My stock tape deck in my 240 is the same way. Old factory audio tends to do that I think, lol.

to help, im going to lay out the answers directly from your quote, in reverse order from which you asked...

what could be the problem.??

the stock speaker in the doors, and little after market ones in the rear (crappy 20W rear speakers, and OEM 5W carboard foam 5.25" front

an oem stereo
(crappy 20 year old technology, through years and years of heat, the amps are probably shot)

Also, was the car equipped with active speakers, with the rear amp? or just a base model? is the stereo intended for the 240 with the active speakers, or the base?

just get a hundred dollar sony, or pioneer.. it will destroy the oem one..

im running this one, so it looks "oem" but sounds a billion times better.

...the 6x9's can get louder than i want to listen. and were only about 50-60 bucks.. the wood and carpet/fleece was like $20 TOTAL, a few screws, spray on adhesive, and a staple gun later, this thing is PERFECt. I do have matching 6.5"s in the front, but the rears are about 75% of the listening power..

Save up about 200$, get a good head unit (50W RMS X 4), a pair of good front and rear speakers (200W+ each), and you will be able to listen to some very loud clear music, with a little bit of actual thump.

hell yea! i got a stock tape deck too. i bump sublime and rage against the machine all day. mind doesnt seen quite as loud either. if i move the volume knob to its side the speakers cut in an out some :(

Then buy a 4 channel amplifier and call it a day. I have a whole stock room full that I can sell you;)

I do it all of the time for customers who do not want to lose the OEM look of their factory equipped radio. You will gain more volume and better mid-bass response. You would probably want to replace the speakers at some point to take full advantage of the amplifier. I have amplifers easily small enough to fit under one of your seats... that way it's all hidden and will retain that OEM look.

sp, for like $50 you could have an aftermarket sound system that is equivalent to the one you would have gotten off the lot in 1995 except with better circuits, a cd player, and a clean oem look (just get the cheapest aftermarket you can find that doesnt have 75 leds)

Done.

Or, do it right, and spend ~$200 to make a sound system that is equivalent to what you might get in a car you drive off the lot today.
