Pros and Cons of a 240
OK…I’m trying to base my final decision on whether to get a 98 range 240 equally.
There’s a lot of great points on NC.org:
http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=112863
and I’d want a fair opinion before making this decision or not. So I'd like to hear what’s the Pros, as well as the Cons of having the 240 by those of you who have/had one
Thanks in advance

I’d like to know some positives of the 240 and any major negatives involved with a engine swapped 1997-1998
I know the 240 is a reliable car, but how is it with an engine swap or is it better without.
How does it hold up in the long run, thanks

Let me see if I can unscramble your engrish...
You want to know how reliable a 240SX with an SR20DET is?

Pros..
Rear wheel drive.
Forums to help keep them running.
Great styling, fun to drive, decent insurance prices compared to Corvettes or exotics.
Decent resale value (for now)
Widespread aftermarket support.
Cons..
Drifting craze results in a lot of 240SX's being mis-treated and abused. Often raced, chassis becomes weakened, drivetrain parts prematurely worn resulting in expensive upkeep.
1998's are rare and expensive.
Engine swaps done in a hurry, not enough attention to small details.
240SX's with swaps do not have matching numbers and are illegal in some states to use on public highways
Rust with cars not cared for.
Takes very little exterior damage to "total" a 240SX. Mine has cosmetic damage and very little structure damage from an accident, will cost over 5K to repair.
Most swaps encompass an engine with lower mileage so this can be a good thing. Their are some 240SX's that have been cared for by "little old ladies" or have been adult driven but as of late, many 240SX owners want to try their hand at racing, drifting, modding, swaps, all kinds of things that you must expect with a used car that can seriously shorten its life and the funtionallity of the car as a daily driver. I would look toward a 97 since it will be less expensive to buy and not as rare as a 98. Only a very few thousand 98 were ever imported to the States.
240SX's are a dying breed. I like to think that their will be some well cared for stock or closely kept to stock examples in the coming years but when they all die out (sooner than later due to the drifting, etc) then we will have the G35 coupe as the 240SX replacement.
It is just a car...I am not saying it is wrong to swap or mod the 240SX...on the contrary, some mighty fine things can be done to a 240SX to improve them in all areas...I would like to think that those who buy them...take care of them to keep them...rather than just tear them up for fun. Very few cars ever made have the balance of overall funtionallity, comfort, drivability, performance and economy of the 240SX.
Finding a low milage nice example 240SX is getting harder.
You have to ask yourself...why would you want a 240SX, as a daily driver or a toy or both?
FOr the money of a 98 240SX you can get a mighty fine Corvette if you are willing to pay for the insurance that will overall eat the 240SX's lunch in the performace arena without any mods. Making a 240SX into a vette type performance machine will end up costing more in the long run and now that 240SX's are (in some areas) being watched like a hawk by the local and state authorities (notice all the folks getting tickets on these forums) then maybe a vette may be a wiser investment. You certainly can get your money back out of a vette anytime.

Thanks bro
Basically I’ve considered many options, and the 240 keeps being the best alternative if I ever did change rides.
After about only a month of searching through Car WebPages, I’m beginning to understand just how rare a 98 with decent mileage/good condition/correct owner is/would to find. I’ve still got a lot of things to factor in such as Insurance, How far I would want to Mod it, Reliability, General Maintenance, etc. etc.
I’m in no rush to get one and am patiently waiting for the one that would best fit my situation if it ever comes along.
I appreciate your comments and I know there’s much more research I need to do beforehand

i read the thread at NC and cant believe a couple comments that are being made...
especially by this fool:
Sirk_2
They are extreamly unreliable just as any vehical w/ a motorswap. Think about it, you have completely changed what the car is meant to do from the factory; you've completely screwed up the cars geometry due to the weight difference of the engine; you have a much much older car; and the limited slip would probably own you into a curb or light pole light it did to a friend of mines.
fucking dumbass....
the SR20det CAME from FACTORY like that in JAPAN, and did for 5 years in S14 models....the logic would actually apply backwards as the U.S. got the KA motor (swap) instead of the Japanese factory SR20det
i wanted to register just to set this straight, but im too lazy to...maybe you can post that for me :p

Don’t want to start a Forum War or anything of that sort.
I know Celica members are more knowledgeably about their rides and the 240 members are more knowledgably about their rides.
I’m sure Sirk_2 was giving his honest opinion in regards to his experience with them.
Thanks again for the information and I’ll keeping on learning and searching. :bigok:

I THINK: Not all states consider all motor swaps illegal. CA is probably the strictest state on cars. Other states have little or no emissions laws, and I'm just guessing that they don't care about swaps as well. If anyone knows differently, please tell it.

Florida does not care. When you register your vehicle, all they want to know is that you have the required insurance and a vin number. No inspections, no checking motors or exaust pipes and no matching of numbers. If you want to put a viper engine in a Geo...you can go right ahead so long as you obey the traffic laws and noise requirements.
DOT (feds) only check for overweight or improperly loaded and equipped OTR trucks of over 10000GVW.
The feds leave it up to indivigual states and local ordinances and requirements. Even though it is a federal regulation...enforcement is up to the states and local authorities.
Alabama, Mississippi, no problems.

Did you know we cant have tint on any windows other than the rear (rear windshiled, rear doors)?!

pros : handling, looks, rarity, FR, price
cons : acceleration (KA), rarity, FR, condition
alot of 240s have been crashed b/c of the rwd. its hard to find one in decent condition. FR can be good or bad depending on how well you can drive and/or adjust from FF or AWD. with a KA24DE its damn slow in a straight line... i have a hard time keeping up with traffic from red lights if i shift at 2.5k lol... besides that... the interior build quality is questionable... weird little rattles and noises appear everywhere. body panels are cracked or damaged or scuffed easily. the ride, even stock, is very uncomfortable. the interior noise level, stock, is very loud. the rear seats are all but useless. it's a pain in the ass to get out of the car. i personally have all sorts of mechanical gremlins.
on the upside, the motor is strong (even at 110k), the tranny is ok... only 100 for a replacement so i'm not complaining. it may have little problems but i'm not worried about it breaking down. the car can take turns like all hell... even on crap suspension pieces. the exterior isn't that attractive anymore but i don't really a sh*t how it looks as long as there's no rust. btw the insurance isn't an issue at all... its considered a compact car isntead of a sports car. yay.

If you go with a 240 and swap an SR in good luck getting plates. An SR engine swap isnt technically "street legal" in most parts of Colorado. If you live in a county that doesnt require emissions testing you would be fine, but if you live in Denver itself you would be pretty much screwed. I am just hoping i get my emissions test done by someone who is either cool, or just to lazy to care.
misnomer

Wow, do 240s have a reputation for being unreliable? Anybody know where this stems from? My baby is still strong with 166k miles, getting a little squeaky, but squeaks add character :-)
Can't speak for SR reliability, simply because most SR swaps haven't been driven for nearly as long as the KAs have. It's a damn fine automobile, otherwise I wouldn't drive one :P
What other cars were you looking at?

i think 240's are reliable if u spend the money on them.....if your poor like me and cant afford to replace a broken part for like 2-3 weeks then something else breaks because of it....im constantly working on my car....i love that about it though....its a high performance car....so i do high maintence....some people with twice the mods as me do half the work....it all depends on the situation.....id recomend getting one....but if your the type of person to get it , then realize its not perfect and sell it....dont waste your time....if you like your current ride keep it....if your sick of it then change cars

I'm sick of this, I wish the 240sx stayed in it's, "what’s a 240?" days.
-First off about the other forum, how many of those people have owned anything else?
-Second, out of all the people there like half either wanted to sell it or turn it into a daily driver, (like it wasn't before) I have only met a few 240 owner's that would give up their car. I like to think that 240 people are die-hard.
-Third I've only met one unreliable 240 and it was owner error (pizza delivery in a $600 s13). The owner never put any money into it just kept it running until he drifted into a curb, and then he gave up and bought a FC. I crashed my car and I fixed out of my own pocket, he just pussed out.
IMO, you should look into getting something newer and safer. Your either going to kill someone, yourself, or the car. If you don't do that, then more power to you.
I think for the most part the pros and cons have been covered.
As far as reliability, goes my 95 has 199,567 miles on it and runs fine, leeks a little oil, but starts and runs everyday.
I’m sorry if you think I’m flaming you, I’m not I just hate coming here and seeing once a day someone wanting/thinking about getting a 240. A car that would have never even been considered if it weren’t for drifting.

Most people are mistaking the ability to register a car or lack of inspections overriding FEDERAL emissions laws.
The SR20DET is absolutely illegal for a street car in all the US. Florida included. Whether or not you get caught is a whole different matter, as is whether they inspect the car prior to registration. I have known people that have disabled air bags, switched motors, etc that have been denied insurance claims. I have known of one guy that was cited for tapering with emissions devices. Now I know ALOT of people running illegal cars...most never get caught.
Also engine swaps are not only illegal based on emissions....there is a crash component in that that is cerification the powerplant is not hazardous in an accident.

Do you guys really think you are elite because you drive a 240sx??
so gay, he can buy whatever he wants, he has more cash than most of you broke posers.
I like my 240, its a fun car, but its just a car, there are tons of decent cars out there, its not like its God's gift to the world, a 240 (motor swap or not) doesn't fuck you in the ass with a reacharound while you drive.
"knowledgeably" is not a word, and if you use the search feature on this site with the string 'pros and cons' im sure you would get lots of great advice that has been talked about beforex100!

fact: celica is a girls car
fact: celica gts is a better girls car, almost borderline with guy's girl's car.
fact: anyone who asks for pro's and con's is being spoonfed, they cant research for themselves. they should buy a simple car where thinking is not involved, such as a civic or nissan 200sx (usdm not euro market!)
so basically you want us to have a debate in your honor? nah, i think you should stay as far from every 240SX as humanly possible cause, quite frankly, you belong in a civic or a POS "new" celica.
While I agree in your assessment that this guy is just a bandwagon-boy that wants to be "dorifto-king" like half the other toolboxes with 240s... I disagree about the new Celica being a POS... its more reliable than any Nissan made right now and has a higher rating than prolly any Nissan made within the last 15 years... hardly a POS...
its a girl car, yes... and its FWD, yes... but its not a POS...
