brakes which my car will be running this year and the pictures I took do not do them justice AT ALL! They are beyond amazing and the craftsmanship is stunning. The setup is as follows.

10-pot front brake calipers with 14" two piece rotors
12-pot rear brake calipers with 14" one piece rotors
6-pot emergency brake calipers

Here are some photos I took with my Droid, so it's horrible quality and do not do them justice. My friend is coming up from Maryland next weekend to do a shoot of just the brakes, so I will post those up after he sends me copies. Last, I will be updating next week once some of the last few parts needed for the car are in.

The piston sizes are exactly the reason. I went and measured everything out, just to show you guys. The total piston surface area on the 10-pot caliper is 227 square centimeters or 8.94 square inches. The 12-pot caliper has a total piston surface area of 143 square centimeters or 5.64 square inches. Again, this is just per caliper, so double all the numbers to get it for each set of calipers. I did not include the e-brake caliper since its just the e-brake caliper. Oh and one little detail for piston surface area comparison...The Wilwood 6-pot front caliper setup for a 350z only covers 4.04 square inches (not even half of what the Tarox brakes front caliper covers)

I will take a picture of the pads side by side, the Tarox pad is a quite a bit bigger then a z32 pad. Also, Its more then just the size of the pad that will help the braking. The more pistons, the more evenly distributed the force becomes, resulting in better braking and more even pad wear. Second, by having more pistons, you can make them smaller (like most brake companies do, but the more pistons, the smaller you can make the pistons) which allows the air to pass around the smaller pistons easier, which cools the brakes better then large piston calipers. I am in a rush, so I will try to edit or add another post about this topic later if I get a chance. I am heading to MD for the Grand Prix till Sunday afternoon. I will update next week with a lot more parts that have come in but I don't have time right now to post pics or anything. Last, Thanks again for all the positive comments, guys!

The cut alternator bracket vs the uncut alternator bracket. I cut it since I am no longer using the one spot at the top of the bracket and I figured I would clean up the bracket by getting rid of the useless part. I noticed that not many people cut that part off that run the quest alternator...not 100% sure why they don't clean it up a bit, plus it only took 30 seconds to do hah

The cut alternator bracket mocked up with the new nissan quest alternator and the new tensioner setup for the SR. I replaced the center part of the tensioner so it would match the tensioner that came with the next part below.

Naprec sr20det power steering pump bracket from Japan. It lowers the pump 3in away from the exhaust manifold, which should definitely help it stay a lot cooler along with the power steering cooler kit.

Last, after tons of searching by John at Otaku Garage, it became obvious that it was almost impossible to get an SR power steering pump that was new. The end result was to get a new pump for a KA24DE and switch over the bracket and pulley.

There are still a few issues that have to be sorted out with the electronics, fabrication, wiring, ect. but it's finally picking up some speed! I would like to have it finished with enough time this year to dial in the car on the track and adjust the tune/suspension/car as needed.

WEll not exactly a big photo update, but the gussets are all done on the car. Touge Factory also did an X-brace through the firewall and connecting to the strut towers for a bit extra strength and rigidity.

Also, a bit of change has happened as far as electronics go. I am no longer running the AEM ems, arc panel, or hks boost controller. Instead, I will be running the ProEFI ems, I-boost, flex fuel kit (to run E85 and pump), and will be displaying/controling it with the color CAN display. Last, today an OMP FIA rated fire suppression system was ordered through TF along with some other parts. Hopefully some big updates will happen shortly!

I have never used them before, but I have a few sets of the same wheels and I plan to try out different tires on the other sets of wheels. I will also be trying different sizes as well. As for a bit of an update...OS Giken 6-speed gear set has now been ordered for the transmission :)

The sr22ve-t is being test fitted in the time attack Z and now has the dry sump system on as well. It's currently in the process of having the motor mounts done, but unfortunately the turbo wont clear the strut tower...so we're going custom manifold now on both sides on the engine. The Mazworx intake manifold also didn't clear the strut tower. TF will be making a turbo manifold with the turbo infront of the strut tower and a more slimmed down intake manifold for the other side. TF Works has been doing some killer work on the car so far, so it shouldn't be to bad of a hold up.

Last part of the update is that the OS Giken gear set has been installed in the z33 transmission and test fitted in the car.

amazing build, I really want to see the numbers this thing will be pushing out.

I donno how close you are to tuning but to give you an idea, finally after 2 years, I just did the BASE tune on mine, the black VVL s14 (we used to chat on my build thread but I keep forgettin to update it now) and we got 359whp at 14psi boost at 7500rpm. We're having problems with the wastegate but once thats fixed well be tuning at 9200rpm and 22psi boost.

amazing build, I really want to see the numbers this thing will be pushing out.

I donno how close you are to tuning but to give you an idea, finally after 2 years, I just did the BASE tune on mine, the black VVL s14 (we used to chat on my build thread but I keep forgettin to update it now) and we got 359whp at 14psi boost at 7500rpm. We're having problems with the wastegate but once thats fixed well be tuning at 9200rpm and 22psi boost.

okay, so I haven't updated in awhile, because parts have been changing like crazy and some hold ups on electrical items. I am no longer running the full-race manifold, since it didn't fit in the engine bay :wtc: so now TF Works is doing a custom exhaust manifold to have the turbo sit forward of the strut tower and engine:boink:. I am also no longer going to be running the EFR 8374 BW turbo (no room for it to fit). Touge Factory has now ordered a Precision turbo for the car. TF Works has been doing some amazing work on the car so far and I couldn't be more excited to see what they do with the intake and exhaust manifolds.

Yeah, I have been watching your build since you started it! It's coming along a bit quicker than mine hah. I'm going with a 5862, but TF works is making sure that the manifold will have room to move up to a larger turbo, if needed.

I'm well aware of those things, but I disagree on the inferior statement. Every engine is better than another based on specific tasks and goals. by removing the tubing behind the engine, I'm able to have the SR sit further back. By using a dry sump oil system, I'm able to have the SR sit lower. An SR is much easier to work on in the engine bay in the event something needs to be fixed/replaced at the track. The SR is also a cheaper engine to repair/replace. Don't take any of those statements as me saying an SR is unreliable, as reliability is reflected by the builder, which I have had only the best companies involved in the building of this engine and overall vehicle. An SR is just as reliable as any other engine, if it is built properly. I will be making more than enough power to meet my goal and be competitive around the track. In conclusion, I respect your opinion, but my reasons for doing this swap far out way your reasons not to do it. :)

Also, if you even read the first page of the thread, you would understand why this swap was done in the first place...but thank you for jumping in and giving your two cents without any knowledge as to why I did it. :)

This is exactly what I'm coming to realize with the VQ in my S13. I love it, and I think I am going to love it even more once I drive it, but I'm definitely debating going back to a 4cyl if I ever get into competition. Mine wouldn't be an SR though :).

Ditching a large motor for a little "shitty SR" [that's what a lot of people here in NZ like to call them] may not be everyones cup of tea but this conversion is fucking awesome. Reminds me of the guy back here that ditched his RB in his R32 for a huge powered twin turbo 13B, yup you read that correctly!

I will try and get a car update, when I get a chance. Once again, one bad thing happens after another. We had my brother in laws mother pass away on December 23rd at the age of 63 from a fast spreading cancer. She was told that she would have 2 weeks without treatment and 3 months with treatment...she lasted just shy of 5 months. She was an extremely tough little lady and will be dearly missed.

In addition to that; on January 1st, I was walking with my girlfriend and one of my best friends home from where my girlfriend works, around 2:15am (all of us were sober, we were walking her home from work). A group of 9 guys jumped us and hit us all up pretty good. I defended my girlfriend to the best of my ability, but was eventually knocked to the ground and kicked repeatedly by 6 of them, while my friend was hit by 2 of them and one hit my girlfriend. She tried to jump on top of me when I went down, but was thrown off of me and up against a car, so they could continue to beat me. She suffered a lot of bruises on her body, a sprained finger from trying to hit back, a bloody lip, and a concussion. My friend suffered some bruising from a few hits to the head. I suffered a deep laceration above the eye, that required 10 stitches, received a lot of cuts and bruises on my face/body, my gums are all messed up from hits to the mouth,and a concussion. Three people ran down the street to help us and some of them also ended up being hit by some of the 9 guys but eventually caused the 9 guys to leave. A police report has now been filed and they are pulling tapes from all the bars on the street to see if they were in any of them.
