View Full Version : Heavy Knocking after 5 lug swap

I had to brake hard today for a traffic light and noticed heavy knocking coming from my front right.
I have an s13 and bought the Attain 5lug hubs for the front. I also upgraded my brake rotors to slotted and drilled BREMBOs.
When I brake hard there is a heavy knocking sound from the right side. The heavier I brake the louder teh knocking. Is this because of the slotted rotors? Is this ok? or is this a problem?
Have you guys had this problem?
Thanks

pull the wheel and make sure everything is tight.

ok, I'll try that. I have a feeling I didn't push the hub in all the way.
So you guys dont' think its a bad bearing? If its just tightening things up, then that is a good thing. I'll do that now.
Thanks.

bearings grind, not knock.
I could go for some heavy knocking right about now...

I re-torqued all the bolts, and this time I torqued things to the high end, and also torqued the lug nuts to 85 this time.
I still have the problem. Are there difference between ABS and non-ABS rotors? Right now, it feels like my front right wheel has ABS
The bearings seem fine, compard to the old one. I dont' know what else it can be.

Does your car have ABS? If so it may be a bad sensor.
Is it a regular knock? Is it a knock or a thump? What does it sound like? Does it only happen when you step on the brakes? Did you put the rotor on the right way(it can make a difference)? Are there any other noises associated with the noise you are hearing? Try this: get that wheel off ther ground, grab it at the left and right side and pull it side to side like you are trying to turn it. But only just a little bit. dont try to turn the wheel, just check for play. Then grab at top and bottom and shake it again the same way. If it moves either way you have a problem.
If that doesn't work, CHECK THE OTHER WHEELS.

my car does not have ABS.
It is a deep knock. It only happens when I step on the brakes. There are no other noises associated with the noise I'm hearing.
I'm going to mount te 4lug hubs and rotors back on and take it for a test drive and see if hte noise is gone. I'm gonna try to isolate the problem and figure out exactly what is wrong.
I will record a video of the sound, and take pictures of the rotor, I'm pretty sure I mounted it correctly.
Thanks for the tips.

big mike - do you really know what yoru talking about? What you just explained to him would be a tie rod concern or a bad suspension bushing, which would have been consistant with the old brake setup.
ABS rotors have a rigged sproket on the inside, there should be no probelm there with a knocking, nor would this be a result from the rotors.
Are these new hubs or are these adapter?
Adapter have whats called hub lock, where the drilled holes for the adapter knock against the stud (#1 reason not to use adapters)
But you said you have the hubs themselves, so its not going to be that. Do me a favor, slam the brakes in reverse and report. This my tell may something.

ok, have you guys heard of the 5to4 lug conversion?:D
Well, I just convert my front right side back to 4lugs, and put hte 4lug rotor back on it, and the torqued everything and took it out for a test drive, and there are no more knocks, so I know for sure that it is the right side that is the problem.
I tried moving the wheel around, it doesn't move, so I thinkt he hubs are alright, its just the rotors.

These are new hubs from Attain.
I took a video with my digicam, shitty quality specially since its at night, but it captures the sound.
weirdstyles, what would slamming it in reverse tell me? that I have the rotors backwards? But its only the right side, the left side is completely ok, not only that, but I have proved this buy switching the right side back to 4lug and the problem was gone. I jsut swapped the 5lug back and took a vid, take a look
thanks for all the help guys. It definitely doesn't sound right. The noise only comes when I brake hard ( doesn't have to be very hard).
http://students.washington.edu/juarez/5lugnoise.zip <- I took it off the net.
Tomorrow, I'm going to swap the left and right rotors to see if the problem switches sides.
Thanks.

yes, head of the 5 lug swap.
Think you just need to get a new hub.

if (bouncing pedal) {
get new rotors;
} else {
get new hub;
}

I talked to my Dad last night and he told me that I may have put the brakes back on it incorrectly.
The new rotors are a little bit thicker than the old ones, so maybe i didnt' align the pads correctly when i shoved them on to the new rotors.
I'm gonna check on it. Also, I'm going to switch the rotors and see if it switches sides.
I definitely hope its not a hubs issue, I just bought those, they are brand new from raretrick.com

It's fixed!!! Turns out the current brake pads wore out a little different.....so they are not perfectly flat, and I think i didnt' place them back correctly, so when I brake hard, part of the pad is digging intot hte slots and bouncing back.
I took it out for a test and the problem is gone as far as my ear can tell.
Thanks for all the help everybody.
FINALLY, my 5lug conversion is complete. I'll post up some pics later, I think the car looks a lot better now.
