i just recently bought a 89 s13 that has 192,296 miles. the motor is making a rattling noise that gets louder as i drive. from what i know s13's are known for having bad timing guides. but i dont know how many guides the 24e's have. anyone who has had this problem please help. i dont want to drive it till i get this problem sorted out. :wtc:

rod knock? usually the rattling timing sound goes away after idle

if it was the rod it would have gave out when i drove it home from south central. i drove about 25+ miles and going 65-80mph.!

w/ mileage close to 200k just rebuild or save up for a DE swap. at this point fixing one thing will lead to something else failing in the future. the best band aid is an overhaul or swap.

that's what i was thinking and they are selling me a rb20det for 900$ but not sure on it. i will have to do some modifications to get it to fit and i dont know it ka trans will work for it!:2f2f:

does it get louder as you raise the rpms? sounds like it's your typical lifter issue with the single cam

sounds like it comes from up top around the valve cover. and the noise does get louder as the rpms raise. it also backfires a good amount. i think the timing could be off but not sure

from what i heard it only does that when you run low on oil. Correct me if i am wrong. So you should maybe check your oil.

But my car did the same exact then which lead to rod knock.

Best thing to do is just buy a new motor or overhaul yours.

i will but it still runs and its been running like that for a while and still nothing. from my understanding its the lifters but u may be right i will check it as soon as i can. if not im just gonna sell it and get a coupe.

what oil weight do you run? on 10W30 mine made that noise after it warmed up but after switching to 10W40 it's quiet as a lamb, also try holding the rpms at 3-4K for 5-10min to bleed the lifters, if not it's time to either bleed lifters manually or buying new lifters
