Driving on Open Diff VS. 2 Way L.S.D in the snow

i get shiet for traction when drivin in the snow on my OPEN DIFF.

how much better or if better will a 2-way KAaz LSD help me when

it snows like crazy?

i wouldnt use a 2 way in the snow, personally

in the rain its bad enough

it pushes, it locks up fast and it is easy to spin tires

i would use a VLSD in the snow, but that's just me.......

a 2-way equipped car is very ass happy in the rain, i can't imagine what it'd be like in the snow!!

so basically we're saying 2-ways and snow DON'T mix.

Exactly how fast does it lock up? Will it lock up under normal, and even gentle driving in the snow?

mine locks up SUPER fast.

in the rain its basically full lock all day

yup mine too...locks at any and all speeds...anytime i turn i have to be aware of how much gas i am giving it or the the back end will swing out..fun yes, but not for the inexperienced..

correct me if I'm wrong, since I don't use a clutch type LSD, but can't you adjust the LSD by removing clutch packs or something to make engagement a little "softer?"

yes but that requires removal of the lsd and disassembling it (lots of work)

my nismo is by removing a axle and changing torque.

either way, its a hour - 4 or so hours of work.

it will still engage VERY fast though, and basically be at full lock all day in the rain/snow

i would think your best bet is snow tires

Where in NC are you at?

I tend to agree....a nice set of snow friendly tires goes a long way....not only will it help in the snowy corners, but it will help you grab traction when braking (especially if you dont have ABS).

but yeah.. RWD, FWD, AWD.. doesnt matter what you have, you'll be stuck spinning all your drive wheels at some point (i.e. SUVs, 4x4's slidin' around and falling into ditches). Snow tires is the way to go...

my factory vlsd is good in the snow compared to cars with open diffs

i saw a truck beside me, one tire on ice one on bare pavement. The one on ice spun and spun and the other one stayed planted and he went nowhere. My car in the same situation will spin the one on ice once or twice and then it engages the other side.

still lousy in the snow takin off tho

I second snow or at least snow friendly tires.
I only have an open diff right now, but I bought fresh mud and snow rated BFG touring TA's for winter since they are all seasons and I didn't have a lot of cash, and I'm been surprised at their traction in snow.
if you get a lot of ice or snow and have to drive on it, a set of blizzacks is a good investment.

I've have a spec V, and with the helical lsd, it didnt seem to break traction excessively. Now I realize that the 240 is rwd, but with a gear type, such as a quaife lsd, it would be easier to maintain stability as opposed to a clutch type with harsher engagement correct?

oh man, I was driving from Sacramento to Modesto (1 hour drive) and about five minutes after getting on the highway, it started to pour like crazy. I had been sliding around and didn't check the wear on my rear tires. All of a sudden my car starts shimming side to side. I was driving the car at an angle most of the time, and it was scarier than fucK! I have a JDM vlsd, and this thing is so right side biased, but when it did kick in, the car would switch to the left almost instantly. I can't imagine how hard it would be to drive a 2 way in the rain!:hammer:

my suggestion, as has been suggested earlier in this thread, would be to get yourself a set of snow tires for the rear. i run those and have never had a problem getting stuck. the snow tires will definitely get you all that traction you need. i would think an diff would help if you get stuck, but i've done fine on open diff + snow tires.

fellow north carolinian here, nismo clutch type LSD, and SR. let me tell you... it sucks. especially since all we get is ice.. remember the big storm last year? yeah that blew. took 20 minutes of prayer countersteering and throttle manipulation to bet up the hill just to leave the damn office. another 3 hours for a 20 mile trip to get home. I was not amused. Moms better not plan on going anywhere if the weather turns like that again this year cause Im jacking the CRV :axe:
