View Full Version : Car dies when taken out of gear, etc.

Sup, I got an S13 SR20DET in my S14. The most notable thing is that I have a BOV that is vented to atmosphere aka not recirc'd. I know that this would be a huge culprit in this kind of thing but I still want a few opinions.

I have had my car with that setup for over a year now and for the first 10 months this problem has never occurred. There is nothing different really about the car, just out of no where, suddenly when I w.ould take the car out of gear, whether it be just cruising or spirited driving, my idles would drop really low and sometimes die.

Before the car is warmed up it is fine really. Car idles at about 700rpm I would say. It is running a bit rich right now and I know for sure that I have an exhaust leak... I need to replace my down pipe cause it's all fucked, but just haven't had the time or money/motivation to do so.

But yeah, besides that, the car drives perfectly fine. It's just that sometimes when I pop the car into neutral, RPMs may drop all the way down and sometimes it will recover by itself. Sometimes I give it gas to stay alive. Sometimes it just dies. Turning the car back on right after that, sometimes it does the same thing and just dies.

Any other input? As stated I know that a BOV that isn't recirc'd could cause this problem, but like I said, I ran it fine like that for the first 10 months without any such incident. I would recirc it but I need the fitting and was looking for a quick fix but if I must, I'll just order the fitting to get it done.

Oh yeah, no the car was never tuned but even with the BOV the car never ran incredibly rich. Idled just fine (before the exhaust leak) at 14.7 and would lean out/rich up appropriately.

Check for leaks or it could be the BOV acting up. Tried tightening the BOV up yet?

Probably a slim chance, but your fuel pressure regulator could have shit out. On my old KA-Turbo I had the same symptoms. I had to give the car gas for it to idle right at stop lights, if I took it out of gear 9/10 times it would shut off.

Thats a far less common reason it does that. I spent about a year trying to figure it out on the KA...turns out it was just that it didn't have enough fuel pressure to idle.

Haven't tried tightening the BOV yet, I'm going to give that a shot.

I'll try adding a little more with the fpr. My gauge just broke tho, so I'll see.

Today was the first time where just sitting still, idle the car died out of nowhere. Really strange

Dirty/clogged IACV

^ thinking it might be the IACV too. I once had an issue where the RPMS stayed at 2000rpms constantly until I cleaned it out. I'll give a shot.

Anybody know where you can get another one of those plastic screws though? Mine is fucked.

Anyways to answer - FPR is cool, my fuel pressure is pretty consistant. I have an HKS SSQV3 and it didn't have a screw on it that I saw so I could tighten it up. zz

I had the same problem but it wasn't either of those stated. I started running rich and my ring lands were giving out, car would practically die with any throttle let off , and then sometimes it wouldn't want to even start. This wasnt an sr20 btw, but how rich are you running? Any chance you could be fuel washing your cylinders?

yeah over fueling can do that
also dirty iacv...
also the bov
but check voltage to iacv
while its running if its low this could be the issue
alot of ppl have this issue and alot of the time it is voltage to the selinoid

clean the iacv,
disconnect and plug bov vac line (just for testing)
boost leak test
raise idle to 900
check TPS

Just a few things i can think of no specific order of testing...

As far to how rich I was running, I was probably idling consistently around 12.1 AFR. I just adjusted my fuel pressure though and even with a slight exhaust leak, I am now at about 14.7, just where I want to be. Still no real improvements however.

What I am finding though is that sometimes when driving, my car will kind of bog suddenly like I blew a coupler off and have a boost leak. It will only be for a few seconds until I let off the throttle but 99% of the time I will be able to get back on the throttle and drive fine. Say I drive for about an hour, this might happen just once or twice within that time period.

I checked all of my intercooler piping and it all looks good to me. Could it be that my MAF is also going bad or do I have a strange boost leak somewhere? Also wonder if this has to do with my idle issue, but this just started happening the other day

you can make a boost leak tester with a coupler and some pcv pipes look it up on youtube. Sometimes the small leaks are hard to spot

Mine is doing the same thing!!!! Fireballs too in between shifts. It started happening to me after i installed an intake manifold. One of the hoses to the iacv is a lil too short, and has a slight crimp in it. So I think that's my issue.

You're probably talking about the iacv cooling lines. Don't worry about kinking those hoses. All they do is warm up the wax in the idler to lower your idle when the car is at operating temp. Colder idle = 1300 rpm ish.

Sounds like people run atmospheric bov's without a tune for it.. Which at that point fireballs should be expected during shifts.

Ze12o has good ideas. If you're lazy try spraying carb cleaner down the idle screw and see if that fixes things. Most likely the cleaner won't be able to fully reach the IACV parts though, so off with the manifold for you.

Mine has to be cleaned also, but I only get bogging upon start ups.

why has no one said to clean the MAF?

dirty maf will cause all of the things you have listed

Vacuum Leak
IACV Adjustment
Timing
And Rericulate the BOV

In that order. If it's fine when cold it's due to the cold start/high idle. Gotta think with the weather changing, it's going to effect how it runs a little. The exhaust leak is not goint to effect how it runs unless the 02 sensor is after it, and even then it's negligable at best.

Sounds like aproblem I had with my d21 that jumped time it was only off a tooth or 2 it would drive fine till you shifted or took it out of gear then it would just die out so I would check your timing
