Check engine light keeps coming on and then shutting Off?!!!!

Hey guys my 1990 dohc has been acting up latley. Just bought the car so dont know the history but latley the Check engine will turn on and off randomly. I will stay on for 10 mins and then be off again when i look.
Was wondering if anyone knew a solution or what i could check without hooking it up to a computer?

Go to advance auto parts, or similar. Have them check your codes.

My car does the same thing.

My cat blew apart and my exhaust leaks.

Once it gets hot enough, code gets thrown.

Happened to me last night..opened it up a little, came on for about 20 minutes then at highway speeds turned off..I'm gonna have to do a tune up on her maybe it'll help out

you will have to turn the screw on the back of the ecu and count the blinks from the led on the back. if you use google you can find what the codes mean.

Oh and aap pep boys nor auto zone will check it since the car is older than a 96..they only check OBDII not OBDI..tried last night, go to a mechanic they will check it for you free of charge from what I believe

so CEL will flash on & off for a while then it turns off...right??

if so, when a CEL flashes like that, comp is detecting a catastrophic failure within the engine...

If it really is random, just check if the diagnostic screw turn to the original position. I had once bought a car which had an erratic engine light, drove it home and about to check the codes, and the previous buyer had the screw in diagnostic mode. I turn it back and she was gone.

Well in my opinion, i thought it was a dirty 02 sensor, but that wasnt the case lol,
and what i also realized that the light came on and off when i would fill up gas, my gas cap is loose and likes to loosen itself here and there and isnt holding the pressure. so check your cap lol
