Hey guys. Just pick up my first 240 a couple of months back. Anyhow I got it for a decent price and needs work = / BUT I get to build it how I want, thats the bonus ( I guess ) lol.
I was driving an 2005 STi and after going on a ride a long at irwindale a while back and doing a drift thing in Vegas I got the bug and wanted to change it up. So I got rid of the STi and now I am a proud owner of an 95 240 sx.
So I have a couple of questions to get me going on my build. The stock KA that is in the car is old and worn, a lot... Anyhow, are the KAs worth building? I don't really want to go SR just because cali sucks and ref tickets are what I try to stay away from. Ive seen plenty of Subie friends get popped and Id like to try to refrain from getting my own.
I was also wondering about a 5 lug swap. What are the benefits? Is it just wheel selection, or is there a mechanical purpose behind it? The car came with wheels, and I am planning on an LSD swap I just didnt know if I should include the lug swap in my build or if its a cosmetic thing. Yeah if you havent noticed I am a :newbie: in the world of 240s.
Anyhow, thanks in advance for any help and Ill be posting pics of my car in the next few days, as well as the progress of the builds I take on.

Honestly, there is alot you have to learn, instead of giving you the whole search noob thing right off the bat I'm going to give you a bit of advice.
The KA is a good platform, as long as you do it right it can be just as capable as an SR, and you are right about ref in California, but if you thought getting pulled in the subie was bad wait until cops see a slammed mid 90's nissan rolling around.
5 lug is primarily for wheel selection as there aren't many good offset wheels that come in 4x114.3 but it also helps with brake upgrades I.E. Z32/skyline brakes and rotors.
That's all you asked so here's a bit to prevent you from being flamed to death and getting a bad vibe about zilvia before being here for long. Every possible topic has probably been discussed through and through here, there are plenty of AWESOME writeups and technical articles, you just have to use the SEARCH bar up there, if you don't find it with your first search try mixing the words up or using proper terminology. Do what most of these guys should be doing and LURK for a while, learn everything you can before hand that way you aren't surprised when you get a timing chain rattle, or something along those lines that comes up almost every day, and oh yeah
Welcome to Zilvia

i'm going to say 80% of the reason you're not getting ripped up yet is because you can spell properly.

Welcome to Zilvia! Typical problems with the KA are timing chin guides which are an easy fix and electrical problems. As one of my old buddies use to say "Nissan all wire no power". The KA is a great platform and now there is a ton of aftermarket support for it. Once it is properly rebuilt and with some head work it can easily walk all over a SR. Perks with the SR are that it has an ENDLESS amount of aftermaket support compared to the KA's. The SR also tends to be much more rev happy in stock form. I would recomend buying a second KA/SR/LS or whatever platform you want to go with to build on a stand in the garage and keep the stock KA in the car now. That way if you ever have problems with the built motor you will still have a running motor.

I would personally go LS swap with all the emissions shit and get it it BAR'd. You won't ever have to worry about smog or your shit getting popped.
