if your worried about sound, why are you not wanting to run a resonator?
too much exhaust restriction ? durp durp??

Good luck with this. After 4 times on the ring I had decided the track exhaust needed to be replaced with some HKS goodness. You will need to keep that resonator in order to keep her quiet. I recommend a high flow cat and good cat back :)

My down pipe got a leak, my resonator was jacked up so the muffler shop took it all out. they built a down pipe all the way to the muffler so now its loud as shit. I just want to put a quieter muffler and be done. any ideas which one?

if you don't run a resonator, it'll make your exhaust sound very raspy... IMHO everyone should have at least one resonator in their system...

Use an OEM-style muffler.

So go to Summit Racing, buy one of these (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-24222/) and have them add it into the system.
If you're worried about it being too loud, and you are straight piped all the way from your exhaust manifold through only one muffler, no muffler you buy will really make a difference.

I run straight 3 inch with just a magnaflow 50 series muffler. It's pretty quiet and I love it. No cat, no res.

IMO 4 bangers with just a muffler will sound absolutely terrible. You know all those Honduh guys with that nasty rasp tone? Thats what you'll get. I run HKS with no cat and a resonator and think it sounds great, no rasp just a nice deep tone.

try a borla 2" muffler, borla made the nissan motorsports exhaust for the 240sx, i have it and i love it. it is a 2" stainless steel cat-back with no resonator and dual tips like stock. i used to have a hallowed out cat too, i dont recommend this, too much gas fumes, wont pass smog, and i felt like i lost some low end. now i have a pdm hi-flow cat.
