So, I figured I would do a little build thread for my car since it's a much easier way to get feedback and help than hoping people read and then comment on my blog. I'll probably do a few posts a day here until I'm up to date on where the car is now. I'll be completely removing the HICAS this winter (as opposed to just using a HICAS eliminator bar) and will be doing a pretty big brake upgrade project, so I'm sure I'll have some questions for you guys based on your experiences.

Anyway, let's get on with the first post. I'm just going to quote these from my blog so if anything is contextually weird, sorry, I'm not rewriting these posts haha.

First post from back in May when I flew to seattle to buy the car:

Flew out Tuesday afternoon. Thought I had a 545 flight, so I showed up at 4:30, turns out it is a 445 flight. Luckily the flight was delayed 2 hours. Bummer on the delay, but better that than miss the flight. So flight finally leaves around 6:30pm. At this point I'm bummed because I thought my second flight would also be delayed 2 hours, so I'd be making Niko ( guy I'm buying the car from) stay up even later. It ended up just cutting into my 3 hour layover time so that was sweet. My landing in Chicago gave me whiplash it was so rough. Neat. Had an hour to chill at O'Haire before my connecting flight to Seattle took off. That was an 8 hour flight of no sleeping and pure boredom. Was an aisle seat too..bummer.

So I land in Seattle at 11pm local time / 1AM my time. Niko picks me up at the airport, takes me over to the car and we sign some paperwork. So it's pretty late but I just flew across the country and bought a car so I'm pretty wired. I decide to try and drive a little while. I made it about 2 hours before I figured I'd pull over and sleep. So it was about 3am my time. I pulled into some random rest stop and hopped in the passenger side, locked the doors, and leaned the seat back. Between the cars constantly coming and going, the uncomfortable ass seat, and being extremely cold, I didn't get much rest. I woke about 2 hours later with back pain so bad I couldn't feel my legs, hands shaking from cold so bad I couldn't get the key in the ignition etc. So I decided that that was probably all the rest I was going to get in that 5-star resort, and to hit the road again.

I pull out of the rest stop and realize I'm in the middle of some national park, it's sun-rise, and there are snow-capped mountains everywhere. Pretty wild. Where I'm from there are no hills, mountains, lakes, rivers, etc. Nothing. Just a bunch of corn. I drove for about 2 hours before I started falling asleep again. I guess I overestimated how much rest I got from the 2 hours of shitty sleep in the car. So I found a Motel6 on the side of the interstate and pulled in. I got about 4 hours of much needed awesome sleep. As i was checking out and walking out to the car I snapped this pic.

http://images57.fotki.com/v505/photos/2/47612/9786173/13-vi.jpg

I hopped back on the road and started driving. Overall in the first day I think I drove about 20 hours.
After a few hours I pulled over and snapped this picture with the trusty iPhone. Reminds me of something out of a Fallout game or something.

http://images45.fotki.com/v148/photos/2/47612/9786173/photo-vi.jpg

I plugged in the GPS and it said this:

http://images15.fotki.com/v246/photos/2/47612/9786173/2-vi.jpg

500 Miles to the next turn and it can't calculate the arrival time. What did I get myself into.

In the next picture you'll see a flood on the side of the interstate. Well what you don't see is that that flood decided it would be sweet if it crossed the road, and flooded it about 1 foot deep for 100 yards. So I sit in traffic for about an hour near Livingston, Montana as everyone has to creep through it. I get up near the front of the line and decide to pull over check out the flood. I walk up to the State Trooper keeping an eye on things up near the front and ask her how deep it is. She says "It's only about a foot deep, you should be fine". I kind of give her an "Are you serious?" look, and glance back at my car, which is probably about 2 inches off the ground at the lowest point. She's like "well, you don't have much of a choice, it won't be down for another 3 or 4 days". So I just had to go for it. it was scary, but I made it. Felt the car get a little floatey at one point. So i make it to the other side, heart beating about 200BPS. I see a cop on the other side and he's just laughing and shaking his head. Not that funny man. Anyway, car was fine, no electrical shortages, no hydrolocking, etc. Moving on..

http://images15.fotki.com/v246/photos/2/47612/9786173/4-vi.jpg

http://images110.fotki.com/v615/photos/2/47612/9786173/8-vi.jpg

So about midnight rolls around on the first day and my GPS has me hop off the interstate in south eastern Montana and get on some state-highway for a little bit. Long story short, worst roads ever, deer everywhere, almost run out of gas in the middle of nowhere, finally find a gas station in this real impoverished Indian Reservation town, multiple super beat cars creeping through the lot with like 10 guys in the back just STARING at me (not in the "oh, cool car" way, but in the "oh, let's rape this guy" way), then the car would just pull back out of the lot, etc. Finally find a hotel about 3am and hit the hay. At this point I was pretty delusional, I was laying in bed, but couldn't make my mind go to sleep because I thought I was still driving. Wake up the next day around 9am and drive 16 hours and make it home. All in all it was a little over 2000 miles in 2 days.

Safe and sound and cleaned up a little

http://images108.fotki.com/v105/photos/2/47612/9786173/1-vi.jpg

I drove back with the previous owner's license plates on the car, but with the plates from my previous 240 in my backpack. I wasn't sure which was less illegal. The cop that pulled me over, searched the car, etc in western Montana I think it was, said I was in the wrong either way. He ended up being really weirded out by the fact that I flew across the country and paid a lot of money for a 1991 Nissan to a guy that sounds like a Russian mobster. He let me off with five written warnings. I was originally pulled over for 83 in a 75. That damn boost gauge blocked my speedometer.

What made that gas station stop so sketchy was that it was 3am, I had no cell service, across the street from the gas station was an old run-down garage with a couple guys sitting around a bonfire watching two pitbulls fight, and there were multiple cars full of dudes that pulled through just to look at me. like in one entrance, roll thru the lot real slow making eye contact with me, then back out the other side.

Ok that'll have to do for my first post. I keep going thru and editing this thing and adding details and it's getting annoying.

Here is the second post to provide some actual "build" for you guys.

So last week I had a few parts show up for the car. I'll start with the smallest.

http://images108.fotki.com/v613/photos/2/47612/9786173/_MG_4914-vi.jpg

When I got the car it didn't have a Nissan badge on the bumper, which kind of bugged me since there was an indentation on the bumper for it. Russell from NissanParts.CC let me know the factory US one works fine and you just hacksaw the little pin that comes off the back of it off and you can use it.

Next order of business. New carpet. The carpet/floormats in this thing were DISGUSTING. You can't really get a feel for how nasty in this pic but whatever.

http://images110.fotki.com/v629/photos/2/47612/9786173/_MG_4906-vi.jpg

So I went ahead and ordered a stockinteriors.com black carpet pan for the front and rear.

http://images110.fotki.com/v109/photos/2/47612/9786173/_MG_4908-vi.jpg

I work 8am-930pm pretty much every day so it took me three days to get this in, as I could only work on it from about 10pm until when I fell asleep. Usually about 1:30am I'd start kinda winding down and call it a night. The first night I got the interior and old carpet out, as well as installed the new rear section.

http://images110.fotki.com/v630/photos/2/47612/9786173/_MG_4912-vi.jpg

I put the new carpet pan on top of the old one and left it in my garage during the next day so it warmed up and really mimicked the shape of the old carpet.

The second day I started doing a little bit of trimming and cutting on the new pan. Here's where I finished that night.

http://images112.fotki.com/v106/photos/2/47612/9786173/_MG_4919-vi.jpg

I didn't get a picture of it all finished up just yet, but it turned out pretty good. Here's a random picture of my new DMAX floormats as well. I got these at the same time.

http://images15.fotki.com/v246/photos/2/47612/9786173/_MG_4921-vi.jpg

I also put in my Bride Zeta 3, but once again, I'm a scum bag and didn't get a picture yet.

Yeah I was really freaking out. I was texting Damon like crazy lol. He got me through it without having a breakdown.

So many kouki build threads

True, but as always, people manage to fuck up even the simplest of things.

Looking forward to this build.

Wish other Kouki build threads would have more attention to detail, but oh well. I'll just worry about my own build.

Nice story and awesome car. I was going to fly to Arkansas to pick up a car very similar to the one you bought from a guy on here (super nice dude). I talked to him over a couple day period and planned for him to pick me up for the nearest airport and what not. I live now live in San Francisco so I would have drove a total of 24 + hours back. After a final decision I decided it probably wasn't a good idea with time constraints and expense on the trip back. I found a nice stock hatch to start new with in LA. So I flew down there and picked it up and drove back 6 hours to San Fran all in a day and also hit up a crazy (House music) party right when I got back (1:00a). We love our 240's.

Thanks for all of the positivity guys haha. I've got a couple updates for you guys today:

Ok, no pictures for this post so sorry in advance. Just thought I'd post a little update on what I've been up to for the last week or so with the car.

I got a Cusco OS rear strut tower bar from Damon. I need to get the carpet pieces for the sides of the hatch area. When I track those down I'll put in the strut bar and take some pics.

Found a dude on zilvia selling 30mm aluminum 300ZX brakes. I bought the fronts off of him. I also ordered a rebuild kit from nissanparts.cc. I plan on really going through these and powdercoating them, zinc plating all of the bolts, et cetera. The last thing I ordered for the front brake setup today are the brackets that space the calipers out so that you can run 350Z Track edition sized rotors instead of the 300ZX rotors. I'll keep piecing together the brake setup (still need a ton of stuff), then eventually tear into it and redo the entire brake system and get rid of the ABS. I still need non-ABS brake hard lines, conversion lines from the hardlines to calipers, rear brake calipers, brake rotors front and rear, e brake setup, BMC, brake booster, etc. I imagine it's going to be a significant undertaking to get rid of the ABS, but it should be fun.

kyles1988

Aaaaand the second post for today.

Ok so I'm going to go ahead and skip doing a post or several about all of the Import Alliance stuff from July. It was awesome but I didn't really take any pictures, so you can cruise on over to Damon's Blog or The Chronicles for coverage of that. Damon did a pretty good job chronicling the trip down there etc.

Random pictures from IA:

http://images47.fotki.com/v1588/photos/2/47612/9786173/2-vi.jpg

http://images47.fotki.com/v1588/photos/2/47612/9786173/4-vi.jpg

So I'm still piling up parts for the hatch:

First thing I think I bought for the car was a new rear view mirror since on the way home from Seattle, probably well over 12 hours into one of the days I had some dude tailgating me with HID's so to stop further laser-eye surgery i hit my rear view mirror (since the little "night-time" tab didn't work) so that it wouldn't point into my brain. Well ever since then it won't stay where I put it, it just vibrates down. No pics of this KILLER INSTALL though because seriously, its one clip thing, and 2 phillips screws.

Since my last post I picked up a kevlar RPS13 rear garnish (something I've wanted for a longgggg time, but never had a car to put one on haha), Nardi 330mm flat steering wheel, WorksBell SPLASH hub, and probably some other stuff. Well I finally found some free time last night so I cruised over to Toby's house and I put the wheel and garnish on and removed the monster 4" boost gauge that came in the car while Tob did some more work on his engine bay and Jason did some little stuff on his LS1 FD.

Some pictures of new toys and the old boost gauge on it's way out.

http://images59.fotki.com/v112/photos/2/47612/9786173/1-vi.jpg

I'm going to post the boost gauge on zilvia for sale before too long here, although I don't have particularly high hopes of it selling for much. If it doesn't sell, I might try to make it into some sort of Flava-Flave esque chain and wear it for a new years party or something.

So next on the list for the car is Z32 MAF (I think my SR MAF is on its way out, so that's why the car idles a little rough/jumpy), APEXi Power Suction intake to run the MAF, and an exhaust. My exhaust is currently stock and scrapes going into my garage (also will tear the tiles out and drag them under it), so it's developed a little leak. Few things are more lame than a leaky stock exhaust on a 4 cylinder car. Sounds like such garbage right now. But one of those things that would be more lame would be a loud ass car with a jumpy idle. Not to mention it's hard to hide the fact that your car is a junker when you're sitting at a stoplight and it shuts off and you have to fire it back up when you have a very loud exahust.

Eventually. It's on the list, but the list is long. Don't really need a gauge setup for my stock SR.

Might as well take advantage of this local yokel named Broadfield (Tony Brad Feld). I'm not sure what gauge setup I will eventually do. Probably one of the few things still left up in the air. Do I want the new blitz gauges? do i want the new cusco gauges? do i want a full cluster with HUD or just a center vent setup?

Converted my s14 to non-abs today and 1 line is not made anymore from Nissan so besides 1 I had to make and custom bend it's not bad.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I think we see eye to eye on a lot of things :) I would love to have a DCC, and ganadors are definitely on the list.

The current plan for the ABS removal is to use the hardlines off of a shell I have for parts. It is a non-ABS car. I'm also taking the diff off of it, an S15 HLSD. Since it is a non-ABS car the diff housing will not have the ABS sensor on the snout. Since my car is ABS, and has the ABS sensor on the snout, I'll need a new longer driveshaft for the new housing. Anything else you can think of that I will need Mr. Fairlady?

So when I bought my car the rear hatch area was pretty trashed. The carpet on the back of the seats was nasty grey stuff, I only had one side of the inner quarter panel carpet, etc. Well a friend was getting rid of an S13 shell so I ended up snagging the missing pieces from that.

Here is pretty much what it looked like when I started. Just imagine one of the side panels being in.

http://images15.fotki.com/v246/photos/2/47612/9786173/photo4-vi.jpg

Here's a pic of one of the panels I got. They'd been sitting in his shop garage for a while so they were pretty dirty etc.

http://images57.fotki.com/v221/photos/2/47612/9786173/photo5-vi.jpg

Spent a while with the ol' vacuum on each panel and this is what one panel looked like after I cleaned it a while.

http://images15.fotki.com/v230/photos/2/47612/9786173/photo3-vi.jpg

Well the next thing I noticed was that the carpet panels were grey, but my new rear seat carpet section was a nice rich black. That bugged me, so I picked up some duplicolor fabric paint and wanted to dye the panels black to match the carpet.

http://images114.fotki.com/v75/photos/2/47612/9786173/photo2-vi.jpg

Here is what it looks like all back together. You can see I'm still missing the top trim piece of the hatch. I've since tracked that down, cleaned and painted it as well. I also put in my Cusco Type OS rear strut tower bar that I picked up from Damon a while back. I couldn't stand putting it in when the hatch area was so nasty though haha.

http://images116.fotki.com/v618/photos/2/47612/9786173/_MG_5013-vi.jpg

I also forgot to a get a picture of the front of the interior when I got the carpet and floormats in, so here's that. The horn button is missing bc I need to take the hub back off and straighten it out. Right now the steering wheel is pretty gangster leaned when the car is going straight, it bugs the shit out of me. I'm having Matt from Zilvia track me down a set of 180SX seat belts and interior plastics, so that will be awesome when I get those in there.

http://images58.fotki.com/v156/photos/2/47612/9786173/_MG_5010-vi.jpg

I finished a little early since my project was pretty small, but Toby on the other hand was obviously balls deep in his project, so I sat around and watched him a while. Here he is pounding the firewall out so that the heartbeat of America fits in there.

http://images116.fotki.com/v618/photos/2/47612/9786173/photo1-vi.jpg

Hopefully tonight I'll be moving the boost controller out of the footwell area where it always comes unstuck and falls on top of my feet. Also need to sack up and get the hub straightened out. Tried last night but I'm a little bitch and couldn't get the hub off. Oh well.

Picked up an S15 helical differential and non-HICAS subframe yesterday as well. The CUSCO 2-Way in the car is just more than I need. And I want to get rid of any remnants of HICAS on the car. I just need to pick up some PBM Subframe risers to firm things up and that can go on. I may end up getting a DSS Driveshaft depending on what kind of housing the S15 diff comes in. If it's an Open/Non-ABS Housing then it won't drop into my housing, which is VLSD/ABS. The ABS housings are a little longer so the driveshafts aren't compatible to the best of my knowledge.

Also picked up some DMAX Rear floor mats, Z32 MAF, Z32 Front Conversion Lines, and some other stuff.

Second update for today:

Small update today, just filling you folks in real quick.

The other I had planned to relocate the boost controller, re-center the hub, and remove the tweed from my doorcards. Well I've been having some nerve problems in my back lately (I'm 23...wtf) so my mobility is pretty limited, and laying across a sillplate rewiring my boost controller did not sound like my idea of fun. I ended up only just pulling the tweed of the doorcards, which only takes 10 minutes if you're wondering. Basically you take a hook pick and grab the edge of the tweed and get it start coming off, making sure not to go thru the vinyl (I used a 90* hookpick) then just peel away. You'll have to pull of the handles of the doorcards. Here is the end result. Way better than the stock tweed that feels like rubbing your arms on fiberglass insulation.

http://images58.fotki.com/v510/photos/2/47612/9786173/photo-vi.jpg

I need to clean my doorcards off. They have a summers worth of sweat and grime on them. Also might put some 3M Adhesive Remover on a rag and clean where the tweed used to be so it's nice and uniform. Eventually I will be covering these inserts with red Bride logo material. I will do this the way Toby and Damon did (Toby came up with it), where you cut out the vinyl on the insert of the doorcard, then use adhesive from a spray gun (think paint gun) instead of just spray adhesive that you'd get in a can to wrap carpet on a sub box or something.

I got my Z32 maf in the mail yesterday. Can't wait to get that wired in. I will probably get a new exhaust soon assuming the MAF fixes my idle hunt. I'm leaning towards a Buddy Club Spec 2 again. I know it fits well (ground clearance is probably number 1 concern) and I usually am not a fan of canister style exhausts. But I'm not about to put one on until my car has a smooth, consistent idle.

Time for today's update:

I did a tiny amount of work on the car. Had planned to do more but the ol' back wasn't having it.

So, Tuesday Nights at Toby's continued...I ended up mounting my GTSPEC C-pillar bar. It mounts to the rear seat belt upper mounting points. Well, like all hatches, at some point in my car's life the rear seat belts were removed, so I didn't have any of the hardware. Luckily, Toby came to the rescue and had some spare Gallery Fresh bolts lying around that were the perfect fit, so I mounted that up with those.

Excuse the iPhone pic/dirty interior. I'll probably get a better one soon.

http://images112.fotki.com/v110/photos/2/47612/9786173/photo-vi.jpg

The last thing I did for the night was to remove the roof spoiler. It just wasn't really "me" and made the back of the car look too chunky. I'll probably post this on zilvia for sale with a bunch of other stuff soon once I figure out which one it is. I'm really liking the look if it without it so far.

http://images59.fotki.com/v684/photos/2/47612/9786173/1-vi.jpg
I had planned to do something like this

http://zilvia.net/f/chat/293805-interior-thread-103.html#post4218563

with my Pivot RHU-M last night as it is currently just double-stuck to the bottom of my steering column shroud, so it always falls down and annoys me, but I didn't have the motivation to do it, what with my back acting up and being tired from school/work (last semester of undergrad...yessssss)

In other news, got some new stuff this week. Got the 180SX belts and interior panels on the way, some red bride logo fabric on the way to spice up the interior a little, got a new turbo inlet pipe for the Z32 MAF, and my Z32 rear calipers showed up.

On a final note

I bought a Z32 BMC the other day. I'll get to talking about that eventually. All of my "updates" so far have just been me copying and pasting the entries from my blog over the last few months. Starting to catch up to where I'm at right now with the car.

Thanks man! Yeah Ganadors need to happen soon. I have a line on a few sets. DMAX vented hood would be cool, but I think that's a little rowdy even for me.

Anyone want to sell me some Zeta 2's?

Got 2 sheets of red Bride Logo fabric in the other day. So I'll be wrapping the door card inserts, glovebox and arm rest in that before too long here. Can't wait to get rid of the last bit of tweed in the interior. I also got my JDM seatbelts / interior plastics in from Matt the other day. No headliner yet to get rid of the gaps, still working out shipping with a guy from Canada, hopefully it's not too insane.

Man I really need some good updated pictures of this thing. Oh I also ordered some Energy Suspension Urethane subframe bushings today too. Right now the rear subframe bushings are in bad shape, so I can't wait to get those in. I'll be putting them in at the same time I do my non-HICAS subframe/HICAS delete and S15 dif that I picked up from Toby. This winter I'll be refreshing all of my suspension components with a new full-car bushing set and probably cleaning some stuff up under the car, like probably a fresh coat of paint on the subframe and suspension arms.

If anyone wants my fairly low miles, good condition Cusco 2-Way diff, let me know.

Last night I had my first go at wrapping some stuff in Bride fabric. I started with the glovebox and good lord that thing showed me who was boss. I think I spent a total of 4 hours working on it. <a href="http://www.broadfield.wordpress.com">Toby</a> got quite a lot of enjoyment out of watching me struggle I think. Anyway, here are some progress pictures.

What I started off with

http://images107.fotki.com/v780/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5014-vi.jpg

After pulling the nasty stained stinky tweed off. When you do this, the tweed separates from the backing (yellow stuff) so to prevent any lumps I sanded down all of the high spots.

http://images108.fotki.com/v360/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5019-vi.jpg

Mocking up the fabric so that the bride logos are level with the bottom of the glovebox and not slanted like they were on my coupe

http://images116.fotki.com/v617/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5020-vi.jpg

Top part glued down, about to start stretching

http://images116.fotki.com/v617/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5021-vi.jpg

Toby made me this little "tongue" or trim piece as he called it to help finish off the area on under the handle. Also put a fresh coat of Landau Black on the handle itself

http://images114.fotki.com/v75/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5024-vi.jpg

Finished and reassembled

http://images15.fotki.com/v230/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5023-vi.jpg

Back in the car

http://images15.fotki.com/v235/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5030-vi.jpg

Another showing the arm rest, which I did second and was much easier.

http://images28.fotki.com/v141/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5027-vi.jpg

The red is definitely very grabby. I'm hoping when I get the door cards done they kind of tone the glovebox and arm rest down a little. Otherwise I'll have to get red Zeta 3's.

My thumbs are killing me from all that fabric stretching. And that stuff is made out of kevlar I swear, such a pain to cut.

Might have another super small update tonight of the "hey I bolted a part on" sort, we'll see.

I ordered some more stuff for the car, A'PEXi Z32 MAF intake, some random little interior clips that I was bummed I was missing like the ones on the sill plate, Circuit Sports exhaust hanger bushings and then a Z32 rear caliper rebuild kit.

Oh and I'm really regretting the gray dmax floormats now btw. Knew I should have gone red.

Anyone want to buy my 180 seats? And my (real) Bride Zeta 3 Sport?

Bench bleed bmc before installing real good. Theres a kit avail or borrow from technicians at work. Hahaha
That will make things easier. Bleed in car as well.Get speed bleeders for the calipers to make that a 1 man job. Did that on my 180 and will do on the s14 as well.

That's about it. You wont need to bend lines like I did so that's a plus.

They're not real easy to find. I was lucky enough to get ahold of BBoyOracle at the right time and he sold me this one.

Small update: Put on my A'PEXi Z32MAF Intake and Z32 MAF tonight. Pretty sure the MAF I bought off a dude on here is bad.

The car will start then lope real bad then shut off. If I unplug the MAF, it runs fine. When I used a multimeter and measured pin-to-pin on it, it had the same readings as when I did the same measurement on my bad Z32 MAF from my coupe when I fried all of the electronics in it last year.

Speaking of frying the coupe, when I did that, I also fried the PowerFC I had in the car, so it's been a nice desk ornament since then. Well recently a friend of mine did the same thing I did (hooked the battery up backwards) on his SR'd/PowerFC'd car and it fried his PowerFC as well. He called A'PEXi USA and apparently you can ship the PFC back to them and they will forward it on to A'PEXi Japan and they'll repair it for about 150 bucks with around a 2 month turn around time. So in other words, I'll be doing that as both this car and my coupe had Redtop SR's, then I'll be putting that PFC in this car once I get it back.

I redid the MAF wiring too when I was wiring in the new plug, it wasn't....how I would have done it. So at least that's a little better now.

I also sold my Bride Zeta 3 Sport today, so I'm going to get that shipped out for the dude and probably order a Red Zeta 3 or 2 soon. I'm extremely excited to finally have a Zeta 3 instead of a Zeta 3 Sport as that's what I've always had. Cool seat and all, but the Zeta 3 has the nicer fabric, finish, etc. I really want a Zeta 2 but I don't think it's going to happen this time around.

Ok if you made it through all of that, congrats. It is probably rambley. Here are a few pictures as a reward.

Thanks man! Gradation in general is pretty overpowering, do you mean Black Logo material? Mine is Red Logo. I generally like to be pretty subtle with things I do (like doing Black Logo instead) but since the car is bright red and has a huge wing, etc, I figure I would just go for it and hope it turned out well. I can always redo it if I don't like it. The black Zeta 3 Sport seat is now sold, being replaced by a red Zeta 3 ASAP. I think when I do the doorcards it will help distract from the glovebox and armrest. Right now with only those "highlighted" by the bride material, I would agree that it looks pretty dumb and overpowering, as those are odd items to highlight. I will be replacing the floormats before too long. The only thing that is more shoddy than the quality of the DMAX floormats is the wiring in this car. I'll probably end up with floormats that mimic the pattern of the DMAX set, but in red, and made by a local upholstery shop that does top quality work. They will be made to have an indentation to go around the cage that I want to do.

And yeah I've seen that article haha.

I ordered an RS*R full car bushing kit today. I couldn't stand the thought of putting anything back on the car that wasn't freshened up. So the rear knuckles/spindles/everything will have brand new polyurethane bushings. As well as the rear subframe bushings themselves. The differential may get SPL solid mounting bushings.

http://images15.fotki.com/v235/photos/2/47612/9786173/1-vi.jpg

Here is the subframe / rear end assembly that I am picking up from Bret tomorrow. This thing needs some serious work in the cleaning department. Assuming everything checks out (no structural rust, etc) I'm going to drop this off at PowderCoating Unlimited to be sand blasted and powdercoated gloss black along with the uprights/spindles and front and rear 300zx brake calipers. I will clean and paint the differential housing my self. Most of the arms (toe arms, traction arms, upper control arms) will hopefully be replaced with aftermarket SPL units this winter. The lower control arms may be replaced as well, but I'm not set on that just yet. The brakes/e brake cables you see in these pictures will be sold off or thrown away as I have the 300ZX E-Brake assembly and calipers to put on there. That will be a huge upgrade.

I am dropping my Zeta 3 Sport off at Greyhound today to be shipped off to a military base in the Mojave desert where it's new owner resides. I think I've decided against running a completely red Zeta 3 for my next seat. Hopefully I'll be ordering the new one within the next couple of days so that it will be here by the middle of October for Toby's cookout. I'm going to do something a little different with the Zeta that draws on my roots in the Honda world a little bit, it should turn out pretty cool and match the black/red theme of the interior pretty well hopefully.

Great thing about S13's is that the differential requires no bushings. It's directly mounted onto the subframe.

You should upgrade to solid subframe bushings while you have it off. They're not as horrible as people make them seem.

Urethane bushings...dunno. A lot of people have ran them and they become annoying after a while. Have to continually grease them so they don't bind up.

Personally decided against having my subframe powdercoated. If any of the coating chips, the bare part will allow the subframe to rust from the inside. Painting it instead.

kyles1988

I thought that if you had an S14/15 housing, they had to be secured somehow? And that the S13 Subframe had provisions to do so, but they weren't used when in conjunction with an S13 diff housing?

I've read up on the solid subframe bushing vs poly as much as I can. Most people say it's "not too bad", well that's the thing, the PBM coilovers on the car do ride poorly, so I'm afraid that adding one more thing that's "not too bad" to it will make it too bad. I'd like it to ride as nice as possible at it's current ride height. As it is, some days I can not drive the car with the condition my back is in.

As far as the urethane bushings on the spindles etc go, I've heard they bind up too, definitely a bummer. What other option do you have though? I guess the idea of re-greasing them every winter isn't horrible. I grew up racing motocross and we used to tear the forks / rear suspension down every winter and rebuild/regrease them. I guess I should also mention that the car is not my daily. So will the grease hold up longer since the car sits 5 days a week?

I figured that the powdercoating would hold up to more abuse than painting. it seems like when people spray bomb their subframes it looks cool, but down the line when they show the subframe again it looks trashed. So will a well-prepped and painted subframe outlast powder? What about sandblasting it then POR15'ing it?

Could always go with different coilovers. Personally looking at DG-5's and such. Already have a brand new set of FLT-A2's, but they're just sitting around collecting dust(with all my other shit, hah). That way, the solid subframe bushings aren't all that noticeable.

Don't know what your budget looks like, but you could look into going all spherical. SPL sells these: SPL PRO SUSPENSION | 89-94 Nissan 240SX S13 (http://www.splparts.com/chassis-S13.html#SPLRKBS13)

My buddy (owner of the infamous "Ruined Z" ) has all spherical bearings on his car and it's really comfortable. Solid, but not back breaking. It's a blast to drive.

Sounds kind of dumb, but I'm going with two different set ups (street and track). Street set up will consist of Nismo bushings on my LCA's and spindles. Everything else will be spherical (Cusco). Track set up will consist of all Spherical. Looking at SPL's newest line, I'm tempted to get rid of all my Cusco stuff and go SPL everything, but then again, Ikeya Formula is looking at me funny and I feel like throwing my money at that. Hah

I figured that as well with the subframe. My subframe has been sitting off to the side for months now because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. Powdercoating was the first thing that came to mind, but after reading how it could rust from the inside (powdercoating doesn't bubble up like paint does when it rusts), that threw me off. I mean, it's not like we get a serious amount of rain in Cali, but I plan on keeping my car long term. As long as the subframe is prepped and painted properly, I don't see why it wouldn't hold up just as well as powdercoating it. Personally not a fan of spraybombing stuff. I mean, I've worked with rattle cans (a lot), but wouldn't want that on my suspension pieces. It'll definitely chip. Don't have any experience with POR15 unfortunately. I've read about it though.

Your coils are the ride quality issue.

All sphericals and solid subframe bushings just make for more noise. Mine isn't bad since I have full interior still, but the sphericals in the rear spindles definitely increased road noise.

Can I ask where you're planning to buy your seat from? I checked a few places and they all were out of Red and I was told it would be about a 2 month wait till Tee's gets some in...

Ahh, ok. Thanks for the info on the sphericals man. The coils are for sure the issue, but they will do for now. My point was that I didn't want to increase the harshness of the car in any other way.

Well I'm actually not getting the red Zeta anymore. Bitching out. I'm still shopping around a little, but it's been Driveline Motoring (which apparently is no longer run by Eric, so I'm not sure who the new guy is) and AutoRnD. Basically depends on the price/availability balance. I imagine a black Zeta won't be bad to get.

Yeah it only is currently available on the Stradia II (I hope they run this colorway on other seats soon). I'd pony up the cash for one for sure. The carbon backed Type R's look amazing as well (Though I only seen it on Vios III and Zeta III L model). I was shocked to see that it's not THAT much more then Zeta III's. Polyurethane bushings for all bushings in the suspension. Subframe, all of the rear arms, steering rack, etc. I'm trying not to put anything back on the car that isn't freshened up or made better in some way.

I'm currently taking apart my 300ZX calipers to get powdercoated. I'm trying to freshen up every aspect of those: powdercoating, zinc plating all bolts, new seals and hardware, etc. Now I'm trying to decide if I want to get new pistons.

OK time for another update. I actually worked on the car a little this time instead of just taking pictures of everything piled up.

Ok so here is what my ground clearance looked like with the factory exhaust. Part of the reason I was doing the exhaust ws to gain ground clearance since I'm tearing up my garage floor when I pull out of it.

http://images51.fotki.com/v303/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5095-vi.jpg

And here is what the back of the car looks like with factory exhaust:

http://images15.fotki.com/v223/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5096-vi.jpg

I ended up picking up a set of circuit sports exhaust hanger bushings with hopes that it will bring the exhaust up a little higher. These are polyurethane so they're quite a bit stiffer than the old clapped out factory pieces.

http://images108.fotki.com/v191/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5097-vi.jpg

I don't have a whole lot of progress pictures so I'll just write a book about what went down.

After spending a little bit getting the car all jacked up and supported properly it was time to tear into it. I've recently developed a phobia of being under cars (doesn't bode well for my HICAS removal project this winter...) so I tried to make sure everything was supported properly. I put the rear wheels on the race ramps wheel cribs (these aren't my pictures, I googled them to show you guys what I did):

http://www.raceramps.com/images/products/detail/rrwheelcribs.jpg

The put the front wheels on the Race Ramps Roll ups and chocked them front and rear on both sides.

http://www.mamut.net/chassisteknikkshop/rr-ru.jpg

Now that the car was all ready to go, it was time to start pulling off the ol' trusty OEM exhaust. Surprisingly it was in decent shape. One of the mufflers was rusty on the side and had cracked but not too bad. It has to be one of the few factory exhausts left haha. I pulled that guy down and saws-all'ed it up so the garbage man would take it away in the morning. Next was working with the new exhaust. It's a 2 piece design that uses a slip joint in the middle with springs to hold it together. I coated the joint with heat resistant anti-seize so hopefully it isn't too hard to pull apart should I ever need to.

Next I put on the exhaust hanger bushings. I couldn't find my trusty can of silicone to spray in these to make installation easier, so I went ghetto and just used the next slickest thing I could think of: Tire Shine. It ended up working pretty well. So I got the exhaust all mounted up and good to go. Here are some pictures:

http://images51.fotki.com/v278/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5099-vi.jpg
http://images30.fotki.com/v42/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5101-vi.jpg

A little more ground clearance but I may end up either having my downpipe bent by an exhaust shop so that it tucks up higher by where the cat would be or just going with a PBM Cobra 2 downpipe.

And one picture of the car after I finished buttoning everything up:

http://images57.fotki.com/v80/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5106-vi.jpg

While I was under the car I found out why my speedometer wasn't working: the speed sensor was very loose int he transmission. So I tightened that guy up and continued looking around for other little things to fix. I noticed my frame rails had pretty much all of the undercoating ground off from sliding across crappy driveways and what not, so while I'm under there this winter with everything apart I'll be undercoating everything. Now I'm saving up for all SPL Pro V3 arms and maybe some NISMO lower control arms and a whiteline sway bar.

I've been meaning to place an order for some shorter exhaust hanger bushings. I want as much clearance as possible (Thanks for reminding me). I haven't really looked into what's out there but I should probably start.

And I feel you on working under cars...It still gives me the chills...

Oh and I don't remember if you mentioned what colour your seat is? Good to see that it arrived before the weekend. Here in Canada it's Thanksgiving weekend so my seat wont be here till Tuesday (not like it really matters)...

I'm not sure what other exhaust hanger bushings are out there, but I just went with these since they're easy to get ahold of. They're so stiff compared to the factory ones, they're like hockey pucks.

When I was about 8 years old my neighbor was killed in his driveway when his car fell on his neck and killed him because of improper support, so I'm pretty careful about that these days.

My seat is a hyper black zeta 3. I went and picked it up from Toby on lunch but I forgot to take pictures. It looks pretty sweet though!

I went with the bride Zeta 3 in hyper black with FRP shell. The new seat is FIA certified and is covered in much nicer material than the previous Zeta 3 sport. I also ordered a spare hyper red cushion set to try to tie in the red bride logo material on the glovebox and armrest. I got the idea for this from the Mugen S1R bucket seat. I'm looking forward to getting the seat in the car so I can see how it looks

Haha man..can't wait for this weeknd, going to be so dope.

In other news, tonight I'm wiring my SR20 MAF back in since I totally dropped the ball on reading up on using the Z32 MAF. You cannot use the Z32 MAF with factory engine management, so I can't use it until I get my PowerFC back form A'PEXi (assumign they're able to repair it).

Hopefully my SR MAF has enough life left in it to idle properly at least until this weekend for Toby's Nissan cookout. I don't want to drive around looking like a jackass with a loud ass car that sounds like it is running like a bag of dicks. Once the cookout is over though I plan to take the car apart for the winter to begin the ABS delete, HICAS delete, subframe restoration etc.

The current plan is to run all aftermarket rear arms instead of bothering with powdercoating the factory units. I think the car came with some chinese counterfeit rear upper control arms anyway so it will be nice to get those off of there. Pretty important part.

Thanks man! Rays is awesome. I'm heading back in January hopefully. The jump lines are super flowy.

Time for an update on this thing:

Well it's been a while since I've updated this, been busy being a scumbag and what not. In reality work and school have both been insane lately, so I've just had my head down trying to get by. I have been scooping up some cool parts though. Picked up a 6 pt cusco cage. I am planning to have a harness bar welded on to this so that one day I can run a harness without worrying about destroying my back should I feel the need to run one. Then I will have the powdercoated gloss black (it's currently "cusco blue"). I also picked up some Project Mu Club Racer rotors from Russell at Nissanparts.cc. They really are pretty cheap for PMu parts. Those should be here around the middle of November hopefully. The last thing I got recently was a Tomei short shifter. It was between that and a Nismo Solid Shifter but the coolness/rareness of the Tomei just won over.

Anyway, the only work I've done recently to the car is to start tearing down my spare subframe to have it powdercoated. It came with all the stock arms that have never been removed so I've been breaking those loose with a 1/2 inch breaker bar and a hammer over the last few days. Here are some pictures of the progress:

Here is where I started:

http://images44.fotki.com/v301/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5144-vi.jpg

This has got to be one of the few subframes left with intact bushings. I'll be burning these out and replacing with polyurethane

http://images108.fotki.com/v360/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5145-vi.jpg

Here is where I called it a night after I hurt my back after trying to remove the inner upper control arm bolts. Those eceentric washers are the spawn of satan.

http://images15.fotki.com/v223/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5147-vi.jpg
http://images59.fotki.com/v684/photos/2/47612/9786173/IMG_5146-vi.jpg

Traction arms off brakes off, and pretty much one of the 2 bolts on each arm has been broken loose. Doesn't look like much but it took a little while. These things took some elbow grease to get out. I need to track down a socket to remove the axles next. The CV boots are in good shape so I'll refinish the axle shafts probably and then use those.

One last little thing I did was to replace the clips on my door sill plates. Some were missing, some were nasty. It just bugged me, so I picked up some new ones from Nissan.

Before:

I remember buying my S13 after bootcamp, and driving 7 hours to Cincinnati...I bought the thing at 10 o'clock at night using a flashlight to check the thing over. I made it about 2 miles downt the road before a Sherrif pulled me over and said I had to have a tag on it from Ohio. A city cop pulls in, runs up to the window and says, "Sweet 240 man, is this thing boosted??" I drove 7 hours on I-75 north with a license plate off of a Red '93 Ford F150...facepalm... But yes we love 240's

Car looks great man, and the carpet looks killer, I love my black carpet too, the grey one I replaced looked like a science experiment! Good luck with the build.
