Sorta new on this forum... Ride is a '93 240 Convertible with swapped 5 speed tranny.

Anyway the rattling sound from the engine is getting pretty loud, and I am pretty sure its the timing chain guide. I've seen many "how-tos" on the web, but I have a pretty simple question....

If I remove the engine head cover, how hard is it to put back on? (or should I even attempt this), my concerns are if I need to get some of that slimy gasket residue, or even a new gasket every time I open it etc?

And if I do open up the engine cover.... what kind of mods do you think I should do?

I have a very basic set of tools, and my mechanic skills are about average.

Sorry for the ignorance, but all help is appreciated.

Thx in advance.

It's very straightforward..

You can reuse the old gasket, just be sure to scrape off as much of the old liquid gasket as you can (from both the rubber gasket and the head). Torque back according to spec and order, if you wish. I just did crisscross by hand feel.

If you know what you are doing you can go ahead and stick cams in there..but if you don't understand how timing chains work, and how to align (or rather, keep the alignment), you will screw something up.

Go go gadget search!!

Y'know, searching would be a lot easier if we still had a big red search button :P

Hey guys, thanks for the help...

Sounds like an easy job, and I'll see if I can get it in tomorrow.

Anyway so the bottom line is...

1. remove cyl head cover
2. remove guide (put bolts back on)
3. remove liquid junk of current gasket
4. apply new liquid gasket
5. put head cover back on.

sounds simple enough...

Anyone got any suggestions as to which liquid sealant I should get?

And if I was to replace the gasket, where can I get it and how much do they run?

Thx

recap: u took 1 of the 2 upper guides, u can remove the other to rid of most of the noise.
