Im in the middle of a 5 speed swap on my 1990 240. I have the clutch and flywheel in and everything and i am ready to put the tranny back on. this is my first clutch install so, I am worried about messing up the pressure plate and clutch plate when sliding the tranny in. I have read somewhere that it is easier to turn the trans upside down before putting it in. i also have my motor tilted back.. any advice on getting the tranny in without screwing anything up?

Upside down, and backwards...
Works every time.

i usually stick it on turned 90 degrees clockwise. have the engine tilted back as far as it can go, both motor mounts loosened a LOT. jack up the tranny on the back end, and dead lift the front end until its about where it needs to be. slide the trans on slowly, making sure the teeth line up in the clutch disk. Keep inserting, until you clear the firewall, twist 90 degrees c-clockwise, and make sure the dowel pins in the engine fit into the holes in the tranny.

takes me about 10 minutes to get it on, once the clutch has been installed.

did you use the clutch alignment tool when installing the disk?

yes i did use the alignment tool. I had to replace both motor mounts so those are alredy loose. so it should go in smoothly.

put the part where the starter goes face down. Then when you get the trans in, rotate it into the correct position. Done it countless times.

if this is your first time and there's no one there who's done it before to help you, it most likely will not go in smoothly on the first couple tries, it might but dont get discourage if it doesnt and keep at it cuz it gets easier with experience. a little tip, align the clutch disk properly or you will have a hard time. learned that the hard way.

I take off the 4 bolts holding front cross-member, then everything drops down 2 inches, if you want disconnect steering shaft which is only 1 bolt and you can drop it down about 7 inches. Makes everything so easy and smooth.
