So it looks like Nissan is sponsoring a reality show where a group of finalists battle it out for the chance to become a real-life race car driver. Saw a commerical for it and felt it would be an interesting topic for discussion here.

Interesting how Nissan is always into the training/racing courses. When i bought my new 240 in Canada in the early nineties Nissan Canada offered race car driving courses for people who bought either a 240sx, 300zx or J30. Basically the RWD cars in their stable. The course wasn't free but it was a heavy discounted. I really wanted to go but couldn't afford it since i had just bought a new car (yes i know the irony of it).

I think it's tight, i wish they had something like this for NFS on 360, i used to be sponsored by Evil Controllers & Promodz. Those 16 are lucky this is a unique opportunity to look back on

The dumbest idea ever. O, yeah lets take a bunch a video game junkies and see if there gt5 skills translate into actual racing skills. What a shame, when there are so many people that have been racing since they were 6 years old (gokarts)and have been doing it to make a living, but no lets go see if some idiots playing video games can do this in real life.

If all you think is sitting on the couch with a gamepad in hand is racing..

It is legit, there have been documents of taking sim racers and throwing them in real cars and producing good lap times. Iracing did this and a few others in Europe have these type of competitions.

I made a thread about it a few years back

I havent seen it though. But the adaption level from sim to real race car is alot quicker than from nothing to real race car.

Gran Turismo as far as a simulator, is decent but not the best imo. GT /Forza and any other console racer is dumbed down for the mass.

F1 teams use simulators alot

Online sim racing is pretty competitive , and great for those who can't fund a real car or just have other priorities. You got to play with a steering wheel /peddle setup to understand it.

They've had this for a while but this is the first time I've actually seen them advertise it on TV. Must mean it's a pretty big promotion for Nissan.

why are people hating on this? i think its a great idea..think about it if these 16 "gamers" got the fastest times in the world in a SIM then that obviously means they know the fundamentals of a racetrack and how to drive a car around the track..yes there going to need some real seat time but this is a great way to practice IMO

  fucking tard.

Just because mommy and daddy have a disposable income and time to take you go kart racing, pay for the trips, the upkeep on the kart, the tires, the fuel and all the other shit that goes with it GREAT! When a sim racer gets out and hands you your ass on a platter in the real world, maybe he was the one ment for the track and not you.

Congratulations sir, your one of the thousands of zilvian's that like directing negative statement about people you clearly dont know enough to talk smack about, feel pretty good about yourself huh. While your over there rofl, you might want to read my post over as I never said "I have been go-karting since I was 6" I was making an inference regarding people that start there racing career at a very early age that are much more capable race car drivers by the age of 16-24 than the people put together for this publicity stunt which is clearly not intended for finding a practical race car driver.

BTW parents died 6 years ago.

^^^Yeeeaaaahhh... Lets not make this a sob story thread...

This whole thing seems dumb only if you think that the people who are good at GT5 and participating in this GT Academy are nothing more than couch potato kids that having nothing better to do but dedicate themselves to being the best at GT5.

But at the same time, how many of you sit there playing GT5, who actually do productive activities for the most part, regardless if you have some track time or not, and think, "Fuck.... I'll never get sponsored enough to do this for real."

I know I do....

So, Nissan GT Academy is your ticket to making that happen.

So what if the couch potato gets to race for real. It's called finding talent. If Nissan GT Academy thinks they can find talented racers through GT5, so be it.

What I'm curious to know is... How do you stay on top of all the cheaters that wreck into you and ruin your odds of even being close to top 16?

couch potato kids vs someone sitting behind a simulated cockpit steering wheel will have different times imo.. gamepad doesnt give that that precise of movents a steering wheel does.. I dont think you can put competitive times down with a gamepad as opposed to someone sitting in a sim rig, the depth of feel is greater in the rig.

That is just my opinion btw but coming from racing in sims alot I do feel strong about that. I play at my desk with a logitech g25 mounted to it, and in sims I am like 4-7 off pace of the top guys in an online race. Always figured that Im only getting soo much out of my desk, and those guys are probably sitting in full blown sim rigs with the right low posture like in a race car etc.

GT5 is a mass affordable sim racer, its not a die hard sim but it has enough imo, which is good.

It is closer to reality with a steering wheel, compared to say EA hosting a football search from people playing Madden lmao

You guys are assuming that these GT Academy finalists are just dumb gamer kids, but they could be you and me... meaning I'm certain every one of them has had seat time on a real track before.

I think GT Academy is a great idea!

Considering that you really do not know what your saying above because your statement is based on speculation and opinion on your part.

I mean really you are just going to diss a car that wipes the street with cars that cost almost 3 times as much and put it down? You sir speak ignorantly at best.

You may not like it, it may not be what you in your retro purist 20 year old brain,(LOL) thinks is what it should be. Though there is no denying it lives up to the Skyline GTR legacy quite well.
