Ok today it was wet out from rain and i said let me see if i can do this.I was going down a little hill got a little flatter, and i hit the gas a little more and smashed the brake and turned the Wheel.I went side was for about 10-15 ft and i felt and saw my car tilt and thought i am going to flip so i hit the gas and turned staight again.and pulled out and my heart was pounding.

that's nothing, when i had my tercel, back in the days, i was trying to hit 100 on a empty road infront of my house (that's before i know that i needed to shift at high rpm, that's why it took me a while...) and then, i realized i needed to take a left turn to get to my street, i turned at about 60, and i hit the left turn lane mark, since the paint on the road has less traction than the road itself i was sent hurdling 80-100 feet on my side (i'm not over exagerating, i slide on my side all the way from the beginning of the left turn lane and stopped just in place that i no longer needed to turn left), so yah. after that i felt like i was the luckiest man alive, 'cause another car was on the oncoming trafic, he dogged me and i didn't hit him...

Uhh, if you are drifting and sideways, then you should be on the gas. Gas makes you lose traction, not gain it...

Tru, but you can't pull out of a drift while brakeing or neutral.

Hmmm...this is the first time for myself to hear of a 240 ALMOST turning over..thought it was hard for a 240 to turn over..or I dont know anything..

I was scared and i have an auto and no suspension work at all but i was going down a hill so i did not want to take that chance. But i was only doing 60mph and when i did it i was like cool but then the car tilted and i was like no way and i hit the gas and brake and turned out of it.I may try again later but man that was a rush.

I don't mean to be a [email protected]$% but isn't drifting a controlled manuever where the car slides but is maintained through pedal response not simply when the car slides in any direction?? Maybe I'm wrong?

... since when does drifting mean smashing on the brake? as long as I have been drifting I haven't smashed on my brake... unless you mean the hand brake... but with a 240 you don't need to use the hand brake, especially in the rain... sorry to burst your bubble...

you wanna drift, do like this... drive to the curve, heel-toe shift down to 2nd, turn away from the curve, then hard into it, slam on the gas... KEEP BOTH HANDS ON THE WHEEL, turn the wheel away from the curve, then straighten out, and don't kill anyone but yourself... once you've done this then you can post that you "did your first drift"

oh, and you don't need to wait for the rain

never give up, and don't be afraid

(start out in a parking lot till you get it man, your gunna kill someone)

Brake what???

Save some money, buy some suspension products, and make an attempt at drifting on dry pavement, without taking your foot off the accelerator. Empty parking lots work.

Hey dude, don't worry about the car flipping over. It won't. I can do e brake 180's on pavement with my truck and it doesn't even come close to flipping, and it has shit poor stability and a little higher center of gravity.

Sounds more like uncontrolled skidding
Still, go over in your mind how you recovered and learn something from it. Controlled drift is easier than just recovery actions, you dont have the 'oh shit!' factor to startle you.

On braking and drift theres a few techniques to it, mostly on hairpins and really hard corners. Its hard to explain without being in the car but a good one that will help you turn at speed is a 'Shift lock'
Accellerate to the corner at speed- 3rd gear, accelerate through the first quarter of the bend, brake hard breifly to bring the nose down and get the back end out- half a second at most, shift down to second and keep the power on at 3/4-full throttle through the last half of the corner.
As you come out on the straight it should be going sideways nicely in a powerslide and controllable, if your losing control or getting a bad wobble take your foot off the gas and the rear should grip down nicely giving you time to straighten and gain control.

Its different in the wet though, hard breaking just means 4 wheel drift and Im not sure if your ready for that!

01-24-2002, 05:08 AM
BEISSEN you fool, you just got advice from a GIRL. Fuck, must I shove my foot any further up your ass? :)

You were in the RAIN, hence the road was WET. You did not drift, you just lost control. What you need to do is practice more. What you DONT need to do right now, is aimlessly spend money on suspension when I am sure yours is fine until you start hitting higher mileage. You have an S14 right? How many miles do you have? Besides, its only a little body roll.. its nothing unbearable. I say you upgrade suspension after getting more comfortable with what you've got.

Man, I've got an auto too but shit, atleast I drive the #### out of it. I wish some of you fuckers lived closer, I'de open up a "how to REALLY drive an auto" school. :) Dont get me wrong, I love stick and have a 5-speed in my garage just waiting to be installed.. but I still like my auto.

Ok old s13 but look if it was an out of control skid that would put me going at an angle right,"could be wrong"but i was completly sideways and my tires were spinning"until the open diff kicked in"but when i was going ok its body roll cool.I hit the e-brake and the gas and turned out of the "drift" and went staight when i got out there was a ton of smoke and smelled like burned rubber. But yeah I do have an s14 a 97 with 62500 miles on it.But don't got to be so harsh old s13,this is an area to learn so what a girl tells me what i did wrong but does anyone know for sure "NO"cus you werent there but i listen. Thanks for the advice.

I have been practicing on snow. The whole downshift to get a quiick lock, and the ass out, then punch the gas to keep the whole thing sliding sidways and pull out through the turn, haven't worked on the rain yet... but you know.. snow is easier right now, especially on the tranny for the quick lock.

ebrake and gas at teh same time is bad news unless your trying to kill your rear breaks... u know your car is rear wheel drive right? ebrake plus gas cancels each other out bro. sorry if ur post isn't really what u ment, i just read it that way good luck with your future drifitng, these people here know what they r talking about, take a look at ol 13's lil animation thats a lil dry pavement drift. Try something like that... and for got sakes.. in the rain, do it at slower speeds... 60mph in the rain downhill = pos desaster if you don't know your car really well. I've driving my car for months and woudl not attempt that at 60 in wet weather. It is jsut too unpredictable.

Why is it that we always have to go through this shiot? Drift or Slide? Sliding Drift? Drifting Slide? Outta control turn? Look, the drift is a controlled manuever (as quoted earlier) using all of your reflexes; wheel movement to control over/understeer and pedal control gas & clutch.

Regardless, guys if the little fella thinks he's doing a drift let him. If he goes off a hill or crashes he can blame it on his drift, cough* slide cough*....Have fun sliding.......LMFAO.

01-24-2002, 11:57 AM
BEISSEN> Nah man, I was just playing around with you. Listen, I think its okay to have fun and I didnt intend my message to be harsh or anything.. BUT, there's just too much hype on words like "JDM" or "drift" when most people arent too comfortable with what they are doing (or trying to do). If your heart is beating after an episode like that, then I would suspect that you're still new to this style of driving and would suggest more practice.. thats all. I wasnt trying to kick you in the ass that hard, just a "while we're walking kick you with the back of my foot" junior high kick. You guys remember that, right? :)

S13 girl> There's nothing wrong with getting advice from girls, as long as its on stuff like sewing and cooking. muahaha bad bad bad.. okay, i'm kidding again. :) Hey its all good, some girls are good at cooking.. others are good at drifting. I give credit to people when its due. I still think driving is more of a "mans thing" but I am not that narrow-minded to think its only for guys. I know there are a lot of girls that are better drivers than many of the guys I know. Skills are skills, sex has nothing to do with it.

(as long as that sex is on a hood, of course). :)

im probably off topic with what you guys are talking about but i only read upto "whats wrong with getting advice from a girl". anywho i drifted a completely diff. way. what i do is accelarate to about 50mph go wide but turn in before the actual curve begins. let go of the gas and that causes a weight trasnfer to the front and then downshift and floor it to brake the rear tires loose the car will slide pointing the nose into the curve and just turn the wheel the opposite way to control the skid while also modulating the throttle. press gas for more degrees and let go for less.

i'm not a drifter, all i know how to do is get power-on oversteer...but i'll give advice anyway...
when you're learning how to drift, first get donuts, power on oversteer, learn how to control that shit in a parking lot before u do it on hilly, public roads...that way, u learn how to drift before u go up on two wheels, know what i mean? btw, if u havent seen it already, and u have a fast connection, download this www.fxracer.com/videos/drift2/superdrifttechniques.mpg...watch how he feathers the throttle and turns the steering wheel to control the drift, instead of using the throttle to get out of it...also, try two wheel drifts first...hehe

Old_s13: I've done better four wheel drifts in a minivan Anyways, most people would say you're not exactly drifting on a 90 degree street intersection.... the more "die hard" (basically the "I watch too much Initial D and read all about it but am too chicken sh*t to try it) crowd will tell you drifting requires using the throttle to initiate the turn and control the attitude of the car throughout the turn... not just kick the tail out after the turn

So basically.....Yea.. that GIF sucks. Stick it in an .avi and link it then
On a side note:
Really, I'm starting to beleive you can "drift" with an open diff. The basic goal of a drift is to rotate the car before/ through the turn by sliding the car .... and it's possible to do so with an open diff (just impossible to keep it going for an extended amount of time).
At the very least... if my backroad experiences aren't drifting (which I don't really claim them to be) they're pretty #### close.

archangel> harsh is an understatement, I've lost my mind on this forum. :)

aceinhole> oh well, you'de have to be there to enjoy. I had a meet at my shop back then and not only did I have a passenger, but I also had a crew of people watching this silliness. No biggie though, we just pulled a couple minutes of footage since my old tires were slicks and on their way out.

ps: There is an avi in my video section.. its nothing special, just shows me flying around acting like a retard >as usual<. :) If you look at the avi, you will see all 4 wheels sliding.. but its all good. If you ever come to LA I would be more than happy to take some new footage for you. :)
