Off the top of my head the numbers sold for 89 were around 60k
same goes for 90.
So that's ballpark 120k first two years from there on out it was a downhill slide

I believe 91 was in the 30-40k range 92 came in at around 18-20k 94 was like 3k
95-96 was like around 30-40k 97-98 was around 15k total.

so ya around that number. You do have to realize a couple of things. As we speak of now the first 3 years are 20+ old. Which means even though they sold the most there are a lot that have gone to junk yard.

I would say the estimate of at least 10k currently unregistered is not far off base.
For those that wonder why it seems so rare it all depends on what part of the country you are in. Why, because sales of 240sx's had there strong and weak spots. It did not sell well all over the country.
A good majority of them were actually sold right here in Socal. Given the population base and the car culture its not surprising. Swallowing up 30-40k per year of a particular model would be easy here as the greater metropolitan area of LA alone is 11 million plus people. With the city coming in at 3 million.

So just to put the S14s in perspective, there are only 4,014 Kouki S14s out there compared to 17,765 Zenki S14s? There were 96s sold than all the koukis combined. Those don't seem to jive out. I know there's alot of Zenkis out there but those numbers seem too drastic of a difference.

Then throw in the fact that 65% of Kouki's sold originally were Autos...yah good luck finding a stock manual Kouki S14.

This data is accurate as of April 1st, 2011. Given that it's been more or less 6 months, those numbers are very likely to be lower than that.

I have a feeling I know why of course this may or may not have any factor. Pre 1978 was pre computerization on a large scale. They used microfiche for data numbers. I am guessing that no one saw a reason for converting all the microfiche data to PC. I know that it is that way with a lot of the parts numbers.

My guess also would be Polk data considers anything beyond those years in the import catagory not to have significant enough numbers.
Try doing a search on a like a Camaro or Mustang.


Oh and that is the HL510 you showed which was a royal piece of shit with solid rear axle. Yup NIssan brought the name back but not the IRS rear suspension.

Off the top of my head because I am a 240Z enthusiast I can tell you the sales numbers roughly they sold around 160k total. Which might not seem like a lot but that was astronomical numbers for Sports cars in those days.

I would hazard to say they probably sold close to a half million PL510's as they were everywhere and in every damn rental car fleet this side of the sun.
Oh and thats just the U.S. Worldwide the numbers were phenomenal.


PL510's/Bluebirds and 240Z/S30/Fairlady's alongside GC10/Skylines and of course the PL521 pickup,really put Nissan on the map worldwide.

Given all of this 240sx sales were really not bad in the first few years.

Though compared to numbers like the Miata's and Civic's and Camry's sales wise LOL

I do not know how the DMV is in your state but in California their computer systems are woefully ancient. Yes the smog machines do connect by modem dialup 14.4 . lol but basically they have never had state of the art systems.


I can also personally attest to the fact that they do not keep records of cars after a certain number of years of being off the books. I.E. going unregistered. I have seen 240sx's that were off the books, just long enough as to have to create a whole new reg history for the car. I sold Mehsilvia a chassis that that happened with.

If you look at the attrition rate of 240sx's and then apply the same type of mathematics to say the numbers for a 510 or 240Z given the spread over a greater number of years your attrition rate is going to skyrocket.

interesting because by these charts the hatch (which should really be called Fastback because that is what Nissan called it and that is what it is) numbers sold are pretty much equal to what 70-73 240Z sales numbers granted it was done in 5 years vs 3 for the Z.

Remember 240Z 's had hatch's or deck lids as well no one called them a Hatchback. Hatchback happens to be a Honda person term. LOL

Also freaky is the fact that of 160k worth of Fastbacks sold only 31% are now still registered that's quite an attrition rate. In fact even though the Coupes show 1% numbers wise the Coupes have faired better in the attrition rate department.

It just goes to show that people abused the fastbacks more than the Coupe which would mean that it (the Fastback) was actually somewhat of a success as an entry level Sports car. I know some of you don't like to think of it that way because Nissan really did not push it hard that way. Though that is really what the Fastback is and was, even more so in Japan than here.

It would be interesting to see the numbers for 240Z's just to see how many have actually survived. I know a lot got destroyed through crazy driving.

Technically, they are fastback styled hatchbacks. As in, they are styled like a fastback but have the properties of a hatchback being as there is a 3rd door. If they were strictly fastbacks then the entire back windshield would not open up like it does. If they were strictly hatchbacks then they wouldn't slope down with the roof like they do. So either term would be correct.

I would call it what the manufacturer called it as they are the manufacturer. Semantics aside.

Oh and they did not really start getting called hatch constantly till Honda kids came into the picture. They started using Honda car terminology to describe them.

I estimated a while back that on average about 650 240sx's get unregistered a month. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean totaled, just no longer registered.

So we are probably looking around 62,000 currently registered in the states. Keep in mind there were about 250,000 240sx's produced.
