Holy Shit another Build by Sileighty_85?


So about a year ago I finally came across a AE86 coupe Shell in fairly good condition without the "Drift Tax"

Body is straight, very minimal rust only two deep spots

For now a few things are gonna mocked up temporarily until I know for sure the engine is in good condition. Then later I can go back and make it better.

Im gonna post up sections at a time so its not one giant thing of pics.

It was fairly easy to drop it in just had a hard time getting the engine shoehorned in there but one it cleared the upper core support it wet in fairly easy.

The mounts that came with the chassis suck, the front sits way too high and i cant close the hood, so It looks like I'll have to make some new mounts

Working on a elbow that will clear the steering shaft since it wont fit between the block and shaft

Dont say shit about my welding it a Harbor freight welder, and its not done yet

Yes its very inefficient with the bends buts its the only way
And yes I know that theres a Manifold that will correct this issue but im not gonna spend $800 on one just yet

Heres my solution for the SR shifter

Normally ppl will use the stock SR shifter and cut up the interior and shorten the Ebrake since it hits when in 2-4-R gears.

Ehhhh, Im not really worried about it. Its a shifter, theres not much resistance or force required to shift. I dont know how you shift but I dont slam gears everytime I shift like Jackie Chan in that Rally Movie

I stumbled across a radiator I can use. It came from an AE72 (1983 4Door)
Its a two core but a little bit shorter than the AE86 Rad.

Alright, heres my idea for fixing the AE86 Speedo issue.

Seems most ppl will use a 280ZX speed sensor and use the mechanical speedo.
well its kinda hard to find one and I got a bunch of spare parts lying around.

Had an SR5 Dash lying around

then riped out the cluster and dash trim and slap a Boost gauge in it and swap the modded speedo in to the GTS cluster for the higher Red Line Tach gauge

Fabbed up a Throttle Cable.

AE86 TC are notorious for fraying so instead on buying a $90 cable, I made one from a KA throttle cable.

The AE86 one is pretty much a perfect fit for the SR in there so I used the specs from that one.

Measured the cable

Cut off the AE86 pedal stopper (that will be used on the new cable) as well as the plastic "T" thingy

Firewall is not an issue it is the little to no space in between the block and the steering shaft.

The fire wall is not an issue, Its the little to no space between the tranny and steering shaft.

I really dont wanna hack away at my transmission either, my elbow design not really a big deal to me. If restriction become a big deal I have a spare Megan Manifold I can modify to make a real elbow clear the shaft

Cool to see another SR86 dude. The mount kit I made I was able to use a stock SR down pipe and screamer pipe with the screamer part cut down a little. I tried using a Megan non divided and had to beat the shit out of it and it looked like shit so I junked it for a divided and it worked great. You didn't have to cut that part on the block lol, I ran into the same problem with mine and just got a 45 NPT fitting with a cut and welded S15 drain. How low does your pan sit? And how's alternator clearance? Let me know if you got any Q's I'd be glad to help dude!

Oh and DON'T get your driveshaft made by the driveshaft shop. Wasted alot of my time and had to send back a DS. Precision shaft technologies is great however.

Do you work at or run Wrench Pro? I Think Ive seen those mounts, Way cheaper that that other guys company ones.

Since its all stock Im not really worried about the elbow right now, just didnt want my firewall sprayed with exhaust gases.

I tried with that divided one and it still didnt clear. Im sure its my mounts. I made mine cuz the engine condition was unknown and didnt wanna spend money on mounts to find out its bad.

I had to cut that part on mine cuz the steering rack shaft couning was catching on it when I was dropping it in and I think the Shaft U-Joint was hitting it as well.

My return line is fine no issues on it. Oil pan is fine as well, Alternator is fine as well.

I got a local DS shop here thats gonna build me one.

Its ridiculous how easy it is if you know the SR harness pretty well.

^ Thanks alot! How much do you think you have in the swap not counting the shell or motor set. Trying to do this correctly on a skimp budget. Already have the motor set and picking up the car for 400. I have a friend that will let me copy his mounts so I just need metal for them. Wiring is free and drive shaft I can get on the hookup. Still need a diff and have to get a fuel cell because of the carb tank also.

I joined this forum to gain info on doing my own SR86 project, and have found it to be by far the most informative of about a dozen I have since frequented. Thank you to the many DIYers that make this possible. That being said, I would like to post some info that I learned in doing my swap that might not be mentioned here. It is likely irrelevant to most anyone not doing this swap, but I include it because it either very difficult to find on the web, or because I figured it out through trial and error. When I decide to do my own build thread, I will move this information there and link to it, but for now:

The exhaust is a very tight fit, especially with the turbo in the stock position and power steering. I can appreciate all of the suggestions from other on here regarding a workaround, but if you were to look at it you'd say "OOOhhhhh!" And then, " Damn, dude, how ARE you gonna make that happen?" Best suggestion is to use an aftermarket S13 elbow and then use the ol" "cut-and-weld-in-a-piece-of-pipe" trick, or just beat a big dent in it. Bottom line is that, even with a little restriction here, the car is still going to scoot like a raped ape.

I knew that my future plans included a T28 or T30, so I used a top mount manifold and just welded a t25 flange to it. Custom DIY Teflon lines and fittings from Frozenboost.com. Downpipe was tricky, but I've got 3" all the way past the steering shaft. Easiest thing to do is to buy the t25 to 3" v-band adapter and weld an elbow onto it, whether you go top mount or not. Manual steering rack helps a LOT. Manual rack from an AW11 MR2 works, and they are easy to find. The writeup is on club4ag if anyone else is interested. I'll post pics of my 'finished' project when I have a chance.

The wiring is exactly as shown in the diagram, very simple. I mounted my fuel pump relay in the trunk (near the battery), and used another relay in the front for switched accessories like fans and gauges and whatnot. For battery relocation , I suggest a 120A circuit breaker mounted in the trunk. Also provides a binding post for power distribution in the rear of the vehicle.

EvoVIII FMIC fits great. Cold side S13 FMIC piping fits pretty good, just trimmed 6" off of the rear of the lower piping. For the radiator hose, I found a 1.25" OEM hose with some good 90deg bends. Then we used a section of galvanized chain link top rail (yes, fencing) for the center section of the pipe. You could easily weld a bung to it for a temp sensor. We put a 10deg bend in it to allow it to clear the electric radiator fan.

Some Nissan Hardbody pickups had FS5W71(x) transmission with a shorter tailshaft section. Swap the KA bellhousing for the SR bellhousing and the shifter hole lines up almost perfectly. Also, the truck shifter (and extension housing) has a shorter throw than the S13/S14 transmission due to having a longer spindle below the pivot ball. I didn't want to use the long a$$ truck shifter, so I made a hybrid out of the two nissan shifters. I compared the stock SR20 shifter to the stock AE86 shifter, and they are identical. AE86 short throw shifter on eBay comes with a different extension housing that allows them to utilize a longer spindle, and I'll be damned if it doesn't appear to be exactly what I ended up with after several hours of cutting, grinding, and welding.

I find that the 4.3:1 final drive in the AE86 GTS rear end is a bit limiting, even on the street, but I've got a KAAZ 2-way LSD in mine and don't want to spend a bunch more money right now on a custom rearend. When I do (~6-12mos), I will go with a Mopar 8.75" rear and a 3.8x gear. Some Cressida wagons had a 7.5 solid rear axle, and of course there's always the MKI Supra rearend. The AE86 speedometer will still not be accurate, regardless of whether you use the S13 cluster or the 280z speedo sender unless you change the speedo drive gear for a 4.3 final drive. Just buy a GPS and use that for speed readings. Or get a smartphone app. It's much easier.

I was so scared that it wasnt gonna make it there after meeting up with the guy thats gonna tow it there.

First off the guy was wearing clothes that looked liked they belonged on a 8 yr old for the size. It was hot as shit out side and he had no AC in his cab.. I hand him the $175 that was due at pick up and he asked me what it was for......? explained it and he said oh ok, dont worry dude I aint gonna steal it....

3 of the tires were bald almost and the dude was once fired for being drunk....man really got a winner here...

at first he wanted me to drop it off and he was gonna load it it up but offered to help cuz I trust no one. I offered to drive it up if he spotted, asked if I had done it before. Told him i have loaded some low cars up on trailers he said "good cuz I havent done this much".....

One I get it driven up on the trailer he say, "Alright man were good"......
I ask him uhhh what about the tie downs..?? he says "Nah man it'll be alright...... FML Im never gonna see this car again or its gonna be destroyed..

I told him I'd feel alot better if we tied it down... which luckily we did.

After tied down I asked him how long until it got there and the dude had no clue where he was going.....

My only sign of relief was a brand new dealership Tahoe on the trailer.


But after all my regret and worrying Got a call from my bro this morning saying it arrived safely


Also gotta say Stance didnt Fuck around when they made the coilover for the 86..

This is as high as the front coilovers will safely go

didnt realize you commented. With mine No i did not. only that nub on the block I shaved off was close to the steering shaft.

Would be cool, but might suck if you plan on driving it long distances or DD'n it. If track only it'll work good, but becareful of the stock Axle they are pretty weak. Only reason I havent snapped my Zenki axles is cuz I have shitty tires in the rear

It's pretty rough sadly, needs a hard wash and clay bar.

Forgot to take a pic of the engine bay, but it had squirrels nests and shit all inside it.

This was after a quick wash, really need to get in there and scrub.

Luckily though it start and runs with no issues. Only big issue I had was the front right caliper was seized. Ripped it off and extended and compressed the piston a few times with fluid flush and it seemed to fix it.
