LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles may be doing away with its red light cameras, but you still have to pay those fines if you've already been caught.

The city council is going after about 50,000 drivers who have yet to pay their red light tickets.

The panel voted to continue paying a contractor to track down those violators, and the Los Angeles Police Department will use the contractor's database to collect outstanding fines.

The city council voted to end its red light program on July 31 because of concerns over the safety benefits and the almost $500 price of tickets.

I agree, when it's just a lack of attention or carelessness...and a cop witnesses it, and writes a ticket. BUT...

How about when they were ticketed by a redlight camera, at an intersection where the DOT says needs a 4-second-long yellow light...but the camera manufacturer/leasing company mandates a 3.2-second-long yellow? Thereby increasing fines by 50%.

AND, the camera companies keep 70% of the cash generated by the cameras.

Add to that, the numerous studies that show the cameras made intersections LESS safe (rear-ending accidents up by a huge number, by drivers stopping short at the last minute)...

And the whole thing is BULLSHIT.

Red-light runners suck...but any ticket issued by a redlight camera should be shredded. LA should give up on this. They got rid of the cameras and should forget about these fines.

Exactly, I've seen people stop at green lights because they are so worried about getting flashed by the camera or people who don't even pull up far enough for the sensors to detect that anyone is waiting for a light. Too many stupid people out there.

Rarely did the tickets come from anyone actually running a red.
Lotta turn lane violations, waiting for bums and wheel chairs to get out of the crosswalk so you can clear the intersection.
Ive seen those things flash at so much BS.

im ok with the red light cams. say some douche is trying to get home to catch a show and thinks its ok to run a red if he doesnt see anybody, but he stops because he remembers theres a red light cam. just as he comes to a halt, he sees a kid crossing the street in the dark right where he would've been if he hadnt stopped.

When was the last time anyone saw someone run a red on purpose??


We should get the stats on those and see what the tickets are.

And since its legal for two cars to finish their left on the yellow here in SoCal, but everyone is always finishing crossing on the yellow, you get two cars making lefts on reds, and those cameras go off.

Almost exclusivly the case when i see em.

I can guarantee you they did not "run" the red light in the way you are thinking.

We have them here too.

The people I know that have gotten them has been because they "rolled" through the red light on a right turn. This means failure to make a complete stop, count to 5 (yes, that is part of the FL law) and then turn.

Even if you make a complete stop and only wait 1-2 seconds you'll get a ticket.

Its complete BS.
