View Full Version : $140.00 Labor for changing brake pads

I finally found some shops who will let me bring in my own aftermarket pads and they will install them for me, however they want to charge $140.00 for installing pads, turning and resurfacing the rotors. Both shops asked for the same exact labor amount....do you guys think this a rip?

For one yes,I did my own brake job,very easy.Where do you live?If you want the step by step instuctions on how to do it your self e-mail me or if you are close call me and we can talk about it.

heh i've done pads before....but now i live in an apartment so i have no garage =(

Brake pad changing is honest to go, retard work, you can do it with your stock scissor jack and a screwdriver... and most places I have seen will resurface rotors for like 6 bucks (canadian) a rotor. so... yes... do it yourself, and get to rotors resurfaced if you want... but remember that if you have stock rotors and you are running some type or carbon metallic pads or something... you will burn them out in no time... I have changed my front pads in a driveway, and a parking lot would be the same thing... so no biggie.

That's about two hours worth of labor. We all know it doesn't take longer then an hour to finish everything. But that really is how much everyone charges. Do it yourself, that's a ripoff.

rip off.....if your good it takes like 30 mins....it took me 30 mins to swap all 4 sets on an accord....sooooo..........

umm... what generation Accord or did you not turn the rotors? &nbsp;IIRC, 3-5th gen Accords have hub over rotor assemblies that make removing rotors to turn them a biatch.

Otherwise - this IS a job you can do at your apartment complex. &nbsp;I have <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

93.....no need 2 turn hubs....just unbolt...remove...use clamp thing to push back the calibers...then put new ones on and rebolt. done <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>

Greg, even though it is somewhat monkey work.. you DO have to understand hydrolics and how the brakes operate.

This weekend we did several brake jobs at my shop. &nbsp;I worked on 2 S13's and 1 of them had a seized caliper. &nbsp;The piston was okay, but one of the pins was seized on the swing arm.

What does this mean? &nbsp;This means the 30 minute job because a 2 day job. &nbsp;We ended up getting him new calipers. &nbsp;He's running a nice Brembo rotor / Axxis pad with new calipers now.

Its nice when the sun shines, but will you &nbsp;be able to handle the work if and when it becomes more difficult? &nbsp;That is the question..

i remember working on my old S13 and that was a BEEOCH without the proper tools. Took me 3 hours to get both the front and rears done.

Now that i don;t have the tools...except my chopsticks then i have a problem...no jackstands either.

The way I look at it, $140 will buy you a FSM, a 14 peice sears wrench set, and a cheap hydraulic jack and jack stands. &nbsp;Plus it will only require 3 hours on a weekend, and will teach you more about your car if you do it yourself.

I would also recomend getting some new DOT 4 brake fluid and replacing it at the same time. &nbsp;If your car is already going to be jacked up with the wheels off, it only adds ten more minutes per wheel once you know what you're doing. &nbsp;Speed bleeders are great if you don't have a buddy around to pump the brakes.

But then again, not everyone want to do get dirty when it comes to their car. &nbsp; If it must go to a shop, I would say their price is high. &nbsp;Its pretty easy to do, so its not really nessasary that it go to nissan. &nbsp;For someone with a lift and experience it should only take an hour.
