My rb25 kouki kinda build

Andres here from texas. Been contemplating this swap for almost 2 years. I had planned on doing it on my old s14, heres a pic:

but when i had a chance to get me a kouki i couldnt let it pass, so I bought it and then sold my zenki.
All the work will be done by me and also most of the fabbing.

Engine i bought from jdmenginecorp from dallas, only 4 hours from my location and really good prices but, basically its a hit and miss (a lot of bad and good reviews) and their warranty's really crappy. I had originally planned on getting my engine from jhotimports but they closed down in dallas. I wanted to pick my engine myself so this was my only option. I dont recommend buying from here.

First things first, a mounting kit, but hey, i have an arc welfing machine at home, so wth! place the engine/tranny at a desired position, got a bunch of metal plates in different thickness, cut, tacked, then cut some more and welded everything together, final result:

Not the best nor prettiest welds, but they'll hold and will get the job done.

I had it sitting on these

was just gonna add some angles to them to help for support, kind of like the mckinney ones but then i realized my oil pan was sitting way too low, sitting about an inch and a half lower than the crossmember and though it could be dangerous. It was also a little bit crooked and to fix it I was gonna have to do everything all over again, so i decided to go a different route. raised the engine about 1/4 of an inch higher than desired, hold it with the hoist in place, bolted the metal plates to the stock mounts and tacked them to the crossmember, removed the crossmember and weld the real plates to it with plenty of lateral support. End result:

now there's enough clearance between the crossmember and the oil pan and the bottom of the pan sits about the same as the crossmember.
But now my tranny, where the starter goes is hitting the tunnel, but its bearly touching it so no biggie, i'll just bang it a bit. I removed my dashboard and the blower and evaporator box to be able to see whats behind the tunnel where i'll be bangin the firewall and to be able to install and remove the harness with more ease.

Also bough a z32 to do a full brake swap. Got my fully functional rear brakes done:

will resurface or buy new rotors later depending on how bad these are. The rest of the swap is gravy, im just wating on my repair kit for my fronts 'cause it looks like they were leaking a little. Also im wating on my new front hubs i ordered from nissan. Will be swapping the booster and the bmc as well, then a downgraded z32 with rear 4 lug and s14 brakes all around will be for sale, oh yeah, and a bad head gasket lol.
So i wanna know if all of this is worth, my warranty has already expired and i dont even know how good the engine runs, time to face my most feared part of the build: wiring!! Not enough write ups out there for rb s14, at least not that i could find, but this one help me a lot http://media.sxoc.com/contributors/s14faq/RB25-S14_Jan_10.pdf along with motoralldata. No pictures for wiring, the most boring part anyway. Some say that if it takes you more than 2 hours you're thinking too much and shlt, but this took me forever, adding all the hours of work i'd say it took me around 24 hours, and this was for the engine harness only. im sure i could do it a bit faster if i only wanted the damn car to move but i was trying to get everything right, wipers, wipers amp. I might even get the cruise control working.
tranny harness wasnt that hard, same guide and motoralldata again, only took me a whole afternoon to do it :P that i do have a picture, not much to see here:

So i put a ka oil filter on in, some cheap oil, some gear oil in my tranny, put in my super badass new harness, put a u pipe from my turbo to my intake, cranck it and this is what happens, click on it:

a lot of fuking smoke thanks to all the oil i had put in it to pressure test it. It stoped smoking after a while but there was still a little miss, well my #1 wasnt working, i wasnt getting any pulsation at the injector connector, i got to work on it and turn out to be a bad contact at the computer. Start it once again and this is what happens, click on it:

So apperantly my engine's running alright and hearing refuels me with more energy to work on it.
i still gotta remove the whole thing to bang the trans tunnel where the starter goes and where the vss goes. But before i got some custom lines to build, for the power steering and for my a/c, yeah a/c, gotta have a/c in texas. So i measured, test fitted, cut and test fitted again and marked, take everything to my work saturday, weld it, come back home, test fit again and this is what i end up with, oh yeah, did i mention i'll be using the stock clutch fan? :

All of this didnt happen in a couple of days, my full time job sometimes drains me and its hard to come home and still work on the project. Not to mention money...

Right now i got the engine and tranny down, this time i removed it from the bottom, proved to be a lot easier than doing it from the top. This swap would be a hell lot easier with a car lift, something my dad and i have tough of buying more than one time. I already have a full exhoust system, an apexi n1 style, forgot the real name of it. Have a knock off cat delete pipe and an sr20 downpipe which i gotta re'weld for the rb25, also gotta figure out my intercooler piping. I already have a fmic with the in and out on the same side, which turned out to be huge, way bigger than i expected, would require me to cut or remove the bumper support wich i dont want to do, Im probably gonna use it witout bumper support until i find a welder who can modify it for me, or get a smaller one. Very nice start to the build! Cool to see custom mounts being done, my brother has a similar type of mounting system for his rb20. And awesome purchase on the kouki, mine is originally the same color (LS1), but it was repainted a lil more purple. Rare color for sure. Maybe you can get a smaller intercooler to fit behind the crash bar. I have an ISIS m-spec IC and I got it to fit behind my crash bar with a lil bit of trimming (just the lip of the bar),and its by no means a small intercooler. Looking forward to more progress!

My exhaust system turned out to be pretty quiet and deep sounding, hopefully the tone doesnt change much underload.
Im trying to figure out why my engine is kind of taking too long/cranking a lot to start when its cold, im checking my aac, ficd and air regulator tomorrow.

working inside tonight. Sand blasted calipers at work today, brought them home, took them apart, cleaned them really good with carb cleaner, took them apart and just have to put them back together with their new parts. Cylinders and pistons look ok, so honing needed here.

engine sits like this right now, havent figured out my hard-to-start-when-cold problem, checked all my valves and they r all good, my tming seems to be good too and have enough fuel pressure, anyone has any experience with something like this? No vacuum leak either.

thank u all for the input. rb20240sx, that car in your sig remains me a lot of my old zenki, gonna get some glass stain to paint my corner and bumper lights on this one too, all clear front end aint much fun.. u may not have to use a different mount/bracket setup, ive seen some guys running some aftermarket setups running the stock clutch fan, all u have to do is mount the fan blade on the back of the clutch instead of the front and shave a little bit of the blades to clear the crankshaft damper and u should be good!

No shlt they could be better, but wont get any better if i never practice, gotta master this little machine before i upgrade to a better machine. Im sure the weld will hold, if they start cracking i'll just take them to a pro shop to re-weld them.
Well i figured my hard to start problem. Turns out it was my start signal, i had it right but i had a short on my ecu connection. Fixed it and now it starts right up! Gotta put my interior together, fix a few details and i'll be on the st in no time.

up and running. Just got a few issues. Its kind of bogging at higher rpms, gotta do a boost leak test and get a bigger intercooler, sr20's is really restrictive, Planning on getting me one of this:

Charged my a/c system but could get the compressor to kick in, apperantly i didnt wire the ecu to to a/c system correctly so i gotta work out some wiring, hopefully i dont have to remove my dash again.. suspension is all loose, whoever owned it before though it was a good idea to buy ebay adjustable arms, so im buying stock suspension parts now. I dont like a car with so much details, im not really enjoying it too much and the screamer pipe isnt helping either... so i got plenty of work still, this time on a running car.

i heard that its not a very good idea cuz some pistons run very lean.
I really like greddy intakes on rb's but i read that u can actually loose power when installed with stock turbo and no tune, which im not ready for, so yeah, intake's gonna have to wait.

my little bro n i went to nismo fiesta. Saw some really nice rides out there n had a chance to dyno my car. Got almost exactly what i expected. This was on a mustang dyno too, which i heard always gives results a bit lower than the actual ones:
i did 243ft-lbs n 269whp at 8-9psi(the way i daily drive)

mount it behind the clutch rather than the front (in between engine and clutch rather than between clutch and radiator) and shave the blade fins on the back enough to clear the crankshaft damper.

yeah, just remove the 4 10mm bolts (i think) and bolt it on the back of the clutch, shave the fins to clear the crank and wallah!!.... bro i got so excited when i saw your pm, i though i had found a stock fan shroud haha

first i got my nismo 2 way installed along with new urethane bushings. I gotta say, those bushings werent as easy to install as i expected....

removing the old oem bushings from the subframe is kinda hard, just as hard as the removing the subframe main bushings but on an uncomfortable position, having a lift would've really helped... i also put some redline in it, good stuff.

then came the suspension. Spl arms on back and tension rods upfront.

so today i took my car to get it aligned, wasnt very far off but had to be sure and wanted to straighten my steering wheel up haha
Now i just need a good fender roll (made an ugly :):):) gash on one of my fronts) and i should be good to go. I am driving the car but im afraid im gonna make another gash any second...

That's good! Did u tuck your body harness, do the diff bushings and fully disassembled the coilovers for cleaning and inspection too?
I've been thinking a lot about my intercooler and piping setup. I really hate my intake manifold but have decided to keep it for a better mid range power. i really wish they'd make an affordable front facing intake with long runners, but it just aint happening.. I'm also having second thoughts about my fmic. i've been wondering about going back to a smic setup this time using an aftermarket/bigger core and at the same time shorten my piping for better throttle response. Either way, i think im gonna be getting one of these kits:

Then im gonna get the pipes welded together so it can only be one coupler on each intercooler side.
So now im trying to score a good deal on an r34 smic or an arc smic and a rb25 stock fan shroud.

Didn't tuck the harness car won't be that low, The coils were brand new out of the box :). You can try a TT Supra sidemount. The core is thicker than the stock RB cores but It will prob still get heat soaked. The Fan clutch is a huge + for cooling.

started working on my new fmic set up today. Removed everything and started working on the charge pipe. Should come out pretty nice and the new greddy v-spec ic i'll be using should help a lot.

going from like 10 couplers to only 4. Tacked the charged pipe with my arc welder (stainless steel). I got me an eastwood 175 for xmas, i should have my 220 power hooked up in a couple of weeks and will be able to weld it. Cant wait!

so i got one of these, got lucky at a local yard and couldnt let it pass. These things are freging huge, i have even read about guys running them having problems with their oil temps being too low at the track, with the stock thermostat in it. Anyway, i live in texas, and the car is mostly daily driven, but when u drive hard in temperatures above 100 im sure temps cant be too low...
I took it apart and checked the thermostat and it opened up, i just didnt have a thermometer and couldnt check what temp it opens at. So i'll check it again after i buy a thermometer.
The cooler plus the oil filter stud i got the hardest parts covered, just need the sandwish plate and hoses and hardware, yeah i find that to be the easiest part. But i wont be installing a cooler until i buy an oil temp gauge unit, that way i can compare the temps before and after.
btw, it wont be installed on front of intercooler

so i sold the oil cooler. I coulndt fit it anywhere, it was either gonna have to seat on top of the intercooler, but then the intercooler was gonna seat too low, or on front of the intercooler, which would affect my intercooler's temperatures very drastically i think.
Putting the oil cooler setup plan aside for a couple of months.
I did however replace my worn out subframe bushings with ES polys.

i also port matched the freddy IM. 1st runner needs to be grinded down towards the TB side and the rest of them towards the back of the engine. I also polished it a bit as deep as i could go.

i also modded a few things including coolant pipes, injector harness and made a few gaskets. Everything was test fitted and put together. Turbine housing was also clocked. Everything fits good.

Ok, quick update here, hopefully i get some critics and responses. I have done a lot lately, car probably would be running by now if i didnt like the taste of beer so much... So, I re-routed and re-covered the factory harness in order to fit properly with the new front facing IM. I also extended the injector wires about an inch for a better fitment. Heater pipes on the engine side were also held in place with new brackets. I finished my custom made turbo coolant hardlines, i am now debating what i should get to wrap them with to keep temperatures a bit lower, maybe some kind of sticky heat deflector foil, idk i havent even look I will also be running about a feet of oil hose for the turbo oil discharge, so i will also have to look for something to wrap that with. I put everything in for a final test fit, then everything will be removed again for a final assembly and torque down.

I took opportunity to build me a sweet power brace, making sure it didnt hit any engine parts nor the sway bar. I think I overkilled it a little...
I sand blasted everything and used 1.5" pipe with some really thick wall, didnt even bother measuring it's thickness, but way more than necessary... Then I boxed the brackets with 14ga plate.

Turns out i ordered 2 clamps wrong so i'll be ordering those too. I am also Adding a mil-spec connector at the firewall, hence all the wiring on the back of the harness. But everything is going according to plan. Just a few more hours of labor and I should be able to start it. Im really having fun with this build.

I also installed my oil cooler. I had to make a whole on the chassis to put the lines through, right above the rail, not too big, but it still hurted as hell as i was cutting... I will be building some aluminum ducting for the coolers/bumper. Maybe, just maybe some for the brakes..

I also stripped the engine to a bare longblock and painted the block the best i could. I think it came out good for having the head installed. Then I finally torqued my manifolds and turbo with new bolts, new gaskets and all the goodies...

I do not have a dimple set, i had to use my imagination: i used a big socket, a smaller sharpened socket and my press. U get the rest of the picture, worked pretty good for 16 gauge plate.
I never heard of the idler bolt being weak, i'll look into that, thanks for the tip! And yes, rb's are interference motors.

Very little work done today, still i got to remove the factory bushings to make room for my ES poly bushings and put a layer of primer on my lca to at least prevent rust, gloss black will come later.

I used to have a RB25 in my s13, the day after I got it running that bolt snapped and bent 22 out of 24 valves. it ended up costing me $650 to get the head rebuilt.

I don't know if I over torqued it, or what, but it broke, and it sucked.

it also says to replace the bolt in the FSM whenever you replace the timing belt.

a grade 8.8 bolt from ACE is the best $1.50 you could spend. lol. it could save you alot of money.

You should really consider installing a crank snout extension so your oil pump doesnt slip at high rpm, might as well do it as the engine is out of the car. BTW is the koyo rad gonna fit with the factory clutch fan?

Im staying right under 400hp and wont take it to high rpm, 7k at the most, i doubt there'll be anything up there for me with the .63 ar exh

And the radiator will fit, it will barely clear but it will fit, i might have to do a little more shaving on the blades.

Now to figure a way out to install the interior panels. It's a little harder than it should be 'cause im installing the bolts from the outside in.
Then i decided to get my tires mounted and install my wheels to lower the car, figured it should inspire me a little to finish it faster. I gotta say, now that i see it on the ground with its new shoes on i feel like finishing it tomorrow to take it for a drive!

finished the ps cooler bracket and finished installing everything. Also installed my custom brake lines and started bleeding the system, but i ran out of fluid... Z32's on all 4 corners does use a lot of it...

thanks guys. I havent heard of u-channel gasketing, i was thinking of just gluing spliced vacuum hose lol, but I'll look into that, thanks. Aluminum is of course much better, but i dont have the means to tig and getting it done at a shop costs a loooot.... Plus i would have to take the car to them in order to get them right, and i dont really trust anyone at doing anything for me around here...

Oh yeah, forgot about sizes. Theyre all 17x9+24, i had 255/45 on the rears/no spacer, little camber, slightly rolled. 245/45 on the front, autozone slip on spacers unknown size (very small) to avoid rubbing on the coilovers, little camber slightly rolled.

Base coat is from ScratchWizard, purchased from a seller on ebay. Acme clear coat came from the same seller. I believe their base coat is made by sherwin williams. First time spraying two-stage, got to say, I really enjoyed spraying it. Much easier than spraying single-stage IMO.
Meanwhile I've been working a budget project. I sold my t-top aw11 and now Im working on my other aw11. Im putting together a custom fmu turbo setup. Car will be running 6psi on an sr t25 and I'll be more than happy if I gain 40 horses.

Forcewerkz valances aren't the best fitting valances, but that's all I could afford after buying both oem bumpers brand new, so I'll just deal with them. I still have to get the right bolts and clips for them. Can anybody recommend some strong double sided tape or something similar? The new paint sort of matched the old paint, a little wax/buff on the old paint should do it until Im ready to paint the whole car. I will also have to re-locate my engine oil cooler since it didnt clear the jdm bumper...

It's been a while, and my car's still not on the road. So, this past week I was on vacation and decided to put some work into it. I couple months ago I decided to replace my 4 bolt outlet, .63 a/r turbine housing with a v-band, .82 a/r one. This meant modifying my downpipe, but instead I decided to re-do it all. At the same time, I decided to re-locate my engine by re-doing the engine and transmission brackets, so, im basically going back to zero....

New transmission and crossmember sandblasted and ready for paint. For these, I used new material. I went with a thinner gauge to reduce some weight. I also used a new (to me) engine crossmember, mostly to save all the cutting and grinding work. New downpipe was also sand blasted and painted high temperature flat black using vht paint. Not sure if it will last, but I have decided not to use exhaust wrap on it any more. The old downpipe (which I re-used some pieces from) had already started rusting under the exhaust wrap, and it had only been almost a year, so yeah, I think I'll stay away from it from now on.

I also bit the bullet and bought a new wiring specialties harness.
Also, I have decided to have a professional install my alarm system. I have come to realize my electrical/wiring skills still need some work haha. That plus I am missing my car more than ever. So, hopefully I'll be putting things back together later on.
I cant wait to be on the road again.
