Officer Mikeys clean S13 Rb build!

So first off I want to start out by thanking Douglas Smith and Erik RittttttchhhhheeRR of U.P. Garage cause with out their help and knowledge I would still be building pieces of shit like the rest of you. ;). So I've built a few pieces of shit over the years and ended up with a lot of parts. Decided to find an S13 shell to build my final car that blows everything else out of the water. Oh and I've built some complete fail and wasted a ton of money in very dumb places.

So I got an S13 from oregon that was a shell. I overlooked a minor detail upon purchase and that was the fact that the car had frame damage.

I decided to buck up and fix it due to it being a full power car with a clean title. Ripped apart the frame, body, and firewall to replace it with good straight parts the correct way.

Once the damage was fixed I made the decision to weld up everything and round out everything. And yes the frame is reinforced behind the welds. It is stronger then it was before.

Lots and lots and lots and lots of welding and grinding. I'm talking 2 months of welding and grinding while I was laid off.

Once everything was welded and grinded I decided to put it together and roll it out for the first time since I bought the car.

5 lug and z brakes were so lonely in my garage that I took the opportunity to install it all.

Once it was rolling again I started body work on the engine bay. Jason Lucier of Jasons custom compacts was my help with the body work. He is a immaculant professional painter. He owns hands down the prettiest s13 showcar in the United States.

Finally the car was off on a tow truck to Jasons shop for him to focus on it more.

The day came to seam seal up all of the underbody where I had replaced all the damage. The interior recieved seam seal and a catalyst sealing epoxy. Then rubberized undercoating.

Time for paint! The color I chose is off of a 2010 Hyunadai Tucson. Kiwi Green Metallic.

Now the car made it back home for a nice engine. I rebuilt my R33 Rb26 from my last car which was garbage.
Heres the engine in the last car. The car was hacked together by Tino and Shane back in the custom imports days. When they were here to rip you off. I had to fix so much S it wasn't even funny.

Fresh bore and hone. .020 over. Wiseco forged pistons. Arp head studs. Greddy head gasket. Greddy timing belt.
N1 water pump. New ACL main and rod bearings. New valve seals. I think thats it. Lots of help from Doug putting this back together. Engine was machined by Pacific Engine Rebuilders and the powder coating was done by Kens Powder coating.

Yea not much rain driving will be done with this. I have a couple other daily drivers. This is my weekend car for shows and lapping days. The outside will be like the factory two tone. Bottom will be a darker metalic. I have a few colors in mind. My garage isn't the biggest but it works.

The second those fans come on my water temp drops two degrees.. lol.
The fans rarely come on too..
Those fans combined are like 2500cfm. Very very very good fans made in Italy. Also very very expensive. The shroud is custom made as well.

As for the front of the car, it will recieve bricks and a Gtr grill. I'm purchasing those here soon. Whats on there now will probably get sold.

Yes it fits correctly you just have to cut a couple holes for everything to be left hand drive. Gas door handle, foot rest thing, etc..

So everything is here from Japan. Special thanks to Jon! Car got what I thought was gonna be its final prime yesterday but turns out when I was masking the sunroof I leaned on the roof on both sides and put a serious of waves/dents in the roof with my elbos. :(. So a little body work and reprime to roof is needed. Still happy to stare at all my new presents.
Of course if you didn't see my general chat post I now have 3 Aero bumpers ^_^. I've got one buyer who placed a deposit on one which I am going to fix for him then deliver. Happy bout that. Got everything prepped for Jason to start cutting in things and spray jams. Outside is 80% ready for paint. Little bit more sanding. Everything should be cut in by the time I get off work today. i love the color. and would you be willing to discuss with me how you did your radiator setup? thats exactly how i wanted to do mine but the whole radiator cap underneath the core support has failed me and i havent thought about it since.

I don't have a cap under the core. I fill through the purge bottle. The radiator is a unit produced locally here by U.P.Garage. It or course can be manufactured and shipped to you. It can come in a few different set ups depending on your budget. My complete radiator with my fans will run about $800. I believe just the radiator with an in spout is about $400 plus shipping. And you get what you pay for. This is a dual flow high quality radiator. If you bought just the core you would need to weld and fabricate the mounting hardware, out spout, and fan hardware. My fans are made by spal in Italy. The big one is rated at 1500cfm. I've never had the small one even come on under extreme conditions. It's set to a high temp. So if you interested lmk and I can collaborate with Doug at U.P.Garage to get you what your looking for.

Of course theres middle grounds with that radiator like mounting tabs, spout, and shroud welded on and you do your fans. So price can vary with what your budget it.

Sucks you guys will never see justice in the lower color by looking at pictures here. The bottom has a lot of green pearl in it. Put wheels on and suspension. Fender is just sitting there to see how it looks. Can't bolt anything down just yet. Paint is to soft.

It does go slighty into the jams now. The black w/ green pearl was sprayed in there while painting the outside. Also, when the black sideskirts go on it will cover the rest of where it needs to be black in the jams

It still would have been awesome looking when you open the doors the two tone flows seamless through the openings..... I just painted an AE86 atomic orange and black two tone and I did the jams and doors and gas door and opening and it looks insane :) great work though!!

Just some more pictures. Windows are in. The guy did a horrible job with the trim and Jason came over and fixed it. The window guy also set the rear window to low so now he has to come back to cut it out and reinstall it. I received my nismo power brace, spl tension rods, and picked up a Nismo 2 way. I will be posting a new thread here soon to review my opinions about the bings.ca rear valance reps and the supermade rear wing. Heres more pics from lately. As of right now I've been working on the wing and its needed a lot of work. The top and rear were by no means flat so we've been skim coating and sanding it. Not very happy about the wing requiring so much work considering how much it was.

So my poncams came yesterday. Those are half installed at the moment. They are the tomei poncams type b. Also been working on making a new exhaust. Picked up some 3-1/2 inch cause 3" just wasn't big enough. I have a titanium muffler that will be on the end. Also making new downpipes cause they suck. They were made by the guy who originally had this swap and everything he's done is just horrible hack work. Then it will be back on the dump for a retune since I made changes.

It has absolutely no function but a obnoxious noise. It only makes 450whp with the hks turbos I have on there's 3inch is completely fine. And it's 3.5 inch. I'd run the hks 4 inch ti exhaust if someone hadn't damaged it.

Uhhhh.... If using sarcasm/basic internet forum response makes me a cool fan boy then ya. I have a stock KA with a header, cat, and 3 inch exhaust and I notice like a 50whp difference (note the sarcasm). I put the stuff on my car because I got it for free and it sounds cool, this guy decided to put a 3.5 inch pipe on his car because he felt like being different.

Besides.. a 3.5 exhaust on his car isn't even that overkill. People run dual 3" setups on 5 liter mustangs that only make 400 hp without turbos. He's runing a single 3.5" pipe on a motor with half the displacement and more power...

Cams are installed and ran the car for a few minutes. Since I pulled the cam angle sensor, new cams, and new exhaust all the tuning doesn't mean poop. So it'll be back on the dyno soon for a touch up.

And to be honest from what I've seen with dyno results a 3" inch exhaust isn't restrictive for 700bhp. The 4 inch hks exhaust that I had available to me is rated for 1000hp

They are already hks gt-ss's. A very great responding set of turbos. 440 wheel is way more hp then I'll ever need. Anything over 350 in an s13 is pointless.

This is the all titanium muffler that I got from japan. I cut the bigger tip off of another fucked up ti muffler I had and had it welded to this one cause it's bigger. Gonna try and finish the exhaust pipe tonight.

So I've got the exhaust mostly made. I still need to make the hangers. I love the sound that car produces now with the cams and the new exhaust. I need to finish painting the rest of the parts and remake the downpipes so I can drive it over to U.P.Garage for some more tuning. I'm pretty happy with the exhaust considering I only own/used a sawzall and a grinder. I'm gonna grind the welds and have the whole thing powdercoated Ken's powdercoating 1800 degree satin black.

Restoring my Lm's at the moment. Gonna post pics and a "how to" here in a few minutes.

So heres a tutorial on how one can restore his wheels.

These are of course my LM's that are on my car. First pull the sob off the car and pull the face out.

So some wheels are polished then have a clear coat sprayed over them. Easy way to tel is to try and polish them. The polish will turn black if its against bare aluminum. If it doesn't really discover your just rubbing against a clear coat. Depending on what your aiming for you may be able to get away with just buffing the clear coat. That'll make em nice again. However I wanted to repair the lips so I used aircraft stripped to strip off the clear coat. A good wash is in order afterwards.

Then it was on to repair the curb damage. Where the curb damage wasn't to bad I just used a 60 grit whirly disc on it and cut out the damage. I left a few small imperfections cause I didn't want to cut the lip down to much. Be mindful of the shape of the lip. If it has beveled edges you want to make sure that you don't sand flat bringing the edges to a point.

Once the damage is gone you'll wanna sand the surface smooth again. I did this by starting with 120 grit sand paper and going up in steps tell I reached 2000 grit. 120 - 240 - 320 - 400 - 800- 1000 - 1500 - 2000 grit. Once its all sanded out youll wanna take a sec to look around the rim to see if theres anywhere you may of hit the rim with 120 grit. You'll wanna get rid of those accidental scratches by going through the same process. Once sanding is complete take it out for another wash.

Make sure the wheel is dry before starting the polishing process. I used my drill and a couple differen't buff wheels to get in all the areas of the wheel. The polish I used is Meguiars All Metal Polish.

As you can see after a good once over its already starting to mirror up.

The way the process works is apply some polish around the wheel with a rag then go over the entire wheel with the polisher. Once the polish is good and worked in it'll be a swirly black.
Then you can wipe with a clean dry rag. Repeat the process tell you reach the finish your looking for. I did the polish process a total of three times tell I reach the epic mirror finish.

I then reassembled the wheel. It take a proper squence and torque settings to assemble it correctly. You'll also want to use blue lock tight. And presto a mint restored BBS LM

Got the exhaust all ready for powder coat. Just had to make hangers to work with the stock locations. Also made a hang for the muffler even though it weighs nothing. I wish the whole exhaust was 3.5" Ti, but I don't have 2000$ nor is this a race car. Just gonnna powder coat it a high heat 30% gloss black. Powder coat does a pretty good job covering up my horrible mig welds. Also taking the time, while the wheels are off, to drop the car 1/2" more in the back and 3/8" in the front.

All the locks are out of the car right now. I'm getting them all matched to my ignition key. I have a Silvia square trunk lock that goes in. I'm gonna put the side skirt and rear valance on tomorrow then take some better quality pictures with a real camera. And yea I've had a couple people say to drop it another inch and tuck the tire in the wheel well but theres one thing I like better then looking at my car and thats driving my car. I like a working ride heigth.

Would also like to add that I bought some MAN tires. Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec. I jumped down a size cause my tire guy said the Star Specs are over and sized. 245/40/18 rear and 225/40/18 front. And yes they were oversized lol. They are as big as the tires I had on the car before which were 255/40 and 235/40. Worked out nicely. Just a little camber as you can see and perfecto!

I haven't seen this car in person. I would like to so that I can compare things. Pictures don't serve much for in terms of quality. Clean has infinit definitions too. I personally define clean as in Jason, who painted my car, has the cleanest s13. His car is mirror under the car show car clean. My car is clean in a sense it's simplified. After being fixing a few things and more tuning the car is absolutely a blast to drive. The power band is from 4000 to 8500. Horsepower climbs the whole way and torque is flat all the way to 8500. It's making 450 [email protected] psi now and the Dunlop star specs have no issues keeping control. Gotta play with the suspension and little more and then I'm looking forward to some lapping days and autocross. It's also been accepted into super street so people will see that soon. I couldn't be any happier with it.

His car has it's positive points as well as mine. It's hard to figure quality not being in person. As for "clean" it is nice. In this case the word clean is being used in place of the word cool. It varies person to person who's car is more clean cause how cool are car is varied by ones preferences. I define clean as lack of dirt. And Jason's car is mirror under the car clean.

Paint some interior pieces. Paint some bolts for the fenders and hood. Fix my quater panel at some point. Just tidy up. I've been more focused on driving it then anything. I think it will be in Novembers SuperStreet. I gotta finish the write up by Monday.

Theres a few aluminum pieces I want to build here soon. Something to cover from the head lights to the upper tie bar. A strut tower brace. And a box the keeps the filters from sucking hot engine/radiator air.

Seeing your car back in March is what convinced me to find a two-tone coupe.
I bought one in April and a week later bought a 180sx half cut with an s13 blacktop. Now, this is my first real BUILD that I've done. I stripped and cleaned every inch to make it the cleanest car I can. My coupe is a long way from being on the level of yours and I need a lot of suspension pieces replaced, it's dangerous to drive now(bad tie rods/ends, no dampening in the struts, and much more) and unfortunately I don't really have money to fix a lot of the problems mine has. But I know that if I keep at it and stay meticulous about every little detail, some day I'll end up with a car as immaculate as yours.

I didn't need to remove the tires to just sand out scratches and polish them like I did. I should of took the time to dismount the tires so I could of had some of the curb dave welded up.

As for your build my advice is only spend money on stuff you need. Replace the few suspension parts that are shot but don't waste money on brand new after market arms.

So I decided to change things up and switch over to a single turbo. I ordered a Garrett GTX3076R with a T3 .82ar turbine housing with a v band outlet. Part of the frustrations with switching over is sourcing a manifold and one that fits on a 26 in an s13. I decided to make my own. Tag along and feel free to divulge.

Just read all 8 pages, real nice build. I think my favorite part bout it is its not "hella flush" style...its serves a purpose, dont get me wrong....i do like cars that are hella flush, at least when there done right but like you mentioned earlier in one of your posts, you like to "drive" your car. With all that being said, the only thing negative i have to say is...this isnt a "blow everything out of the water build" lol its a sick build and id probably lable it as "blow everything thats been posted up lately out of the water" just sayin.... :cool: When i have my s13 done, i hope it can come out as clean as yours

you know it may be easier if you just wait till the turbo gets in. Then find a way to set up the turbo exactly where you want it, and then build the runners to the turbo. This way you don't run into any clearance issues. Nice car though!

Ive been using a 25 turbo for mach up purposes. My biggest struggle was not having the riggt cutting tools. Youd be amazed if you saw what ive been workkng with lol.

Update time!
So this winter I had a list in my head of what I wanted to get accomplished this winter.
A few things I'm realizing wont come to be. Just not enough time. If you haven't already caught it my car was in November2012 Superstreet magazine. So heres the list
1. Build manifold and change to single turbo. GTX3076R
2. Repowercoat everything to a glossy color
3. Delete the hood prop fix a couple cracks and repaint parts of the engine bay
4. Hood shocks
5. Powdercoat misc parts
6. Build new coolant swirl pot
7. Mold flares into quaterpanels and front fenders.
8. Fix dents and repair fenders and quarterpanels.
9. Brembo brakes!
10. Nardi Steering wheel
11. New back seats
12. Digital Climate control
13. Delete hud and put in minty dash
14. B pillar trim

1,2,5,9 Are all done at this point.
3,4,6, I'm in the middle of.
7 won't happen cause thats to much damn work.
The rest is easy and will get done. Heres pics from crap so far.
Also I invested in a tig welder and now do EVERYTHING myself. Doug will still tune the car.

I traded my old turbos for a full set of R34 Breambos. I took them apart powdercoated them and put them back together.

I built my own manifold and my friend tig welded it.(before I bought my tig welder. I now build manifolds.) I pieced it all together and tacked it. He went over everything with his polisher and tig welder.

As for the powdercoated turbo. Its a GTX3076R. I smoother out the entire compressor housing and had it powdercoated. Nows its Chinese ebay turbo in disguis! haha

Then it was downpipe time. I took my old Apexi check valve out of my old downpipes and welded it into the end for when the popos come around.

Intercooler plumbing is done. I built a 1000hp intake for my 450whp turbo. Vroom vroom. And I'm now welding and grinding away at the engine bay waiting for exhaust parts to show up.
