View Full Version : 6.5 Infinity Kappas, custom fitted in doors (how well can they fit?)

I did some searching and figured out most of what I wanted to know. However, I still have a few questions about mounting 6.5" speakers into the doors of my S13.
I'm coming up on an opportunity to get 75% all Infinity/JBL products. I figure at that price, I can't lose. I'm thinking I want to try out the 6.5" 3-way Infinity Kappas for the doors. The question is, how do they fit? It sounds like there are a few people around the forum that use these. Before I order them I just want to know that I can mount them w/o the magnet sticking out too much restricting my windows from rolling down and also that the foam of the speaker wont rub on the door pannel. I wont need to trim anything will I?
Also, I'm gonna leave the 4x6 size in the rear. What speakers would you guys suggest to mate up with the front speakers? Kappas only come in plates in the 4x6 size. Would I be better off using 4x6 JBL ovals in the rear to provide more bass since I wont be running subs?
Thanks in Advance,
Dave.
BTW... I would have asked in an audio forum, but not all those guys drive S13s, and my question needs S13 expertise.

Use 1/2" MDF to make the bracket. It will fit no problems. Don't use 3/4" because it will make your door panels not fit back on the doors right without some forcing. Just make a pattern using the existing brackets. BTW I personally like Infinity Kappas. I have the 6.5" components in my car. I know others on this board have the same also.

I also just purchased the Infinity KAPPA series 3-ways and I'm going to attempt an install in the doors. I'll let you know how it goes. :)
Should be pretty straightforward though, but you never know cus the magnet on those things are HUGE (I understand they're comparable in size to the 6.5" MOMO components)

thanks guys. What speakers do you have in the rear? I was thinking I might just put the Infinity 4x6 plates back there. Even though it's not exactly ideal. I don't have a rear deck, so I'm not gonna be installing 6x9s.

Go with the Kappa plates. Whatever you do just don't touch anything that's an actual 4x6 oval. They sound like crap no matter what brand.
I myself will be mounting some 5-1/4" components in the stock rear location (under plastic grill) along with 6-1/2" components up front.
Buying at cost rules, speaker markup is WAY too high.

Today I've been playing with the idea of mounting some 6x9 Kappas in the rear deck. I don't have the rear deck right now, but can easily get one for free. I hear that the 6x9s sound much better than the stock 4x6.
Seem like I might just take a chance with 6.5" in the front and 6x9 in the rear deck and see how it goes. I should probably amp them too right?

Oh yeah. I forgot to mention, when you do replace your speakers, if you have factory amps don't forget to disable them. If you don't, then no matter what you do they will sound like shit. There is a FAQ on how to do it in the archive section.

cool, thanks a lot! That's good info to know.
Do the 6.5s sound good through the 4x6 speaker vents? Or do those need to be modified?
misnomer

Yes, the factory amps will make any new speaker sound like ass :P
I'm another one who put 6.5" Kappas up front on a baffle board. Fairly easy (I was nowhere near as mechanically skilled when I installed them as I am now). I used 1/4" plywood, though1/2" MDF should do OK as well. 6x9 may be pushing it for depth, the 6.5"s I have, with some waterproof foam baffles, are pretty close.
Though the 4x6 plates will fit, they don't screw directly in. You have to trim a wee bit from the housing, and find a clever way to hold the plates down (none of the screw holes line up with the factory holes). I made it work in my hatch with some silicone sealant :P

do you guys know who can make those custom speaker plates for the doors, so that a 6.5 speaker will fit without a problem?

gaddamn, just make it out of MDF or plexiglass, there is absolutely NO need to purchase these plates.. they are SO easy to make.

ps: 6.5" fit like a charm as long as they arent too deep. 6x9 will NOT fit though, i tried (unless they are flat 6x9's).

1/4" Plexiglass/MDF/ABS Plastic will do fine. Do not use 1/2", it's too thick and it wont clear the doors.
You will have clearance issues depending on the design of the speaker. (both size of magnet & the tweeter design if you dont have components) But you should be fine if you use 1/4".
It's a pain in the ass to get the bracket done nicely, but if you use a dremel or a jigsaw and take your time with it, you'll be fine.
Fit 6 1/2" Infinity KAPPA 3-way speakers, as well as regular Infinity 2-ways using custom brackets without any issues. :D
Thanks to dvdevo and his mad dremel skills ;)

getting them custom make for you is easy but then are you willing to pay that price ? just like everyone said make your own bracket, you 'll love what you can achieve at the end. :) :boink:

Hi guys. well my setup right now is Infinity referance 6x9 2 ways in the rear (mounted in 6x9 boxes). I think my old JBL Decade 6x9s mounted on the rear deck bumped more (i liked more) but that got stolen. Any ideas as to what can make em bump more?? Possible difference in head unit?
As for the front, I got the Infinity Reference 5 1/4 reference series that Im going to mount in soon. Glad to hear that alot of you guys are using Infinity speakers as well.
Oh yah, I think im getting water into my doors, becuase once i saw my old speaker was wet and it was raining a few days. would that be the weather stripping on the door??
I just finished installing some 6 1/2s in the doors using 3/4in mdf. The wood was a little too thick, so I had to trim a little plastic off the door panel. But it is nice and solid, sounds so much better.
To prevent the speakers from getting wet in the doors, you should use a foam baffle (http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-cVxKOwet8UZ/ProdGroup.asp?c=11&g=762&s=0&cc=01&avf=N&search=) . Just make sure you cut out the bottom half of the foam or else the speaker won't put out much midbass. Most speakers are designed to be used in and infinite baffle (using the whole door as the enclosure).
