View Full Version : Question about whether I need head work to achieve 500hp on my KA-T

First off, I've searched the best I could for an idea of what my answer may be, however we all have different setups. My builds spec is as follows:

Block
8:1 compression block .20 over
Arias rods
Supertech pistons

Head
Arp head studs
Cometic Head gasket
New valve seals

Turbo
Turbonetics 62-1 T4
38mm Tial wastegate
HKS SSQV
V mount intercooler/Griffen rad

Fuel
1000 cc Precision Top feed
Top feed fuel rail
Walboro 255
Nismo FPR
300Z Fuel Filter

Trans
Excedy pressure plate
ACT 6 puck sprung
JUN 10LB Flywheel

Management
Torn between AEM & Nistune, obvious choice would be AEM, however being a college student means somewhat a budget's involved. Input please.

So my question is, my goal was 500hp,
however I'm worried my valve springs and retainers may not be able to keep up with such high boost at 7krpm and might cause my valves to float or god forbid drop.

What's your input on this, & would 400hp be a much safer goal on a stock head?

If I take that route, I'll be taking the head out later down the road and redo everything supertech along with upgraded cams, and of course more boost. Next question is once I do the head, what numbers can I expect on my setup? Thanks for any help ahead of time, and for reference, majority of this setup's from my older brother,

As for my car, here's some pics of it on its old T28 setup,

Once again, thanks for all help ahead of time. And yes, I posted this on KA-T.org but no one really cared to reply.

headwork will get to 500 hp easier than a stock head. but you dont need headwork to reach 500hp. i would spend the money on the AEM instead. 62-1 should be capable of 500 crank hp. also a really good ignition system is a good idea too. hi boost levels make it hard for the spark to jump the plug gap. good luck

Ignition system- I have coilpacks off an S2K I could attempt to wire up.

As far as where I posted, my mistake. Just felt Chat had more traffic, but mods please move if need be. Sorry.

If your going to wire up a Honda coil pack, just run with a k24 (tsx, accord) coil packs. These provide a higher pulse width.
Or
Find a set of okada coil packs for your setup, write down the actual part number ( most likely will be a denso product of sort). Then cross reference that number to whichever vehicle it applies to.
Okada just takes a more powerful coil (I,e k24 coil) and throws their logo on it and sells it for $700 for an s2000.
This is on my coils that I personally have sourced

you wont make 500hp without at the very least springs/retainers... 400 is much more doable.

If you 're going to run coil packs you're going to need a standalone - theres only one ignition driver on a KA ecu. If you're gonna go standalone you ought to just order some supertech springs and some kelford 272s

Ended up settling for mid 400. Gonna do the head one time when I can do cams at the same time. Will keep you guys posted when she hits the dyno in a few months.

Pushing 500 with a stock head is like trying to fart thru a straw..weird enough it could be done but it wouldn't be easy nor fun..lol

anyways cant wait to see the end result
