View Full Version : best place to buy JDM motors?
I'm thinking about getting a rb20, unsure of where to buy it from.
Ive heard great things about zerolift, and bad stuff about jdm online.
Any good places I should know about?

First, don't buy an rb20...
Second.... If you do, go with zerolift.
Why not, my buddys got one in his coupe and I LOVE IT, and my friends sr black top sucks balws compaired to it.

Haha I have the complete opposite story. My friend sold his RB to get an SR setup similar to mine.. Also, it's way easier to find parts for an SR compared to an RB. Again, that's just my personal experience. To each their own.
Ps. If you do decide on buying an RB, I have a 3 inch downpipe for sale, let me know if you want it! You're gonna need it ;)
true, how much?
and you cant say a sr sounds better than a rb!
is jdmtigerjapanese.com anygood? I thinking about getting a front clip....but idk

Offer me a price, I'll consider anything!
That was the only thing I liked about an rb, the inline 6!
Never had any experience with that shop, but zerolift's an advertiser here and has many customers on this forum to back them up.
I'll see what I can do.
also better torque curve. more weight, but EH. always wanted a rb powered 240 :D
I might give them a call ,and i'll be calling up zerolift too.
The rb20 can use the stock 5spd drive shaft correct?

Ever looked into a 1jz or a RB25? Good power plants and fun as a mofo to drive/rid along in
I hate the 1jz and 2jz,
and rb25 requires so much extra crap its retarded.

Don't order from these guys. we bought a 1jz from them and it was complete crap. Didn't have everything, wiring was hacked all to hell, and the motor needed to be fully rebuilt. We just bought a 1jz from zerolift and its great. I say zerolift for sure.

I'll just toss in another vote for Zerolift.
Buying an RB20 is stupid at best. Parts are hard to find, it's heavy and long compared to an SR and they're just weird.
Sound cool though, but so do RB25's and 1J's. Never really got the reason to swap an RB20 into anything.

if you want just want a rb for the sound , get a 1j , they have great power stock and a lot more room to work with. They're also relativley cheap probably just as much as rb20's and you still need custom mounts and etc.. id go with a 1j. But go with zerolift for motors anyways.

EliteJDM is also pretty awesome. Nick is a great dude and driver.
Only thing is, I don't THINK he stocks RB20's very often. Usually he's pretty much an SR guy, but I have seen a few RB25's float through his warehouse.

Staying on topic, for Zerolift & EliteJDM, do they provide proof of compression tests or proof that the motor is in running condition? Or is it more of a "you give me the money, good luck" type of deals?

I got an RB20 from Zerolift last winter. Cleanest one I've seen, and they supplied compression numbers. Great staff as well.
Granted, I live closer to Ohio than you do, but even with shipping it was dirt cheap.

JEI in VA is a pretty good place. Good deals too, ive bought a couple motors from them.
and whats wrong with RB20s? its just as hard to find 25 and 26 parts so its not that different. they also rev higher and get waayy better gas mileage
but if i were to go with a 1JZ, itd be a single turbo VVT-i one :fruit:

How do u hate a 1/2 jz unless u just had bad luck with one..and if you dont have high hp goals and rb20 is straight..i've driven my friends with an hks gt25 turbo its a great balance of power u can use the extra money u'll save from an rb25 or 2jz swap for some power upgrades..n +1 for zerolift

I mean... the RB20 is cheap as shit, doesn't have rocker arms, and is pretty stout stock block. You can make cheap power out of it, if you can live with it only being 2 liters for being such a boat anchor.

This! Dewey is the man. Great guy with excellent parts and engines. Travels to Japan yearly to hand pick parts and motors for his customers back here in the USA. Most of the local drift guys around the St Louis metro area get there motors from him. Def the go to guy.
Idk there pirces suck, I'm sure i'm going with zerolift.

What exactly does the rb25 require that the 20 doesnt other than a drive shaft? I have personaly had both and done both the swaps myself and for the few hundred dollars more you get a newer motor with vct and .5L more for the same amount of work its a no brainer man.

I'm also vouching for Dewey. His motors are top notch. Most of the guys in town who do swaps get theirs from Dewey and they're great, whether it be an at-home install or having Omar from Nocturnal Motorworks install, can't go wrong with JDMHookup!

Just received my s14 sr20det from jdmenginedepot. Gave it to me 2192.00 shipped to my house and came in three days. Came with an upgraded hks gt28 turbo, nismo clutch and flywheel, s15 injectors and what's seems to be a tuned ecu already. Motor was absolutely flawless. Opened valve cover looks brand new not a hint of wear. Just my story guess I lucked up some ppl had bad luck with them. My .02 .

I bought my S13 SR from Nick. Only cost me $2,300. Definitely not $3200.
$2300 included EVERYTHING for a complete swap. Including oem air box... Mint as fuck!
He even started up the engine and let it run for me before I purchased it..
Installed.
