i was in a car accident with my 96 240sx. that i have done alot of work to. and what im being told by people is that they are going to total my car from the demage. need passenger door and a new rear quarter panel. thank god my jdm kouki front end wasnt touched. they are telling me that insurance companys only pay for what the blue book is on the car. so what i need to know is what about all the money i have put into my car like sr swap, jdm front end conversion and stuff like that. please help if anyone have been in the same issue. all the stuff i have on the car is either a few month old or less then six old because i only owned the 240 for about a year. and also my car exterior is different colors because i was getting my car ready to be painted at the end of next month but now this happens. thanks for any help

Not sure if laws have changed, but I know people who had wrecks and got reimbursed for the newer parts they had bought for it within the last six months or year. I think you have to just have the receipts for the parts and talk to your insurance company. Don't hold me to it, but I know it has happened.

if you where hit most likely they are gonna try and repair it, but what they look at is the car period,
they see a 1990's japanese sports car, with a shit load of miles,
1989-1993 240sx w/150,000 miles+/- aprox $1300
1994-1996 240sx w/150,000 miles+/- aprox $2200
1997-1998 240sx w/150,000 miles +/- aprox $4500
we all know we can get parts and do the work or find a friend that can do repairs for us , but no insurance company will let that fly, its a huge liability if they let you repair a car that is not road worthy,
what you can do is prepare yourself, find 3-4 cars in your area within 100 miles with the same or similar modificacions, that are currently for sale, and show them what those cars are going for, see if you can haggle the money your getting, now before you jump at the adjusters throut with that, see what he offers, if he is willing to have the car repaired and how much he is giving you, will he total it and see how much he gives you, will they give you a buy back oppcion, most insurers do it now to aliviate expenses when they take posesion of a vehicule,
right now i would advise you to gather the info on the car street value, and monitor that closely till the insurer replies with an offer, dont say anything that will help him give you less money, just be quiet, good luck man hopefully it goes in your favor

correct me if im wrong, but I dont think the other persons insurance company has the ability to total your car? I thought only your insurance company can total the car...the insurance company of the person that hit you (if it was their fault) should have to pay to repair the car to the state it was prior to getting damaged. Could be wrong tho...

i own a 510 and i had to fight my insurance to not let them total my car, they agreed but i had to show them how a classic 510 looks like and based prices of the car through the forums. basically what you have to get in perspective is : are you going to think of reselling the car in the future, cause a salvage title will drastically lower the value of your car, if you plan to keep your s chassis who really cares about the title, get your ride fixed. If your friend has a shop that's even better the insurance comp will reimburse his work and if he's really cool kick you down w/some ends as well.

whose paying for the book value of the car?
the other person's insurance. leaving them liable to determine the state of the car.

Idk if this helps but I totaled my first 240sx. Insurance was only trying to give me 800 bucks for it. And this is with full coverage. 800 without the car or $600 PLUS my car. I busted out with 10k worth of receipts. Instead of 800 bucks, I got back a check for $5k PLUS my car back. Of course the car was totaled but who cares. I bought a shell for 800, swapped my SR plus everything over, and STILL had around 3k to play with (gave 1k to my dad)

Thats what I'm worried about the other insurance company trying to give me 800 bucks for them to total my car. When I took my car to a body shop the damages where around 2800 just for repairs. But I found someone that will fix it for cheaper then that and have the whole car painted. And don't even have to use the money I saved up for the paint job I was going to put in it next month.

Well I hope you have full coverage and all the receipts ready to show them when they tell you they're only going to give you $800 (just an example), so you can show them how much you've invested.

I. Don't have full coverage on my policy. What does full coverage have to with the other insurance company
