The other day my power steering belt broke. I was driveing and it started making a high pitch squeel(sp) noise started smoking and I pulled over to check and my power steering belt looked like it melted on the power steering pulley.

So my first ? is. I can't spin the power steering pulling, does that mean it's frozer up and I need to replace my powersteering? Or is it not suoppesed to be able to be spun and If I put the new belt on that will drive it.

Second, putting the new belt on I can't figure out which bolt to loosen to create the slack to put the new belt on. My Chilton book is not very clear or I'm not understanding it correctly.

So, do I need a new power steering thingy or just replace the belt. Sorry in advance for my ignorence on this subject.

Sounds like your power steering pump is gone! With the belt off, the pulley should spin freely. What kind of fluid did you use? Remember to use ATF and not regular power steering fluid.

hey thanx for the help. I looked into a pump and It's about $180. Oh well. Hopefully I can fix it this week.

Note: Althought it seems the route of all evils is your p/s pulley/pump be sure to look at the other pulleys to make sure their not wobbeling or what have you.

I dont feel like running out in the snow to look if its just P/s to Crank but if theres any other pulleys involved; that stress may have damaged other pulleys. Also keep an eye on your rack; if it was deprived for too long you could have caused damage.

weirdstyles what do you mean by rack?

Also the belt goes around the crank pulley and a "dummy" pulley, which does spin freely.

Thanx again for the help guys.

ok, wasnt sure about the belt routing but in that case your ok with the other pulleys.

Rack as in your steering rack. Lack of fluid can cause exsessive wear on the rack. Feel out your steering after you get the new pump in there, check for leaks etc.

Ok just one more question Weirdstyles. When putting on the new belt, were is the tensioner bolt to loosen one of the pulleys to create the slack to get the belt around all the pulleys? Keep in mind I have a 90 KA24E.

Thanx again

If the KA24E is anything like the DE, the tensioner is on the PS pump's pulley; there should be one "locking" bolt on the face of the pulley, and the actual tensioning/releaseing bolt just behind (closer to the firewall) the face of the ps pulley... loosen the lock bolt before loosening the tensioner.

Keep in mind though that I work on a DE... the two should be at least a little similar... good luck!
