Im looking for a little advice on where to look on my tranny issue.

91 240 hatch
5 speed manual 275k on it not sure of past.

I have owned this car for about 1 year. Never have any tranny issues at all till now. I rebuilt the KA and did nothing to the tranny. Got it back on the road with 1500 miles on the new build and i have a noisy throw out bearing but now i have developed a clunking/knocking sound only when in a gear. Hit the clutch and the knock stops, or just take the car out of gear and it stops. No noise at idle or in neutral. Only when you are in gear and the clutch is out you can hear this clunking. I can be driving 40mph and in neutral with no sounds, put it in gear and it sounds off. Any ideas???

having a hi mileage tranny275k , is way beyond the life expectancy of wear parts . the bearings inside wear and even destroy themselves , u have brass synchros which wear n give you that slopy shifting feeling , then theres hard part damge which could be a chipped or broken set of cluster gears. a rebuild runnung around 700 or look for low milage replacement which will eventually suffer the same fate. Also dont forget to check rear end for worn sub frame bushings which can make noise and also the carrier bearing in middle of drive shaft can wear n make noise . hope this helps or atleast gets u looking in the rite direction

If it was the TOB it wouldn't make noise when in gear, only when pressing in the clutch.

If you could get a video / recording of the sound, that might help. But most likely it's the 275k+ on it.
