So I just put my motor back in after replacing my rear main seal, i hooked everything back up and went to start it and it just clicks once. The car didnt have trouble starting at all before this and the starter was off for like a week. I've never had a bad starter so im not to sure what it sounds like

Does it push start? assuming its a manual... How does your voltage look?

Check your fuses
make sure you connect the one (1) ground wire connector on top of the starter. shit happened to me

i read shit that said to try this but i was skeptical, guess ill give it a shot haha

havent tried to push start it, where should i check voltage. just the battery and starter?
Check your fuses
will do, just was too tired after working on it all day

hah yea that little thing always falls off, its on though and when its not the starter doesnt do anything
thanks guys

Sounds like a dead battery or a brand new battery with a bad connection or a sticky starty solenoid. Make sure when you tap it you are tapping the solenoid which is the smaller cylinder and not the larger unit lol.

haha alright, well im willing to bet its the solenoid. sticky solenoid=new starter? im surprised it could just go bad like that in a week

Look at your caution lights in the cluster while you crank it! Do all the lights vanish or stay on while you crank? This will tell you for sure. If they vanish that means your starter is pulling amps, which is good because it only does that when its cranking which means it works! So your battery, or battery connection is poor. If they stay on while your car just clicks, that means your starter isn't even turning and could be dead or solenoid is frozen which means get new starter. This could also mean the connections on starter are poor, check fuses too. You can also test it with a multimeter at this point to see if you have power. Ground will be present when its cranking. They make cool diagnostic tools to bypass the car and just test starter while its on vehicle but that's going overboard. 9/10 when you take something apart that worked before, it's your fault when it now doesn't work.

Check, with a multimeter, on the little connector that always fall off for 12V when you put your key to the "Start" position. If you have 12V, then you should at least have a "Clicking" sound when you put the key in the "Start" position. If you don't have 12V, check fuse, and clutch interlock relay.
If you have 12V, make sure that you have a constant 12V on the starter(Big wire, approx gauge 4, that comes directly from the battery)
If everything sorts out, you can always take the starter off and test it on a bench. Also, it is fairly easy to disassemble and clean the solenoid if it get sticky.
Hope that help,

so i tested my power wire that comes up to the motor from the battery and it had 12v, the little prong on the starter has 12v too and when i try to start it, itll drop down to like 3? i tried to hit the solenoid but it did nothing. i read it could be the clutch interlock switch or interlock relay. i was able to start the car before without even pushing in the clutch cause its a 5 speed swap car. so i dont think those would even be relevant to me. what fuses/relays should i check? so for being lazy but im strapped for time with school and work and the car gets tuned friday so im not spending a whole lot of time researching for it
hmm thats weird... i once had a problem with my wiring harness near the passenger side fuse box.. there are a couple conectors( pretty large) Something burnt up in it, and was not allowing voltage to go threw while trying to start the car. i ended up soldering the wires together to bypass the connector. and it started right up.. i dont know what the plug was for but it fixed my problem. might wana check there.. ill try find a picture

I had the same problem and it ended up being a poor battery ground to the chassis.
Could also check your engine ground.

When you say you have 12V on the little prong of the starter, you mean with the wire disconnected, and the 12V is on the starter itself, not on the wire? Also, is it when the key is off the ignition switch?
If yes it looks like the starter solenoid is stuck out. The easiest way to confirm that is take the starter off the car. If the gear is protruding out of the starter, it is because it is stuck.
Hope that help again,

just pull that starter out and get it checked on local auto parts store. go for basic

Had your battery tested? Just because you see 12volts, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is good. How about doing a voltage drop test on your starter cables....there might be some resistance in them.

This is why it pays to do enough research to at least know when they're trying to take you for a ride :D

So I got another starter today that supposedly worked, I even had it checked at autozone before I got it. I put it in and it's doing the same thing. Idk if the guy that checked it didn't know how or what cause I didn't actually see him do it like I did when I had my first one checked. Any ideas now?
