hey im having a hell of a time getting my 89 240 up and running again i keep replacing one thing and another thing takes a shit on me :unamused:. first the exhaust needed replaced so i could pass emissions and then the starter stopped working so i replaced it and same problem i can hear it engaging with an audible clinking sound (sounds like the gear is hitting the flywheel) and so i changed the ignition coil in the proess i changed the spark plugs and still the same problem.. to save my life i can not figure out what this is and YES i made sure the battery had a full charge and had the starter tested. both of them. im at a loss now. anyone?

Might be the relay. I don't know the technical name for it, but there should be a blue relay up against the bay towards the front, I think it's on the passenger side, yep here's a picture of it. Mine went bad, starter still clicked, gave it a couple of wacks and it started. Try replacing yours before you just bash it with a hammer.

ok just got home a couple days ago and looked and i couldn't find a relay in the front passenger firewall.. the only blue relay i have is the N&P relay which is in the fuse box. perhaps the same? i dunno i looked for relays all over the engine compartment, top and bottom and those were it. any other suggestions would be great. thanks

hit it with something.
Or roll a bit with it in gear, and let the clutch out for a sec to rotate the engine.
Its a dead spot. Very common on single cams... All three of mine had it.

ok so probably should have stated this before.. car is automatic. recently learned that the automatics dont have starter relays and since its automatic can't move it with the clutch in battery seems to be dead now after many efforts to try and turn it over gonna charge it over night and try again tomorrow. cars been like this for a month and some change. been busy with work so i've finally been able to work on it.

Make sure you battery terminal connections are clean (no oxidation and shit) and tight.

WOW! i was just about to post the same thing!!!! my single cam automatic does this!!! i turn the key, and i hear the starter hitting the fly wheel but not "hard enough to spin" i think? (and i just replaced the starter this sunday) and after like 20 turns of the key finally the car starts.
someone please help both of us! haha

neutral safety switch going bad? shift through the gears with the shiftlock. u unplug any wires that are on the back of the fusebox by any chance? thats where the neutral safety switch connects to. theres 2 plugs there that look exactly the same and fit into eachother but they go to different things.
