View Full Version : Blown coilover?

Hey All,
Purchased a used set of s14 Fortune Auto coilovers from a forum member here in which he stated had less than 2,000 miles on them.

I received them today and 3 out of the 4 looked good had no signs of oil leakage, however 1 rear had oil on the sides as well as towards the bottom of the boot. Coilover is upside down in this pic.

Your input is greatly appreciated

I don't know the design of your coilovers, but I would just use a spring compressor and compress the spring. Take the top nut off and remove the spring, check the rebound of the strut. Push down on it and it should slowly come back up on its own. if not, then its blown..

The "leak" could be some wd40 or other lubricant, clean it off, see if it comes back

I would have guessed the same thing as you, but I'm sure all would have signs of lubricant not just 1. I really don't want to put these on if it's in fact blown. I'll have to take them back off if they are.

To my knowledge of coilovers, oil/grime is not a good sign. Usually means blown right?

Ok I'll give that a shot. I should be able to push it down by hand once the spring is off correct? Thanks

$850......
I went with this guy because he has quite a bit of positive rep and they looked superb in the pic.

I'm almost positive this one is blown tho. Seller said he thinks a rebuild is $100 and offered to pay, however he is unresponsive after confirming they are blown. Hopefully he'll be genuine enough

Would you guys say it's a goner?

That's leaking for sure, FA's came specially lubricated on the threads but that's not it. And if the coilovers are still under warranty, you can get them revalved/rebuilt.

if he pays for it! then thats good... but seriously though i was in your same shoes last week buy used or not... but it was very little more and u would have had brand new coils! lesson learned i guess... unless u paid 500 for them then yeah i would have got them

Services - Fortune Auto USA (http://www.fortune-auto.net/services.htm)

Coilover rebuild is $125 per corner & that doesn't include shipping rates to their facility, make him pay for it.

I got my Fortune Autos for 900 bucks with 5 miles on them. Just saying.

Seller offered to pay for a rebuild, but havent heard from him since.

I told myself I'll never buy used coilovers and the one time I go back on my word they are blown. :'(

Hopefully he'll get back to me tomorrow. I know it's a 3 hour difference.

The warranty is actually non-transferable

HOWEVER send it back to us. We will inspect it.
Before you send it to us please give us the serial # on the bottom of the shock.

I am skeptical if they have 2000 miles on them because it has rubber spring seats. We stopped doing that for some time now.

Basically if the shock is less then 1 year old we will take care of it for you...even though technically the warranty is not transferable.

If the coilovers are older then a year old, we can work out a special deal for ya :)

Call me tomorrow at 877-227-0260 ext 700, I will walk you through the details:bigok:

...aren't you quite the smart guy!

The person I bought them from is my neighbor who rarely drove his car. I inspected the coils & removed them from his car myself. They were like new :mephfawk:

And Terry good looking out! Definitely some awesome service on the forums.

Dude, you truly should! I seriously recommend them to everyone, they have top notch quality products and OUTSTANDING customer support. By far customer support is ON TOP of their game. I will not go with any other coilover company from here on out.

Again truly Fortune Auto, THANK YOU SO MUCH! :bowrofl:

Just kinda off topic...Terry, can you guys rebuild other company's coilovers too? I got a brand thats not exactly US friendly/available.

PS: I'll see you guys Sunday for the meet at your shop...

I will actually be making a thread soon about it in Chat.

We now have the tooling and parts to rebuild the following coilovers:

Bilstein
QA1
Ohlins
Penske

Bring the coilover to our open house Sunday so I can look at them.
Problem is that we may not have the tooling or parts to open and rebuild some coilovers. Also many Asian coilovers are not even rebuild-able. But I will try my best!

i noticed the same problem with mine after i inspected the used ones i bought wth about 5000km + 2000 i put on them. one of my rears is leaking.
would fortune auto be able to take care of this some how? i also have the ones with the rubber spring seats. bought them second hand about a yr ago.
i bought the coils BECAUSE of all the good reviews people give fortune auto. no problems so far either, just a bit of shock oil :/
