Alright Zilvians got a problem w/ my 240, where are the engine gurus i need your help. So my KA gave up on me the other day on the way to work...I was cruising down the 60 freeway when i started to notice my RPM needle jumping erratically, it did that for about a minute before the car started jumping in relation to the needle. 2 minutes later it started slowing down, I had my foot on the gas and it didnt matter the car started to slow down it would go past 40mph until if finally stopped, ditched me off the 605..
So i got it towed to my job. The car turns on then turns right off. I can keep it on by revving it but it still wont rev past 3000rpm, if i floor it it will pulse from 2-3k rpm and backfire. A co-worker knew a mechanic so i had him check it out he told me it might be my coil, or ignitor chip. I was gonna get sum used ones but since its for my daily i opted for new parts. $180 later same shit. So know im hearing it might be my TPS, OR MAF OR my DIZZY....no clear answer, ughhh frustrating, So before i go spending more ca$h, has anyone had this happen to them or anyone have sum good knowledge on SOHC KA's, got try and fix it fast. I have a feeling it something simple cause the motor ran STRONG before this, so im trying to fix it myself before having another mechanic have a whack @ it

Cover the basic...
Spark plugs & wires, fuel pump.
Have a good day,

make sure plugs are correctly plugged in..
check fuel pump... fuses and electrical stuff..
if you have a Check engine light.. then get the code off it and find out what it might be

Sounds like the distributor to me. Jumping tach needle points in that direction.

thanks for the help....I have fuel and spark and all the connections are good. Thats why i was having trouble figuring it out. I also had a feeling it was the Dizzy just because of the jumping needle, but since the car turns on and i have spark i thought it was something else, but i wont go past 3k so the dizzy seems like the probl.. so i will try the dizzy...ill update once i change it...thanks for the help.....

****UPDATE****
changed the DIZZY first then changed the MAFS and still no change, same problem. Starts fine then revs up to 2500 or 3000rpm idle stabilizes,...then turns off. I can keep it on w/ my foot on the gas, but wont go past 3k. when i floor it it pulses from 2-3k and misfires/backfires-dont know the diff........

Check ECU for Codes
EDIT: Also if It was a MAFS issue you need to reset the ECU to Clear the Fault Codes from it.
went through that myself. I vote MAF 150%.

ecu spitting out fault code 12 and 13 changed the MAF sensor and engine temp sensor out of what im assuming was a running car(since it was sideswipped) @ the j.yard. I am changing the engine temp sensor to a new one tomorrow...Does anyone know what voltage is supposed to be coming out of the MAF plug...also, its a little calcified so im guessing i should change the plug too
your local parts store should have some electric parts cleaner. i forget what the correct name is, but you can get that and clean it.

also i noticed that the oil pressure sensor wire, was snapped off???thinking this might have sum thing to do w/ it....
that sensor is more for informational purposes. the wire being severed doesn't affect the car running. dude clean the connector and change the maf. i had the same exact issue. i did everything you did with changing parts. GO FOR THE MAF! it takes all of 2 mins. to see if it works.

Changed the MAF(3X's w/ 3 seperate mafs)and plug still the same problem..When the ecu is in limp-mode does it have to get reset???If so, how??...ughhh...My battery cable and battery ground look corroded....?Maybe an issue, IDK..??im ready to just take it to a shop...Any one know a good reliable mech. in Whittier???
